General Information



Learning a language takes much time. Practice Spanish every day. Find friends, peers, colleagues, and family
members with whom to practice Spanish. You will use Spanish in class with your classmates and me as much
as possible.
A major goal of the course is spontaneous, oral communication, which depends on daily exposure to
the language and daily practice. Work in class will often go beyond the textbook. For instance, study
the material designated for coverage on a certain day and complete the assigned exercises before
that class. Keep up with assignments; try not to fall behind. Ask for help!
This is a 5-credit class that requires a great deal of time in outside study and preparation. If you miss more
than
three days without a written justification, it will lower your final grade by half a letter.

Students who succeed in Spanish devote time every day after class to studying and completing homework.

Motivation and perseverance. Expect to spend at least 2 hours practicing Spanish every day.
As a courtesy to others and to avoid distractions turn your cell phones off

Please, do not eat in class.
Rights and responsibilities
1. Be punctual.
After 5 minutes it is too late to come in class.
2. As a member of Pierce College we agree to abide by its Laws and understand that we have rights and
responsibilities to maintain a positive learning environment. Refer to the Pierce College Chapter
132K-126 WAC–STUDENT RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES AND STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT.
3. I am confident you all chose to be at Pierce College to learn and know how to behave appropriately.
However, if you choose to disrupt class, you will be asked to leave. You must talk to me in my office, and you
may have to appear before the Dean of Student Success, and the Dean of Arts & Humanities Division.
4. I am also confident most of you will choose to be an honest person. However, if you are caught cheating
on a quiz or exam, you will receive a “0” for that quiz, and will not be allowed to continue taking this class.
5. Plagiarism and Cheating. Please note that any work done outside of the class is expected to be your own
work, without the help of others. Refer to the Pierce College student manual on Plagiarism. When you
turn in a paper with your name on it, the name serves as a contractual agreement with me (the
instructor) that it is your own work and not that of another person or entity.

Arriving to class late or missing class will lower your participation grade.
10%

been given permission by the instructor. Speaking in English at the wrong time will lower
your participation grade.

comprehensive 50 minute exam. Exams must be taken at the date and time scheduled.
Quizzes & Exams
60%

quizzes will be sometime unannounced. However, the lowest grade for quizzes 1-5 will be
dropped.
Each quiz/exam will be taken in class without the use of notes, books or electronic
devices. There will be No make-up quizzes and dictations. There will be no make-up
exams, except for emergency situations. You will need to contact me within 48 hours and
provide written documentation.
Homework
A. Online
B. In-class written
assignments
A. 10%
Online homework to be completed outside of class. This homework will be done online at
the following website: http://vhlcentral.com. This homework is designed to help you learn
independently, so try to get a little bit ahead. Keeping up with homework will make class
much more comprehensible, which will lead to greater acquisition of Spanish. There is a
direct correlation to people who do the daily online homework and those that earn high
marks in the class.
Homework online due day all at the end of the lesson, at night by 11:50pm. Check
webpage- Calendar assignments.
You will also keep a handwritten journal of various readings that you complete
throughout the quarter. Short paragraphs or compositions assigned in class. Always turn
them in typed on a separate sheet of paper.
A. Dialogue. This will be presented with a classmate. I expect you will practice with
Your classmate in person and/or by phone at least once a week.
A. Dialogue: Oral

B. Oral exam

Length: 4-7 minutes without any notes in hand. Write a script that you and your
classmates will practice for at least 2 weeks prior to the due date. You will turn in the
script on the day of the Dialogue. You don´t need to memorize it; however, you should be
able to follow the conversation with your peers in a natural way (be familiar with the
vocabulary, grammatical structures you have prepared, etc.)
Topics: shopping/clothes, past tense (pretérito), daily routine, and food preferences
(lessons 6-8).
B. Oral exam/presentation. There will be an oral exam covering a story we will create in
class. In groups of three, students will create one story about the Hispanic culture
presented in lessons 6-9. More details as we approach the exam.

or did not officially withdraw

I do not discuss grades by e-mail or phone however, I am available to talk to you in person about
your overall grade during my office hours and by appointment.. Official grades will be available on
Tuesday, June 21.
Class withdrawal: If you must drop this class, you must do it officially before the end of the 7th week;
otherwise, your final grade will be “0”. No Incompletes will be granted in this class, unless you have a lifethreatening situation at the end of the quarter, and you have been passing this course.
Absence Policy
Being in class is absolutely critical for your success in the course. Due to the intensive nature of the course,
anytime you miss a class you will fall behind. Once that happens, it is almost impossible to catch up. If you
have an unexcused absence, you will lose your participation points as well as any quiz points from that day.
If you miss three or more classes for any reason (including excused absences), your final grade will be
docked an additional 10 percent. Vacations, work conflicts, etc. are not excuses for missing class.
Extra Credit
Occasionally there may be opportunities to earn extra credit throughout the quarter. However, it won’t be
enough to compensate for not doing other work. If you need help, don’t wait. Come see me right away with
specific questions during my office hours or make an appointment.
EVACUATION PROCEDURES
1. Take all personal belongings with you and stay as far as possible from any buildings.
2. Do not re-enter the buildings until the all-clear signal has been given.
3. If you hear an intermittent alarm (life-threatening situation), we may remain outside for at least an hour.
ACCESS AND DISABILITY SERVICES
Your experience in this class is important to me, and it is the policy and practice of Pierce College to create
inclusive and accessible learning environments consistent with federal and state law. If you experience
barriers based on disability, please seek a meeting with the Access and Disability Services (ADS) manager to
discuss and address them. If you have already established accommodations with the ADS manager, please
bring your approved accommodations (green sheet) to me at your earliest convenience so we can discuss
your needs in this course.
ADS offers resources and coordinates reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities. Reasonable
accommodations are established through an interactive process between you and the ADS manager, and I
am available to help facilitate them in this class. If you have not yet established services through ADS, but
have a temporary or permanent disability that requires accommodations (this can include but not be limited
to; mental health, attention-related, learning, vision, hearing, physical or health impacts), you are
encouraged to contact ADS at 253-840-8335 (Puyallup).
