Impressive Renegades open with 6-1 record
By Mike Weltman
Renegades Intern
The 2013 Hudson Valley Renegades have
started the season in record-setting style, by winning their first six games and going 6-1 in the
opening week. Those marks are tops for the
Renegades, who moved to Hudson Valley in
1994.
The Hudson Valley Renegades' stadium staff
may have been cleaning up the Dutch for the
'Gades home opener, but it was the players that
were bringing out the brooms for back-to-back
sweeps.
The Renegades' lone loss of the week was a 43 decision in 13 innings to Brooklyn on Sunday
night.
Hudson Valley made easy work of the
Aberdeen in the opening series. The Gades won
their first three games 5-0, 10-5 and 6-2 before
defeating the Staten Island Yankees 6-0. All of
these victories came while on the road. It wasn't
until June 21st that the Renegades played at
home.
The lone home game for the Renegades came
in the form of a win in front of a capacity crowd
at Dutchess Stadium. Over 5,000 fans came out
to see the Renegades take on the Staten Island

Yankees. It was the first day of summer, the
Renegades home opener and the promotion for
the game was fireworks. The only thing more
American would be if the Renegades were handing out slices of homemade apple pie to the first
1,000 fans.
The Renegades didn't disappoint their hometown fans. The Gades delivered a 5-3 win over
the baby bombers. The standout player of the
game for Hudson valley was Jonathan
Alexander, who was 2-4 with 2 RBIs. He also
made two phenomenal plays in the field that
helped keep the Renegades lead intact.
Alexander made a tremendous diving play to his
left to double up the Yankees Michael O'Neill at
first. This proved to be crucial, because the very
next batter Yeicok Calderon hit a home run to
right. In the end, Derek Loera got the save and
Aaron Griffin received a "W" in his first professional game.
The Renegades went back on the road the very
next night and racked up another impressive win
vs. Staten Island. The Renegades boosted their
record to 6-0 after defeating the baby bombers
4-2. With all but 2 Renegades players getting a
hit, the Gades made easy work of completing the
sweep of the Yankees.
However, after winning six straight, the
Renegades have finally succumbed to defeat.
The 'Gades lost a heartbreaker to the Brooklyn
Cyclones Sunday night in 13 innings. With a
season low seven hits backed by only three runs,
the Renegades were not able to hold on to a lateinning lead and eventually Matthew Oberste singled to right to score L. J. Mazzilli for Brooklyn.
The Renegades hosted the Brooklyn Cyclones
on Monday and Tuesday. They will then play
Staten Island Wednesday and Thursday before
taking to the road to complete the June series
against Brooklyn.
