Large Award Granted to TS Bank Institute Member FDIC Treynor Student Wins Money Smart Week Poster Contest Ashlyn Vorthmann of Treynor Elementary received a surprise on May 8. She was selected as one of the winners of the Community Bankers of Iowa’s (CBI) Money Smart Week Poster Contest. As the 3rd place finalist, Ashlyn received a $200 college savings CD. Ashlyn’s poster was submitted for judging by TS Bank in Treynor. CBI Membership Services Director Jackie Haley and TS Bank Institute Director Bob Mantell presented the award to Ashlyn at her school. As part of the National Money Smart Week events (April 5-12, 2014), elementary students in 2nd through 6th grades submitted poster designs to community banks across Iowa. Posters answered the question: “There’s a lot to learn about money. What should you know now?” All poster submissions were evaluated based on the overall message, creativity and workmanship. Ashlyn Vorthmann and the 1st and 2nd place finalists won over 2,000 other poster entries received from schools all over Iowa. CBI has been hosting the Money Smart Week Poster Contest since 1999. This is the first year that 2nd and 3rd place prizes have been offered. Ashlyn’s winning poster design (shown above) was also featured in the May issue of CBI’s monthly newsletter and their weekly CommonCents e-newsletter. The TS Bank Institute was awarded a $62,730 grant in April 2014 from the Iowa Division of Banking. The TS Bank Institute will use the funds to work with Iowa banks to replicate elements of the financial literacy program developed for Southwest Iowa and extend it throughout the state of Iowa in K-12 school districts and colleges. Iowa Superintendent of Banking, Jim Schipper, praised TS Bank Institute’s program, noting: “TS Bank Institute has been a leader in working with local schools to help them meet the financial literacy education requirements of the Iowa Core Curriculum. We are excited the TS Bank Institute will be able to help banks located throughout the state replicate the program in their market areas.” This significant award supports the TS Bank Institute vision, which is to extend the program to state and regional levels. To date, the foundation has impacted approximately 5,000 students in Southwest Iowa through curriculum development, in-school banking programs, regional teacher workshops, and other financial literacy related events. TS Bank is committed to helping communities prosper, and teaching financial literacy to both youth and adults is a great place to start. In 2009, TS Bank launched the TS Bank Institute, a non-profit organization, with a gift of $250,000 in the Treynor Community School District to create and implement a comprehensive K-12 financial literacy programs. In the fall of 2012, TS Bank committed one million dollars to the TS Bank Institute to expand the program of improving financial literacy in Southwest Iowa schools and non-profit organizations. “The TS Bank Institute is pleased to serve as a representative for the IDOB in carrying out financial education across the state of Iowa. It is our mission to create a stronger, more financiallysavvy future generation. We look forward to assisting other banks in promoting and enhancing K-12 and college financial literacy programming in their local school districts and providing teacher education opportunities through regional workshops,” stated Bob Mantell, TS Bank Institute Director. ”The ultimate goal for the TS Bank Institute is to have a previous student want to give back to the community as a result of the difference the TS Bank Institute made in his or her life. The cycle of increased prosperity in the community begins with a desire to give back.” Some recent highlights of the TS Bank Institute’s impact in the community: TS Bank Institute partners with the Boys and Girls Club of Council Bluffs. The TS Bank Institute works with the Boys and Girls Club on Monday afternoons teaching weekly financial literacy and money management programs impacting 120 students in grades 1-12. “The time our members have spent learning usable life skills with TS Bank has benefited them greatly.
