It is truly amazing how time seems to fly faster each year. So far this year I am happy to report that things are running smoothly in District 9. We have a board of directors of very dedicated individuals who want to make sure that our District remains the most progressive board in the ACBL. As a district, we have created The Common Game and the Fast Results and we have built up a very good educational fund for our juniors. These are the best ways to give back to our bridge community and I am glad that we are able to do it. I would like to take this opportunity to remind you to participate in the North America Open Pairs. This is a great way to be able to represent District 9 at the national level and have your trip subsidized by the ACBL. The ACBL will provide various subsidies for the event at the Fall NABCs in Phoenix November 28 through December 8, 2013. There will be winners from all three flights, A, B and C. The First place finishers will receive air fare and some hotel nights while the 2nd place winner will receive a stipend to participate in the event. The third place winners will be invited to play in the event. To make it easier for more people to compete in the District finals, we are having the finals at two locations, one on the east coast of Florida and one on the west coast. On the east coast, the location is The Bridge Place in Lake Park and on the west coast, at the St. Petersburg Bridge Club in Saint Petersburg. The dates are Saturday, October 26 through Sunday, October 27. Please refer to the schedule in this issue of the bulletin for more information. Play on Friday in the Special Sectional for warm-up! Please make plans to attend the next Regional, September 23 – 29, at the Naples Grande Hotel in Naples, followed by the Daytona Regional in Daytona Beach on November 4 – 10. I would like to thank you again for being members of the ACBL’s largest and most progressive District. Ruthie, as she was widely known, hailed from Toronto but had a strong presence in Southeast Florida’s bridge community as well. Ruthie was one of the world’s ‘good guys,’ making friends on both sides of the border and keeping them throughout her life. She was always kind and generous, maintaining her wonderful sense of humour throughout her long illness. Ruthie had many bridge accomplishments, but among her most memorable would probably have been starting her bridge career as one of Toronto’s “Four Deuces” in the days of the “Dallas Aces.” She represented District Two in Hawaii in the Grand National Pairs and played for Canada in Biarritz, France and other World Bridge Championships. She will be sorely missed by her children Joanne and Matthew Alter and Deborah Gold, her adoring grandchildren, Rebecca, Daniel, Ethan and Harrison, her cousins and the many people who were lucky enough to call her a friend. --Gloria Bart, Unit 102 There was just no friend like Ruthie. I just smile when I think of her, and she didn't even know how funny she was. At the Deerfield Regional, dozens of her friends were missing her. She was always so patriotic and dressed up in flag attire for our July 4th celebration every year. Ruth contributed so very much to south Florida bridge, as a player, director, and club manager. She always was so generous with her lunches and small gifts to everyone; but most of all with her caring and loving ways. How blessed so many of us were to have been Ruthie's friend and part of her wonderful life. --Charlene Predmest,Unit 128 Our friend Ruth Gold passed away on June 13th after a several year battle with lymphoma. She was 74. Everyone who knew her loved her, and her kind & generous spirit was felt by everyone she met. She was the first one to call when someone was ill, the first one to send a card when a loved one had passed, and the first in line to help celebrate a happy event. She developed several games in the area, first when she was a partner in the Tamarac Bridge Club and later her own games at the Skolnick Center. Her directing style was for everyone to have fun, average+NS & average+EW was her favorite ruling. She ran a team league in Palm Beach, as well as a game at the Palm Beach Country Club, and every player had a great time. She loved bridge cruises and directed on a large number with her friend Bernie Chazen until he passed away a few years ago. She was a great player with over 6,000 master points and loved tournaments, and even represented Canada in a world championship a few years ago. She was the best friend I ever had, and I will miss her. --Bill Howe, Unit 243 OFFICERS BILL RAULD District 9 President Phone: 305-219-2800 [email protected] BETTY SANDIFER District 9 Vice President Mobile Ph: 386-795-7423 [email protected] SHIRLEY SEALS Tournament Committee Chair, Secretary, Treasurer & District 9 Director Home Ph.: 904-285-7767 Mobile Ph.: 904-563-0470 Fax: 904-285-7783 [email protected] PUBLICATION STAFF RICHARD FLEISCHMAN Unit 102 Liaison Phone: 941-580-3719 [email protected] MURIEL ALTUS SBN Editor & Unit 128 Liaison Phone: 813-251-0315 [email protected] SUE SMITH Unit 219 Liaison Phone: 850-995-7125 [email protected] JAN GREENE Unit 240 Liaison 772-299-4301 [email protected] DOLLY DELLON Unit 243 Liaison Phone: 954-484-5006 [email protected] For more contact information look on the District 9 web site, www.District9ACBL.org. www.District9ACBL.org15 They’re Going to Bali! All photos compliments of the USBF and photographer Peg Kaplan. District 9 is proud of its members who will compete in the World Bridge Federation's Championships in Bali Indonesia, beginning September 16th. Playing in the Venice Cup, which is the event for Women's Teams, will be Jenny Wolpert, of Jupiter, playing on the