RRAN EDITER AS M R ME F A March 2016 March 13 Lecture on Richmond’s Monumental Church Charles Brownell, Emeritus Professor of Architectural History at Virginia Commonwealth University, will speak on “Robert Mills’s Monumental Church in Richmond and American Classicism” at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 13, in Jepson Hall 118 on the campus of the University of Richmond. According to Brownell, “Monumental Church ranks in architectural importance second only to the core of the Virginia State Capital, designed by Thomas Jefferson. “The status of Mills’s church receives a great deal of lip service, but what is it that really makes the building outstanding?” Brownell recently retired after thirty years of teaching in Virginia, at the University of Mary Washington, the University of Virginia, and VCU. He earned a master’s in the Winterthur Program in Early American Culture and a second master’s and a doctorate in Art History at Columbia University. He has lectured and published widely on the Greco-Roman tradition in American architecture, particularly on the work of B.H. Latrobe and Latrobe’s friend Thomas Jefferson. Among other publications, Brownell is a co-author of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts’ The Making of Virginia Architecture, the first general history of IE ET M A ER A R ITE CI RI C OF AM A MCMLXVIII C TY M IE M A I M O S T R U C ER N SO C OF AM E SO MCMLXVIII A R C TY M A M C O S T R U A N SO C IE E C A R ED A EA M N C RRAN EDITER AS M RA AN M SO Volume 44, Number 3 ET M SO ITE CI AN ED AN NEWSLETTER M OF Charles Brownell, Monumental Church Nota Bene: Daylight-Saving Time begins on March 13, so be sure to “spring ahead” on Saturday night.
