CARIBBEAN
CUBA
CUBA
Cuba has often been called the Isle of Rum, due to a
combination of world famous sugar cane, a favorable
Caribbean climate, fertile soil and the unique know-how of
Cuban “Maestro Roneros” (master rum-makers). One
cannot talk about Cuban rum without mentioning one of its
biggest aficionados, Ernest Hemingway. He loved his
cocktails made with Cuban rum, during his many years of
living and writing in Havana. He was a big fan of Daiquiri's
and Mojito's, two classic rum cocktails with Cuban origin.
Havana Club is probably Cuba’s most famous rum brand,
established in 1878. After the revolution of 1959, the
government nationalized the distillery. Since 1994,
Havana Club is produced by a joint venture between Pernod
Ricard and the Cuban government.

JAMAICA
JAMAICA
The third largest island by area in the Caribbean, Jamaica
is also the most mountainous of the islands with elevations
over 7000 feet or 2300 meters, Settled by Taino Indians from
South America about 1000 BC, Xamayca was named 'land of
wood and water'. Jamaican Rum is naturally fermented for
about 3 weeks, meaning yeast from the air settles on the
surface of the mash. The rum is then distilled twice in pot
stills and aged in oak casks for a minimum of five years.
Though Jamaican Rum is dark; it gets most of its color from
added molasses not from the cask.

HAITI
Haiti follows the French tradition of heavier Rums that are
double distilled in pot stills and aged in oak casks for 3 or
more years to produce full-flavored, exceptionally smoothtasting Rums. Barbancourt is a well-known Haitian rum by
Société du Rhum Barbancourt, T. Gardère & Cie. The
company is one of Haiti's oldest, and its rum is the country's
most famous export, widely regarded as among the finest
rums in the world.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
Dominican rum is ranked among the best in the world. The
fertile topsoil is extraordinarily deep and is surrounded by a
lush and wet landscape. Dominican rum is produced
through a more natural process of distillation, while aging
is often done in special American white oak kegs. This
makes the rum a little heartier and a little less sweet than
other rums made in places like Jamaica and Barbados.

VIRGIN ISLANDS
GUADELOUPE
Making rum for local consumption was a lucrative business
as it was the custom (and still is) to have copious amounts
of alcoholic spirits anywhere two or more gathered, for
whatever the occasion. Virgin Islands rum is usually dry,
light bodied rum close to Puerto Rican rum.
Rum in Guadeloupe is one of the cultural institutions
related to deep Guadeloupian Creole culture, since the first
plantations of raw sugar cane. Rums made in Guadeloupe
are sometimes labeled “appellation of origin”. This term,
which was legal and used in the 1960s, has now been
replaced by the “Designation of Origin” (PDO) which does
not benefit the Guadeloupe distilleries. The appellation
label is agricultural rum is only allowed for agricultural
rum, meaning rum which is produced directly from the
sugar cane juice.

ANTIGUA
BARBADOS
After a hurricane wreaked havoc on the English fleet in
Barbados in 1780, the repair and outfitting center was
moved to Antigua. Horatio Viscount Nelson arrived in
English Harbour in 1784 and became the Commander of the
English fleet. English Harbour became known as Nelson's
Dockyard. English Harbour Rum is considered by many
experts to be one of the finest blends of both Dark and Light
Rum distilled in the Caribbean today.
Rum has been produced in Barbados for over 370 years, and
Barbados rum is recognized as one of the finest (and
strongest!) in the world. A legend says that Barbados rum
found the favor of many English sailors who offered their
bounty of rum as proof that they had crossed the Atlantic.
Today, Mount Gay Rum, founded in 1703, is known as the
oldest brand of rum in existence.

CENTRAL AMERICA
GUATEMALA
NICARAGUA
1948 marked the beginning of the modern era of rum
production in Guatemala. At that time scores of distilleries
in the various Guatemala districts were producing rum for
the local market. Poor transportation, language and
regional differences made national distribution of any
single rum all but impossible. Over the years, many of these
distilleries failed, others combined their production, aging
and bottling companies into what is now Industrias
Licoreras de Guatemala. Today there is only one distillery
making rum, as defined by the Guatemalan laws that
regulate alcohol production, and several others making
cane spirits called aguardente.
Best known for its revolutionary politics, Nicaragua is
gaining attention for its rum, especially for the brand Flor
de Caña. The liquor is still aged in oak barrels along sugar
fields in the northern town of Chichigalpa, where the Pellas
family started its first distillery in 1890. In Nicaragua, it is
the main ingredient for a new national cocktail, the Macua,
which blends rum with guava juice.

COSTA RICA
PANAMA
Costa Rica is a bridge between the cultures of the Americas,
a small piece of land surrounded by two oceans. Its huge
biodiversity and tropical weather are one of a kind and a
favorite among surfers and eco-tourists. Like much of
Central America and the Caribbean, rum is the traditional
spirit of Costa Rica and is the preferred element in
cocktails. Locally made rum benefits from the sub-tropical
climate and volcanic soil in the region. It is ideal for the
cultivation of sugar cane, and therefore the best crops are
utilized for the production of their award winning rum:
Centenario.
Ron de Jeremy Reserva and Ron de Jeremy Spiced are award
winning, exceptionally well-balanced rums. They are hand
crafted by rum legend, 74-year old Cuban-born Master
Blender Francisco “Don Pancho” Fernandez. Launched in
2011, Ron de Jeremy Rum is produced in Panama and has
received an enthusiastic response all over the world.

VENEZUELA
Venezuelan rum outstands from other rums that are
produced in the Caribbean countries because of its special
attributes. This is due to a fusion of a series of geographical
elements leading to a very high quality of molasses. In
addition to this, the tropical climate is ideal: high
temperatures during the day and low at nighttime, produces
positive interaction between the oak wood barrels and the
alcohol inside.

Dictador is produced at the coast of Colombia in Cartagena
de Indias city. The rum is named for Arango Y Ferro who was
nicknamed ‘Dictador’ by the local population (around 1751)
as he rose to prominence in the trade and commerce
between the Spanish Colonies and Spain.
Pichincha is a city in Pichincha Canton in the Manabí
Province in Ecuador. It is situated along the Daule River.
This rum, named after the city, is aged in Pedro Ximénez
sherry casks, sometimes shown by the abbreviation ‘PX’.
This adds to a unique flavor and a rich, smooth finish.

LA REUNION
Like the Caribbean island of Martinique, Madagascar’s
terroir and agriculture affect the aromas and flavors of its
rums. The rums of Dzama are sourced from sugar cane
planted in three geographical areas: Nosy Be island off the
northern Coast of Madagascar; and two other areas in the
northwest and northeast of the mainland.
Today only three rum distilleries, from originally
31 distillates at its peak in 1928, remain operational in
Reunion Island, producing some of the best rum of the
Indian Ocean. There is also a museum dedicated to rum
in Reunion Island: “La Saga du Rhum”.