Westheimer squad. Jenny is the mother of two young children and comes from a strong bridge-playing family. The United States is not the first country Jenny has represented in Venice Cup competition. When she met her future husband, Gavin Wolpert, in 2003, she was Jenny Ryman. Then in 2007, she represented Sweden in the Venice Cup. Jenny and Gavin won the Blue Ribbon Pairs in 2005, the youngest pair to do so. Good luck bringing back a medal for the US, Jenny. Captain of the USA1 team to be competing for the d'Orsi Seniors Trophy is Richard (Richie) Schwartz, an ACBL Grand Life Master and a WBF World International Master. Richie won the U.S. Senior Bridge Championship in 2011 and 2012, which led to winning a silver medal at the World Mind Sports games in Lille in 2012. Good luck to Richie and his team playing in Bali for the d'Orsi Trophy. And now we come to The Event, the Bermuda Bowl. Who will be USA1 in Bali? Well, half of the six-person team will be three young players who make Florida their home! One is Gavin Wolpert, who started playing bridge while growing up with his bridge-playing family in Canada. Now with wife Jenny and their two children, Gavin lives in Jupiter. Gavin also represented another country in international competition, before moving to the US, when he played on the Canadian team vying for the Bermuda Bowl. Kevin Bathurst and Kevin Dwyer are partners on this exciting USA1 team. Kevin Bathurst is the newest District 9 member of the team, having lived in South Carolina, Tennessee, California and New York (both at Cornell, in Ithaca, and in NYC) before moving to Florida. Kevin B. at age 34 is the oldest member of the four-person squad that won the right to be known as USA1 in the Bermuda Bowl competition. Kevin Dwyer, the youngest player on the team at 25, is a Floridian from the very beginning of his bridge-playing days. Kevin's mom introduced him to the game, at the well-known McGregor Point Bridge Club in Fort Myers, and then Val Covalciuc, Jayne Thomas and many others encouraged him as he added to his bridgeplaying expertise. We'll all be watching these three young Florida super stars compete for the Bermuda Bowl. Good luck to all of you! 16 ACBL District 9 We asked Gavin Wolpert Wolpert Bathurst Dwyer some questions Wolpert we thought you, our readers, might like to ask him. Here are his answers. Schwartz 1-Tell a little about your first experiences at bridge. I grew up in a big bridge playing family. My parents, brother, grandmother, uncles and aunts all were very passionate about bridge. When my family moved from South Africa to Toronto, my mom gave up her profession as a school teacher and began teaching bridge. As a young player I used to drive to sectionals and regionals around Toronto including stuff in the north of the US like Cleveland and Buffalo, where John Kranyak and Joel Wooldridge are from. We sort of grew up playing together, with Joel being a little older than Kranyak and I. I have great memories of a Toronto regional when I was in my late teens where 3 of my teammates (Kranyak, Bathurst and Wooldridge) drove up and stayed at my house (along with about 5 or 6 other juniors) and everyone crashed in sleeping bags in my basement. 2-Who helped you become an expert? I made the jump from Advanced to Expert when I committed to a partnership with Vincent Demuy. My brother, who was then already on the best team in Canada asked the two of us to be their 3rd pair. It was at that time that I decided to focus my life on bridge. Vince and I were generously given system notes from Italian Superstars, Alfredo Versace and Lorenzo Lauria. The notes were in Italian, but we figured out the language pretty quickly and treated their notes as a bible. After learning a lot of their system... the logic behind it sort of made things click. That along with starting to play on expert teams. Once your teammates are very good, you learn to focus on not making mistakes. Talking about the boards was the most important component of my improvement. Obviously along the way I had help from a number of people... most importantly my Mom and Brother, though a lot of Toronto experts were amazingly generous with their time for juniors, like John Gowdy, Eric Kokish, George Mittleman, and many others. 3-Will this be your first experience representing the US in an international bridge event? Yes this is my first event on the US national team. We moved to the US about 5 years ago. Before that I played internationally on the Canadian team. It was 10 years ago that I had my first chance to play in the Bermuda Bowl (the same year my brother had asked Vincent and me to be their 3rd pair). We missed qualifying for the quarterfinal by 1VP on the last hand of play. It turned out the next day I met Jenny so it worked out for the best. I am so excited to get another shot at the title. 4-What do you hope to do in Bali besides play bridge? Unfortunately with the length of time I will be away for the World Championships, I won't be able to spend any time as a tourist. I have two children at home, a 4-year-old daughter Danielle and a 16-month-old son Brandon. Both my kids are American, so I'm very proud to be representing USA. When my daughter heard that I won the US championships she said, "yayyyy, my daddy is Captain America!" This tournament is very special for my family as my brother is on the Canadian team, with my mother as their NPC. My mom is the proudest mom ever that both her sons have qualified to play for their respective countries. Now with my wife playing in the Venice Cup, it is a really cool moment for the Wolpert Family. Gavin Wolpert • www.bridgewinners.com www.District9ACBL.org17 The Rule of 4 By Michael Donnelly Bridge