Second semester begins on January 25, 2016. Please make sure to review second semester schedules to assure they continue to meet the personal and career goals you may have. If you have questions about how to get the most out of your schedule, including work experience, independent study, or courses that may offer both college and high school credit, please make sure to ask a counselor for help. New London High School continues to offer dynamic learning opportunities, make sure to voice your needs so we can continually develop our courses and structure. We are excited to begin a new semester with a fresh start. As a reminder, semester grades are what is reported on a school transcript. Each course attempted is reported for credit and works toward our graduation requirements. Students who did not pass a course this first semester should be sure to check in with a counselor on the implications to their graduation plan. The School Counseling Department is in the process of scheduling students for the 2016-17 school year. Parental involvement in the course selection process is extremely important. Students should bring home a course request form to be signed by their parent/guardians. When students miss all or part of 10 days of school or when they have extensive tardies, they are issued a warning le er. These le ers are sent to encourage communica on with our team. If a endance issues con nue, students will be referred for a truancy cita on. Ul mately, the goal is to have students a end school. If you do have updated medical related concerns or extenua ng reasons for absences, please reach out to the administra on or counseling team to discuss op ons. New PSLO Officer: Officer Chris Dearth joins our School District of New London! Officer Dearth comes to us with over 20 years of experience with Law Enforcement. He connues to work as a liaison to the New London Police Department to advocate on behalf of the law. Senior Scholarships Seniors should regularly check the scholarship board in the Student Service Center. There are already numerous scholarships posted, with many deadlines fast approaching. Scholarship lis ngs are posted on the School Counseling Department website as well. Each year there are scholarships that go unused because there are no applicants. NLHS Juniors Prepare for ACT All juniors at NLHS and across the state will take the ACT plus writing on March 1, 2016 and the ACT WorkKeys on March 2, 2016. There are no fees for these tests and scores may be reported to colleges your student chooses. Teachers are helping prepare students within their classes to take these tests. Students can prepare on their own by using websites such as: (http:// www.actstudent.org/testprep/ and http://www.act.org/qotd), books (The Real ACT Prep Guide in NLHS library) and social media sites such as: twitter (follow @actstudent) Facebook (follow ACTSTUDENT). Civics Test Recent legisla on mandates all public school students in the State of Wisconsin are required to show competency in the area of civics prior to gradua on. American & Global Studies includes civics curriculum and is a class taken in the freshman year. Besides this course, students who will graduate in 2017 and beyond must pass a 100 ques on mul ple choice civics test with a score of 60 or above. To facilitate this requirement, an online test for students in grades 9, 10, and 11 will be given during the week of January 25. The assessment will be comprised of 100 ques ons iden cal to the 100 ques ons that may be asked of an individual during the process of applying for U.S. ci zenship. We will share assessment topics in all social studies courses with students, and they will have the op on to retake the exam each semester if needed. https://my.uscis.gov/prep/test/civics May 3 & 4, 2016 ALL 9th and 10th grade students Spring ACT Aspire 8:008:00-10:00 am 11th and 12th grade students will report for class at 10:15 when ALL classes resume Information Regarding AP There will be an informational meeting held on Monday, February 15, 2016 at 6:00 pm in the high school auditorium. The School Counseling Department will present information on payment for AP Tests, dates of AP Tests, how to prepare for upcoming tests, and other logistical information. AP teachers will also present information on appropriate study habits for the exams. Prep and study sessions will be hosted by instructors later in the year.
