September 2015 - Fort Payne First United Methodist Church

First United Methodist Church Fort Payne, Alabama September 2015 Vol. 10, Issue 9
Hello Church Family,
The multitude of ministries that take place at Fort Payne First UMC impacts a multitude of lives. Many of the ministries that take place are not seen by all the eyes of
our church. I was reminded of this yesterday as the Care Group provided a meal to
the Sawyer family after we celebrated the life of Sonny Sawyer. Many people in our
church have committed to providing a meat, a vegetable, or a dessert to be included
in a fellowship meal we provide for members of our church when a family member
passes away. Some of these same people set up Cobble Hall for a nice meal, served
the family, and cleaned Cobble Hall and Cobble Hall kitchen afterwards. Did you
know that? Now, you do. If you would like to participate in this very meaningful ministry, or have any questions, please contact Brenda Bailey (256-996-0663) or Bro.
Ricky (256-845-1141).
Each Sunday evening at 6:00 p.m. a group of prayer warriors meet in the bell choir room #204 to quickly
discuss the needs of our church, our nation, and our world. After mentioning specific prayer requests for
the evening, the prayer group spends time in silent and vocal prayer. At the end of their time together,
one specific need gets focused prayer from the whole group. Did you know that? Now, you do. If you
would like to participate in this very meaningful ministry, or have any questions, please contact Martha
Herston (256-630-2986) or Bro. Ricky (256-845-1141). Or, just show up Sunday evening at 6:00 p.m.
We would love to have you.
Did you know that in the fall, winter, and spring, our youth ministry hosts a community worship service at
the DeKalb Theater on Wednesday nights at 6:30? Each Wednesday evening a praise team made of
some of our youth and other youth from the community provide contemporary worship music. A speaker
provides a relevant message suited for the spiritual needs of the youth of today. There may be from 75 to
100+ at this service. I encourage you to stop by one Wednesday evening this fall and sit in the balcony
like I do. You will be blessed as you see and join our youth in worship of our Lord.
Through the months of September and October we will continue to highlight the various ministries of our
church each Sunday. We will do this in ways that help each of us become better aware of ways we might
serve in these ministries and/or give financially so that these ministries can continue to thrive. Then, in
November we will celebrate Stewardship Sunday and present our financial pledges for the ministry year of
2016. I would encourage you to begin to pray about your financial support of Fort Payne First and how
you might serve as well.

Pastor Letter (continued)
This year our theme for our Stewardship Campaign is “Extravagant Giving”. I hope that as you consider
the various ministries of our church and the impact they are having on the community and world, you will
also consider how you might financially support these same ministries in an extravagant way. God is extravagant in God’s love for us, mercy given to us, and in all other good things. May we bear the image of
God’s extravagance as we give generously to the ministry of the Lord as conducted here at Fort Payne
First United Methodist Church.
Loving being your pastor,
Ricky
Pacesetters
The Pacesetters’ activity for August included a tour and lunch at the historic Milky
Way Farm in Pulaski, TN. The estate found its beginning in a nickel candy bar. Frank
C. Mars, founder of The Mar-O-Bar Company, fell in love with Southern Middle Tennessee and bought the land that would become Milky Way Farm in the fall of 1930.
He continued purchasing surrounding countryside until the Milky Way reached
2,805 acres. The Manor House is listed on the historic registry. The 25,000 sq. foot
Tudor Mansion features massive chestnut beams and stone from the farm’s own
quarry. Twenty bedrooms, fourteen bathrooms, and four fireplaces are within the
estate house. Frank Mars had local craftsmen build a 40 seat table within the dining
room that measures 28′ X 12’.
This trip was planned in conjunction with the Golden Circle group from
First Baptist Church. In all, 24 people attended the trip, and were all in
agreement that lunch was probably the best part of the day. The group
enjoyed a catered lunch around the large 40 seat table that included
baked chicken, scalloped potatoes, corn, green beans, fresh spring salad
with blackberries & strawberries, and pecan pie with ice cream. And of
course, everyone received a Milky Way candy bar!
Our trip planned for September is to eat lunch in Trussville at the
“Chocolate Biscuit” followed up with a shopping excursion at the Pinnacle. The date of the trip is Tuesday, September 22nd beginning at 9:30
and returning home at 4:30. The deadline to sign up is Thursday, Sept
17th. The sign up sheet is at the CLC desk.
Dear Church Family,
We want to thank you for all the love and
support you have given us over this past

More importantly you have helped us to
see a whole new way to live life, a life totally spirit filled and spirit led. Your love
has made all the difference. We are honored to call you friends.

Children’s Ministries FALL 2015
In this series we will have so much fun learning how to Wise Up and make the choices
God wants us to make as we wiggle through God’s Word. "Wise people can listen
and learn.” Proverbs 1:5
One of the biggest innovations was the app, a piece of software that can run games,
work programs, and other programs right on your phone. Steve Jobs envisioned a
phone that would have an app for every purpose. In fact, as his software and hardware developers worked on the device, he coined a phrase that became a commercial
slogan - "There’s an app for that."
If you want to play music, there’s an app for that. If you want to play games, there’s
an app for that. If you want to learn about dinosaurs, there’s an app for that.
That’s the inspiration for our new series, "There’s a verse for that!" For every moment, every challenge, every choice we make in life, we’re going to
see that God has a verse for that in the Bible.

James: Following God’s Road Signs is written to encourage
and deepen the faith of upper elementary and middle school
girls and boys.
For Girls
Let’s face it, life is not easy. We need a road map
that will guide us in the right direction. God
wants us to focus on Him ~ especially when circumstances take unexpected U-turns. James will
teach kids how to: be joyful when they go through hard times,
really listen to others, put their faith into action, treat others
with kindness, and be wise. They’ll learn about drawing near
to God with humility, mercy, and grace. Students will discover
that prayer can be very powerful when we surrender our will
and follow His.