players are presented with prospects for sizable gains on many deals. Yet they frequently fail to take full advantage of such opportunities. Often the lost opportunity is merely a function of unique distribution and card placement of a particular deal, to which one or both members of a partnership had no reason to suspect, and therefore no reason to have responded in a particular manner. However, there are certain occasions in which the bidding suggests that the prospect for significant gain is quite viable and that the means to fully exploit partnership prospects should be maximized. One such situation that occurs relatively often involves an auction in which partner’s opening one bid is followed by a direct takeout double by the opponents. When the auction begins in such a manner it is customary for the opening bidder’s partner to redouble when holding 10 or more HCP. As the opening bid suggests values, both members of the partnership can reasonably assume that they hold the majority of high-card assets whenever the auction begins in this precise manner. It follows that the potential for a sizable penalty of the opponent’s ultimate contract looms large if they fail to find a satisfactory trump fit, regardless of the bidding level. The key factor is whether the opponents can locate a satisfactory trump fit. This typically suggests a combined eightcard holding or better. If they are unable to locate such a fit, in conjunction with their meager high-card assets, they may be in great peril. Occasionally the opponents cannot locate an adequate fit simply because one does not exist. Following partner’s takeout double, responder’s longest suit is frequently that of the opponent’s opening bid. Even when holding a second suit of four-card length, the guaranty of a suitable trump fit is not assured. With all this in mind, the partnership that holds the bulk of high-card values should consider a penalty double when the opponents are unable to locate an adequate trump fit. To this end the partnership employs, “The Rule of Four.” How It Works: After the auction: Any one-of-a-suit bid by partner; takeout double by opponent; redouble by responder: As the bidding indicates that your side holds the majority of values, the “Rule of Four” encourages both members of the partnership to either 1) make a penalty double when holding four or more cards in the opponent’s last bid suit, or 2) when holding less than four cards in the opponents’ bid suit, defer to partner by passing, unless passing would end the auction and allow the opponents to play in an undoubled contract. Since a double in such situations shows a four-card holding or greater, partner needs only a doubleton in that suit in order to guarantee that the opponents lack a suitable trump holding. The opponents’ lack of a sufficient trump suit, in conjunction with their known-to-be lesser assets, suggests that the potential for partnership gain is excellent. When partner does make a “four-card or greater” penalty double, one does not ordinarily pass when holding fewer than two cards in the doubled suit. Singletons and voids in the opponents’ suit suggest declaring as opposed to defending, as the opponents appear to have located a satisfactory trump suit. At such times your partnerships’ combined assets will usually assure a plus score in any of several other suitable contracts. Occasionally neither member of the partnership holds as many as four cards in an opponent’s bid suit. Exacting a meaningful penalty may be difficult under such circumstances, thus encouraging the partnership to seek a satisfactory contract of its own. Michael Donnelly - [email protected] 18 ACBL District 9 Two Suited Overcalls By Maxwell Hughes Miles Storfer describes an alternative to Michaels two-suited overcalls, Colorful Cue Bids, to show either 5-5 in the red suits or 5-5 in the blacks (Sunshine Bridge News, July/August 2013). However, using either, coupled with any variant of the Unusual No-Trump, still leaves the fundamental problem of trying to use two bids to address three situations. Over one of a suit, there are exactly three possible 5-5 holdings. Over one heart they are 5-5 in spades and diamonds, 5-5 in spades and clubs, and 5-5 in diamonds and clubs; and similarly over each of the other one-suit bids. And, importantly, the probability of your holding each 5-5 combination is precisely the same. The solution is of course to add a third bid, and one option uses the so-called 3-club cue-bid. Over a one-level suit bid, an overcall of 3-clubs shows 5-5 in the top and bottom suits of the remaining three suits. Over one-spade, it shows five hearts and five clubs; over one-heart it’s spades and clubs, over onediamond it’s spades and clubs and over one-club it’s spades and diamonds. The Unusual Two No-Trump overcall continues to show the two lower unbid suits, but Michaels is modified to show the upper two unbid suits. Thus over one-heart, a two-heart cue-bid shows five spades and five diamonds. One would show five spades and five clubs by bidding three clubs (Alert). The recommended point count required by a 3-club cue bid is of course the same as for its two companions – less than that of an opening bid, or greater than 15. With 11 to 15, one bids the two suits sequentially, though my opponents never seem to allow me to bid the second suit this side of the stratosphere! This total package is called Questem and can be looked up on the Web by Googling "Questem”, where you may also come across the original version called Ghestem, after its inventor. What’s the down-side of Questem? Well, it’s one more thing to remember. Many an expert urges that we lesser mortals keep our bidding systems simple. While