Fairford & District Newsletter Issue 239 May 2017 ‘The Queenes Pickture’ Portraits of Elizabeth 1 Dr Gillian White www.fairfordu3a.org.uk Registered Charity No 1072658 Read the Newsletter online at www.fairfordu3a.org.uk Main Meeting Tuesday 2 May 2017 April Meeting With excellent maps, diagrams and illustrations, Liz Payne gave an interesting talk about the birth and successes of the Cotswold Canals Trust in reestablishing the canals that at one time linked the River Severn and the Thames. A 1954 Act caused them to be finally abandoned and in less than 20 years decay and obstructions along the former waterways became extensive. Thanks particularly to Michael Aylward, the Trust was formed in 1972. He said in a 1974 interview that for him the desire to take a boat along the 36 miles from Saul to Stroud, then up the hill and through the big old tunnel at Coates, eventually arriving at Inglesham, was as exciting as it must have been for the original promoters in 1780. 2.30pm in Palmer Hall ‘The Queenes Pickture’ Dr Gillian White Forthcoming Meetings 6 June: The Queen’s Bodyguard of the Yeomen of the Guard by Shaun McCormack Shaun served for 24 years in the Infantry and in 2000 was sworn into the Yeomen of the Guard. He tells us of the recruitment and strength of the Guard, State Dress of the Guard and of their state duties. Liz outlined the many phases of restoration that depended upon funding from Councils, other sympathetic bodies, individuals and companies, and have involved hundreds of volunteers. Some have come great distances, all working with the sole aim of reinstating the canals. Skilled planners, draughtsmen, architects, fundraisers, negotiators and managers have operated behind the scenes whereas others have enjoyed all the benefits of outdoor toil, mastered skills from felling trees to bricklaying, acquired hobbies, and formed friendships. Together they have solved seemingly insurmountable problems. One, dubbed ‘the missing mile’, may be solved this year when a company called Ecotricity joins Stroud District Council to build a park, stadium and nature reserve. This process should overcome the obstacle of getting the route under the M5 cleared and enable water to flow through Westfield lock again. 4 July: Simon de Montfort and the Battle of Evesham by Mrs Jill Phipps Jill Phipps tells us of Simon de Montfort and the Battle of Evesham 1 August: Outdoor Meeting at Bowmoor Lake Members Should you change your email address or any other detail will you please let me know so that our records can be kept up to date. Sue Jonson Membership Secretary [email protected] 0774 392 3089 One can add to the achievements the resultant increase in tourism in the Stroud area and the improvements to the environment. As an example of the latter, while walking from Saul Junction eastwards along the tow-path on 29 March, a group of birdwatchers saw 42 species. Tea Rota 6 June: 4 July: 1 August: Needlework Pétanque Outdoor Meeting Sylvia Jones Photo Album If you have any interesting photographs of U3A activities please pass them to Ann Wightman for inclusion in the album. 01285 712723 2 Chairman’s Report Thank you to all who attended the AGM in the Palmer Hall last month and so positively supported the Committee. The new Constitution was also unanimously adopted. We have now received the grant from the Town Council for £500. This has been put towards the purchase of dedicated laptops for the Treasurer and the Membership Secretary. Our thanks to the Town Council for this. The New Members’ meeting is set for 5 June in the Farmor Room of Fairford Community Centre from 11.30am to 1.00pm. If you have recently joined or know of someone who is considering joining or would like to know a little more about what we do, we would welcome you all. The Cotswold Link is holding a Special Interest Day entitled 'If Music Be The Food Of Love' on Thursday 6 July in Cropthorne near Pershore. If you are interested in this please contact me. We will be manning a table at the Lechlade Extravaganza on May 21 in the afternoon to promote the ethos and activities of our U3A. The cost of £10 will go towards the Memorial Hall rebuild as will that of many other stalls and activities that are running from 19 to 21 May next to the Memorial Hall. Please feel free to contact me with any queries or comments as below: Jan Mills, Chairman 01285 850384 [email protected] Memory Course The Memory course ran on four Thursdays in March with 11 starters and 10 finishers! The leaders were Sue Rushton and Morag Hill ably assisted by Marilyn Gibbon. Most attendees found it not only useful and interesting but also reassuring too. Some thought it would have been better to be six weeks long but I think the leaders may have run out of steam by then! It was a very interactive course with plenty of participation from the attendees. Currently there are no further dates to run the course but if there is enough interest then more could be planned. Thanks to all who helped to make it a successful course; leaders and attendees alike. Morag Hill Message from our Group Co-Ordinator The Committee requests that all group leaders keep an attendance record at their meetings. Where