The cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) is the fastest land animal on Earth and can reach speeds
of up to 70 mph. They have long, muscular legs, special pads for gripping the ground,
and a long tail that is used for balance. Unlike most big cats, the claws of a cheetah are
always extended which gives them extra grip as they start to run.
Cheetahs have extremely sharp eyesight. They scan their surroundings for prey such
as gazelles and impalas but will also eat small mammals and birds. Once a cheetah has
killed its prey, it drags it to a safe place away from other scavengers including lions,
leopards and hyenas.
Cheetahs can be found in Africa and Asia. They like an open habitat such as grasslands,
savannahs and deserts. They also live in mountainous areas too.
A female cheetah will usually have a litter of three to five cubs and remain with them for
about two years. She teaches them important survival skills like knowing how to hunt
and avoiding other large predators.
There are approximately 12,000 cheetahs that remain in the wild in Africa.