it’s clearly silly to attempt to learn more than one’s brain can permanently hold, conventions are the language of bridge, and the larger one’s vocabulary, the better. Also, using the 3-club overcall in the new way takes away its use to show a pre-emptive, weakish six or seven clubs. And, of course, when one of you forgets this, it’s a fiasco, and then when it is remembered, there’s the “failure to alert” followed by “we were damaged.” I play Questem with all my regular partners, but when first explaining it I always stress the one tricky part: over an opening one-club, a two-club cue-bid shows 5 spades and 5 hearts, Michaels, while a three-club cue-bid shows 5 spades and 5 diamonds (top and bottom). I then watch my partners teach their other partners the joys of being able to overcall the complete set of 5-5 holdings. Bids showing top and bottom suits cannot be too rare, for BridgeBuddy’s alternative to the ACBL convention card does have a check box for “top/bottom”. I thought I would introduce myself to you as the new author of Director’s Corner by offering some hints on how to decide in some of these "multiple choice” situations. Opening Lead Out-of-Turn Avoiding this situation is a good reason for making the opening lead face down. Then, if it’s actually partner’s lead, you haven’t exposed a card and given the declarer the chance to make choices. As declarer, if you carelessly play on the incorrect lead, you’ve accepted it. If you’ve started to face your hand as the dummy, you can continue and have partner become declarer. If, however, you notice before you play and call the Director, you will be given the infamous five options: 1. Accept the lead and see the dummy before you play from your hand. You want to be declarer(say you opened 1NT and want to keep your hand concealed). You decide that you like the lead for some reason. For instance, you have AJ10x in the suit, and the lead is the King. 2. You like the lead, but you have the weaker hand, so you decide to accept and face your hand. For instance, partner opened 1H, you responded 1NT, and partner bid 3NT. It’s better, you think, to have partner play it. In fact, having much the weaker of the declaring hands is one of the big reasons for accepting the lead from the wrong side. 3. Refuse the lead and require that the same suit be led by the correct leader. Let’s say you have K1097 in the suit, and you’re pretty sure the correct leader has a holding like AQJxxx. You don’t want the lead through your holding, but you’d benefit by a lead up to your hand. Or you might have Kx and figure you’d rather have one guaranteed trick in the suit than no trick at all if your right hand opponent gets the lead and finesses your king. If you require the correct leader to lead the suit, his partner puts away the card led in error and can play whatever card he wishes to this trick. If the correct leader holds the lead, he’s allowed to switch to another suit if he wishes. 4. Refuse the lead and say you want no one to lead the suit. Now, the incorrectly led card goes back in your right hand opponent’s hand, but the correct leader must not lead the suit you’ve barred until he has lost the lead and regained it. He can’t table a winner in another suit and then switch to the banned suit. A good time for that choice is, for instance, when you have only one stopper in the suit and want to delay its being led. Another time might be when you are declarer in a likely 5-3 fit, where you have the five card suit and are void in the suit led. Trumping in your hand could be expensive and you might want to ban the lead. 5. Allow the opening leader to lead anything he likes while his partner leaves the lead out of turn on the table as a penalty card. Frankly, this option isn’t exercised very often, but it’s certainly your right to choose it. You may feel that expressing any opinion about the suit led gives away too much information, and that this show of insouciance is psychologically effective. As long as that card 20 ACBL District 9 is on the table, it’s a penalty card and you have some choices if his partner gets the lead while the penalty card is exposed. When one of the defenders has a penalty card and his partner has the lead, the declarer again has choices: He can require or forbid the lead of the suit of the penalty card. But if he tells the leader what to do, he can’t also require that the penalty card be played; it goes back in the hand. On the other hand, the person with the penalty card has to play it at the first opportunity—to lead, to follow suit or to discard. Even if you wish the opponent weren’t going to lead that suit, for instance, neither you nor he has any choice. Later in the hand, some of the same choices can arise when a person who has not won a trick thinks he has and leads. This is most common when a “winner” has been trumped or when one person thinks he has won the trick and doesn’t notice that his partner has played an even higher card. And then there’s the lucky person who thought he was discarding a little spade on his partner’s Ace of Hearts, only to be reminded that in fact spades are trump. You should call the Director. The declarer will be given the option to accept the lead out of turn. Should the declarer not wish to accept, the card played in error becomes a penalty card, and the declarer retains some rights as long as it is on the table. If it’s declarer who has erred, either defender—without any consultation—may accept the lead. Call the Director: that’s a refrain you’ll hear all Directors using. We all wish we were given more and more timely opportunities to do our job. To help the game run smoothly and restore equity when there has been an error.