another member (for example, on the the Walks) leads the group could the acting leader please email the list of attendees to the group leader for their records. I would also like to remind group leaders to ensure they submit any entry or change of entry for the Newsletter before the 17th of the month. This will save the editor from phoning round for missing updates/ entries. This month we shall meet in the Fairford car park at 7pm for a visit to the Cotswold Water Park hoping to hear some nightingales and, if we are lucky, to see one; although this can be tricky. Sylvia Jones 01285 712657 9 Walking Groups Striders Strollers Tuesday 23 May Friday 26 May The walk is about 6 miles and begins at The White Horse, Woolstone (SN7 7QL). Field paths take us to Uffington village which we traverse on minor roads and paths. We then pick up a route which takes us to the foot of White Horse Hill. This route crosses a series of stiles; none of them too difficult for a seasoned Strider! The path to the summit has one steep section which will be taken steadily! Views from the summit should be magnificent given good visibility. Descending, we return to the White Horse (pub) for a well-earned meal. An experiment this month, which I hope our walkers will like. An afternoon walk finishing with tea. The walk is a shortened version of a previous Pub Lunch walk of around 3.5 miles from the delightful village of Asthall. We take the lane going north from the village and shortly turn right to follow the river Windrush and walk a rather mis-shapen circular route, a combination of field paths and a country lane. There are one or two climbs but nothing serious and one stile only at the start. We finish with a stroll through Asthall village and a chance to visit the beautiful Church, after which we take the short six minute drive in the homeward direction to the Burford Car Park and a short walk to The Priory for tea. Leave Fairford car-park at 9.19am or meet at the pub at 9.58am to order lunch and use the loos before setting out on the walk. Suggested travel donation £2. Meet at the Fairford Car Park for 1.30pm departure or meet in Asthall on the edge of the village, approached from the Windmill Carvery junction where offroad parking is available. I will be at the spot accompanied by a U3A flag. Please ring or e-mail by the previous Sunday as the pub gets quite busy and would appreciate knowing numbers by then. Phil and Margaret Trickett: 01285 712421 or email: [email protected] I look forward to seeing you. Suggested Passenger charge £1.50. Michael Yorke; 01367 253286 Straddlers Walk with a Pub Lunch Thursday 18 May Wednesday 10 May This is a walk round Fairford taking in the river, a couple of lakes and perhaps a new housing estate. The distance of 6 miles makes it more of a Striders, however it can be lengthened if the weather is clement. Another reason the walk is 'off Straddlers' is that I have made the finish at Colosseo where I have booked a little buffet repast (no cost to the walkers) as compensation for those walkers who like a tough 10 miler and a casual sandwich along the way. Our walk this month includes sections on both sides of the meandering stream in the Coln Valley. Starting from The Inn At Fossebridge we will order our lunches beforehand. It is not a very long walk - about 3 to 4 miles with a few easy stiles and no steep inclines. We will meet at the car park in Fairford at 9.45am or at the Inn at 10.15am (Post Code GL54 3JS). Meet at Fairford car park 10am. It is important to let me know, as soon as possible if you wish to join this walk and particularly the buffet as I have to give Colosseo catering numbers. Suggested contribution to travel £1.50. Ian Westlake Bert Sampson 01285 712789 [email protected] 01285712329; [email protected] 10 GROUP REVIEWS Anglo-Saxon Poetry At our March meeting we read and discussed the short poem ‘Wulf and Eadwacer’. Set in the Fenlands, it is one of only two poems in Anglo-Saxon where the speaker is a woman. The poem is open to a number of interpretations as to who Wulf and Eadwacer are in relationship to the speaker (lover? husband?). Whatever the interpretation, the poem is an powerful expression of loss, separation and isolation. To conclude the meeting, we listened to another track of Beowulf from Seamus Heaney’s verse translation. Iris Anne Lewis Book Circle 1 Our choice for March, ‘My Brilliant Friend’, is the first book of a quartet by the Italian author Elena Ferrante. Through the lives of two fifteen-year-old girls, living in the poor outskirts of Naples in the 1950s, we see the life of a neighbourhood, a city and a country. Their friendship is shared through books, with Lila devouring every text she can lay her hands on, Elena stunned with wonder and driven on by Lila’s trust and ambition for life, striving to match but constantly and acceptingly feeling second best to her friend. The two central characters are fascinating portraits of admirably strong ambitious women facing a male-dominated world. Eileen Harlow Book Circle 2 In April, we met to discuss the work of William Trevor who died last year. He was born in Ireland but spent most of his adult life in