TORONTO, CANADA
Toronto is Canada’s largest city, the fourth largest in North America,
and home to a diverse population of about 2.8 million people.
It’s a global centre for business, finance, arts and culture and is
consistently ranked one of the world’s most livable cities.
The Greater Toronto Area’s (GTA) population of six million is
expected to reach 7.7 million by 2025. More than one-quarter of
Canadians live in the densely populated area of Southern Ontario
called Golden Horseshoe.
Its crime rates are among the lowest in Canada, comparable to
those of Calgary’s and Ottawa’s. It is home to many festivals,
art exhibitions, six opera companies, two symphony orchestras,
amusement parks and more than fifty dance ensembles. Toronto
has six major sport teams in Hockey, Basketball, Football, Soccer
and Lacrosse and regularly hosts major sport events and leagues.
Toronto is where the opportunities lie as according to Forbes,
Toronto is among top ten the “World’s Most Economically Powerful
Cities”; its unemployment rate is as low as 8.2 per cent. In 2012,
Toronto had the largest number of head offices in Canada with 726,
and 73,380 head office employees.
Toronto fosters diversity as close to half of Toronto’s population are
immigrants. The City prides to be home to wide range of cultures,
cuisines, languages, sports and arts.
Toronto’s average temperature is 26 degrees Celsius in summer
and -7 degrees Celsius in winter.

GEORGE BROWN COLLEGE
In 1951 the Ontario Government opened the Provincial
Institute of Trades with the goal of providing skilled training to
soldiers returning from World War 2. Seventeen years later, as
the province established a new college system; the Institute
was expanded to encompass a broader range of programs,
opening as George Brown College in 1967.
George Brown works closely with industry partners to ensure
our programs meet the needs of both students and employers.
The campuses are located in downtown Toronto, so you’ll have
access to top employers for field education and networking
opportunities.
The faculty help sharpen technical skills and also develop the
important people skills needed to succeed in the workplace.
Many of the faculty have industry experience and pass that
real-world knowledge on to their students.
George Brown takes prides in its modern learning facilities,
equipped with state-of-art technologies that simulate what
students will experience in the working world. In 2014/2015,
88 per cent of our qualifying programs offered field education.
Applied research is also a key priority and George Brown
provides opportunities for students to work alongside industry
partners.

Please note that you have to apply to the exchange programme in your current year by 20 December. Applications for the host university must
be submitted between Early March and Mid-April or Early September and Mid-October (depending on the Trimester), in the year following your
initial application.

Living Costs
As an Exchange Student, you are responsible for covering the costs of
course materials and books, residence, and other living expenses.
The Canadian government requires that all incoming students
purchase the University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP). UHIP will cover
your basic medical and emergency needs.
Food $250 to $350/month
Rent $600 - $1200/month
Textbooks $75- $150 per book
Cultural Field Trips $50 - $100
Mobile phone $10 (SIM card) & $20-30/monthly (pre-paid)

It is strongly recommended that you plan well ahead for
your trip and arrange for housing a month or more in advance of
arriving in Toronto.
If you do not have local friends or relatives to help you find a place,
consider staying with a Canadian family through a Homestay
Program. A homestay within Toronto can be arranged for a
minimum of 4 weeks with a Canadian family.
Other options include living in apartments, student co-operatives
or rented rooms.

Local transport is very accessible. Daily/weekly/monthly passes and
student discount are also available. Once you arrive in Toronto, the city
is easy to navigate with a strong grid street layout and one of the most
extensive public transit systems in North America.

The Student Association, in partnership with the TTC, sells
Metropasses to students and staff of George Brown College at a
reduced rate.
