The Great Schism
Directions: To demonstrate your understanding of the Great Schism, complete one of the following options.
Option 1: Front Page News
Write a newspaper article from the perspective of a journalist living in either Western Europe or the Byzantine Empire
when the Great Schism occurred.
Checklist:


_____ Issue and Subject Matter (15 pts.)
o Show a clear understanding of the different beliefs of the Western Church and Eastern Church.
 Minimum of 4 reasons - explained well or clearly represented.
o Show a clear understanding of when the split occurred (date) and what resulted from it (the two new
churches).
_____ Aesthetics/Mechanics (5 pts.)
o Three paragraphs in length, proper spelling and grammar, typed or written neatly, organized like a
news article.
Option 2: Comic Strip or Book
Create a comic strip or a comic book that explains The Great Schism and its results. It should be informational and
entertaining. Use a large piece of paper and draw boxes to create each scene or fold paper together to make a
booklet.

Option 3: Movie Poster
Create a poster for an upcoming movie about the Great Schism - why it occurred, when and what resulted. This poster
could include a title (for movie), starring characters (who was involved), key plot elements and details, a catchy tagline,
etc.
