Treynor Student Wins Money
Smart Week Poster Contest
Ashlyn Vorthmann of Treynor Elementary received a surprise
on May 8. She was selected as one of the winners of the
Community Bankers of Iowa’s (CBI) Money Smart Week
Poster Contest. As the 3rd place finalist, Ashlyn received
a $200 college savings CD. Ashlyn’s poster was submitted
for judging by TS Bank in Treynor. CBI Membership Services
Director Jackie Haley and TS Bank Institute Director Bob
Mantell presented the award to Ashlyn at her school.
As part of the National Money Smart Week events (April
5-12, 2014), elementary students in 2nd through 6th grades
submitted poster designs to community banks across Iowa.
Posters answered the question: “There’s a lot to learn
about money. What should you know now?” All poster submissions were evaluated based on the overall message, creativity and
workmanship. Ashlyn Vorthmann and the 1st and 2nd place finalists won over 2,000 other poster entries received from schools all
over Iowa. CBI has been hosting the Money Smart Week Poster Contest since 1999. This is the first year that 2nd and 3rd place prizes
have been offered.
Ashlyn’s winning poster design (shown above) was also featured in the May issue of CBI’s monthly newsletter and their weekly
CommonCents e-newsletter.
The TS Bank Institute was awarded a $62,730 grant in April
2014 from the Iowa Division of Banking. The TS Bank Institute
will use the funds to work with Iowa banks to replicate
elements of the financial literacy program developed for
Southwest Iowa and extend it throughout the state of Iowa in
K-12 school districts and colleges.
Iowa Superintendent of Banking, Jim Schipper, praised TS
Bank Institute’s program, noting: “TS Bank Institute has been
a leader in working with local schools to help them meet the
financial literacy education requirements of the Iowa Core
Curriculum. We are excited the TS Bank Institute will be able to
help banks located throughout the state replicate the program
in their market areas.”
This significant award supports the TS Bank Institute vision,
which is to extend the program to state and regional levels.
To date, the foundation has impacted approximately 5,000
students in Southwest Iowa through curriculum development,
in-school banking programs, regional teacher workshops, and
other financial literacy related events.
TS Bank is committed to helping communities prosper, and
teaching financial literacy to both youth and adults is a great
place to start. In 2009, TS Bank launched the TS Bank Institute,
a non-profit organization, with a gift of $250,000 in the
Treynor Community School District to create and implement a
comprehensive K-12 financial literacy programs.
In the fall of 2012, TS Bank committed one million dollars to
the TS Bank Institute to expand the program of improving
financial literacy in Southwest Iowa schools and non-profit
organizations.
“The TS Bank Institute is pleased to serve as a representative
for the IDOB in carrying out financial education across the state
of Iowa. It is our mission to create a stronger, more financiallysavvy future generation. We look forward to assisting other
banks in promoting and enhancing K-12 and college financial
literacy programming in their local school districts and providing
teacher education opportunities through regional workshops,”
stated Bob Mantell, TS Bank Institute Director.
”The ultimate goal for the TS Bank Institute is to have a previous
student want to give back to the community as a result of the
difference the TS Bank Institute made in his or her life. The cycle
of increased prosperity in the community begins with a desire
to give back.”
Some recent highlights of the TS Bank Institute’s impact in the
community:
TS Bank Institute partners with the Boys and Girls Club of
Council Bluffs.
The TS Bank Institute works with the Boys and Girls Club on
Monday afternoons teaching weekly financial literacy and
money management programs impacting 120 students in
grades 1-12.
“The time our members have spent learning usable life skills
with TS Bank has benefited them greatly. They are gaining tools
that will enable them to become financially savvy consumers
and responsible members of their community. We are eager
to continue this amazing partnership and to see our members
grow from this great opportunity,” said Chris Peterson, Boys &
Girls Club Unit Director.

TS Bank Institute Partners with MICAH House in Council Bluffs
The TS Bank Institute visits the MICAH House in Council Bluffs monthly
to teach a money management class for adults who are experiencing
homelessness.
“Each year, MICAH House serves over 650 individuals who are
experiencing the crisis of homelessness. MICAH House works to ensure
those staying at the shelter receive basic needs and an opportunity to
break the cycle of homelessness. Our partnership with TS Bank Institute
offers individuals an opportunity to learn budgeting skills that may break
down the barriers to independence and help increase stability upon
leaving the shelter. We are so thankful for their consistent support.”

American Family Insurance offers Teen Safe Driver ProgramSM
to help young drivers conquer challenges of the road
The Teen Safe Driver ProgramSM, an innovative program that uses a
combination of technology and parental involvement to help young
drivers overcome the challenges of learning how to drive, is now
available to American Family’s automobile insurance customers.
American Family, in association with DriveCam Inc., is providing the yearlong Teen Safe Driver at no cost to American Family automobile insurance
customers who have a beginning teen driver in their household. The
program is now available in all 19 of American Family’s operating states.
Teen Safe Driver provides teens and their parents an in-vehicle video
and audio unit that captures risky driving behaviors. Parents log in to a
Web site, www.teensafedriver.com to view the driving report card, video
events and coaching tips, including objective, third-party assessment of
the teen driver’s driving performance compared with other teens.
“This is a terrific opportunity for parents to help their young drivers
identify the issues that all new drivers share,” said Travis. “Teen Safe
Driver is a completely voluntary program, and families who are already
participating in the pilot program find it reduces the number of risky
driving incidents.”
By helping parents provide guidance to their teens, Teen Safe Driver
is achieving greater than 70 percent reduction in the frequency and
severity of risky driving events among these novice drivers.
Contact Travis Castle or any member of his team to get more information
on how you can provide this innovative tool to help keep your teen safe
on the road.
