Showing the Flow of Energy
Using Food Chains Food Chains
•  Food Chain: is a model that show how energy stored in food passes from organism to organism •  All food chains are slightly different, but they will always start with a producer and end with some level of consumer Food Chain Levels
• Start •  First Level •  Producer: They produce and use energy for themselves. They make life possible for all other organisms on Earth i.e. grass, trees, flowers, algae, dandelions, all plants Primary Consumers
•  Second Level •  Primary: earliest in Bme or order of development •  Primary Consumer: This is the first organism to consume a Producer •  Organisms that consume only producers are known as Herbivores (vegetarians) •  Some organisms are will eat both producers and other consumers these we refer to as omnivores Secondary Consumers
•  Third Level •  Secondary Consumer: is an organism that consumes (eats) other organisms that ate the producer (plant) •  i.e. toads, snakes, spiders, shrews, birds, etc.. •  Can include bigger animals as well, any carnivore, or herbivore could potenBally be a secondary consumer rd
Ter=ary (3 ) Consumers
•  Ter9ary (3rd) Consumer: These are organisms that are consuming secondary consumers •  They will tend to consist of larger animals Build your own food chains
•  Using the following examples build four food chains of different lengths •  Make Sure you label each level of your food chain •  What is the longest food chain you can build? Snake Grass Rabbit Squirrel Sun Flower Spider Bird Hawk LeEuce Fox Coyote Tree Shrew Fish The Role that Owls play in their Ecosystem
•  Remember that Niche refers to place or role in an Ecosystem •  Based off of what you found in your Owl Pellet, what level of consumer was your owl in the food chain? •  Bird, Shrew,
Rodent,
Mole Birds
•  Typical food for smaller birds •  Insects •  Seeds •  Necter •  Worms Rodents
•  Seeds •  Plants •  Small insects •  meat Shrew’s