England. He was particularly well known for his short stories but was also a prize-winning novelist and Nobel Laureate. Despite all this, most of us had never read his work before! But we are glad to have made up for lost time and enjoyed sharing our views of what we had read. With such a wide range of books to choose from, it was not surprising that only one novel had been chosen by two members. ‘Old Boys’ was much enjoyed and the quality of writing greatly admired. Since I had suggested that we read William Trevor, I read both a novel, 'The Story of Lucy Gault' and short stories taken from different collections. I particularly enjoyed the short stories and was full of admiration for the way Trevor quickly sets a scene, depicts his characters and draws his reader into the story he is telling. This fine writer is highly recommended by the members of Book Circle 2! Rosemary Westlake 11 Birdwatching How lucky we were to find a dry spring day sandwiched between two wet and windy ones for our long trip to Blashford Lakes. This reserve has a mixture of woodland and lakes to attract the birds so we always get a nice long list of species and this visit was no exception. One highlight was a superb view of a kingfisher perching on the reeds just in front of us and another was a brief close-up view of a snipe. Although most of the winter visitors had left we were lucky enough to find a few goosanders and goldeneyes on the water and some siskins, a few bramblings and a redpoll in the woods. We had hoped to find more early spring arrivals but were limited to some very vociferous chiff-chaffs. Richard Morgan Cycling with a Pub Lunch - Thursday, 30 March Yes, the sun did shine and apart from two gentle inclines yes, it was on the flat or downhill. Yes, the bubble and squeak and crispy bacon at The Hare and Hounds was as good as we remembered it. Although it is always tricky getting on the bike after a nice lunch and a pint of Doombar, we managed it! Seven of us left Quenington and headed along Akeman Street to the Cirencester/Bibury road , across the Stow road then on to Calmsden. Delightful ride with good roads, until we cruised through Barnsley and up to Ready Token. Not so good there. Then we went our separate ways. Longest ride was back to Lechlade. Grand ride with excellent company. Paul O'Shaughnessy Pétanque Our 2017 season began with sun for both groups so we are hoping that this may continue for many weeks. We welcomed a few 'trial' members to our Tuesday morning session so the numbers are creeping up. Dave and Heather would like to thank Reg Thoburn for stepping in and running the Wednesday group in our absence. This was very much appreciated. We would also like to thank so many members for their good wishes. Dave and Heather (remind us of anyone?!) 12 Postcards Review Last year saw the 100th anniversary of the shooting down of a German airship near Cuffley in Hertfordshire during an aerial bombardment intended for London. Although the Germans instigated many such attacks, it was the first time one of their machines had been shot down. The event caused enormous public interest and ten trains a day left London carrying people wanting to see the crashed airship. It was undoubtedly a field day for the newspaper industry. The airship was shot down by the pilot of a small bi-plane, Lt William Leefe-Robinson, who subsequently received the VC for his brave endeavours. Sadly, shortly after the end of the War, Leefe-Robinson died at the age of 23 from the effects of an influenza pandemic attacking the world at that time. Immediately following the crash, picture postcard producers worked assiduously to produce their postcards, which were available for purchase within three or four days. Illustrated with cards from his own large collection, John related the story of the Cuffley airship at our March meeting. The event was of particular interest to Val and John since they lived in Cuffley for many years before moving to live in Fairford. Although we were all delighted with John’s story, as ever we had our own contribution to make to the success of the afternoon and there followed some short stories based on our own cards, ranging from stained glass windows in Dorset, some unusual flora and fauna, facts about Windsor Castle remembered from childhood, alongside reminiscences of family seaside holidays, schooldays, and birthday cards from past years. Barbara Cobbett Solos - 17 March The Solos yet again supported Kempsford Village Hall lunch time café, very good value and lovely food! We continued our ‘Eating Meetings’ on 19 March by visiting The Spotted Cow for an evening meal; yet again an enjoyable evening and get-together. Several of us supported the concert at Fairford Church in aid of Fairford Primary School and St Mary’s Church on 1 April; it made for a very pleasant evening. Mike Johnson Now is the Month of Maying Now is the month of Maying, when merry lads are playing! Fa la la la la! Each with his bonny lass, a-dancing on the grass, fa la la la la! The Spring, clad all in gladness, doth laugh at Winter's sadness! Fa la la la la! And to the bagpipes’ sound, the nymphs tread out the ground! Fa la la la la! Fie!
