SCENARIO:
READ THE SCENARIO AND WRITE WHAT EACH PHILOSOPHY MIGHT
DECIDE BASED ON THEIR TEACHINGS AND BELIEFS. MAKE SURE THAT
YOU DESCRIBE WHY THAT RELIGION WOULD DECIDE THE WAY IT DOES.
State officials are creating a bill that would
require students in grades K – 8 to wear
uniforms. Many principals, teachers, and
parents feel that uniforms would help
establish a more serious academic
environment and eliminate many discipline
problems. Students, however, feel that by all
wearing the same clothes, they lose a basic
freedom that allows them to express their
individuality. What advice do you think
followers of Buddha, Confucius and Laozi
would give to the state officials?
Buddha

Followers of Buddha would most likely advise
state officials that if uniforms would provide a
more conducive learning environment, they should
implement the plan. Moreover, students should
give up some of their own prerogative in order to
create a safe environment.
Confucius

Followers of Confucius would most likely advise
state officials to go ahead with the idea, because
uniformity would provide social order and stability,
as well as reinforce group solidarity.
Laozi

Followers of Laozi would most likely advise state
officials not to implement the plan, because
uniforms might inhibit students’ individuality and
development.
