PREMIUM TAP BALKS, STALKS, RUNS AWAY
FINAL EXAM FOR DISCREET CAT
Coming off his excellent third-place effort to Invasor
(Arg) and Bernardini in the GI Breeders’ Cup Classic at
Churchill Nov. 4, Premium Tap (Pleasant Tap) penned
the perfect sequel, charging
from just off the pace to
post a powerful 7 1/4-length
victory in yesterday’s GI
Clark H. Spotting the competition anywhere from two
to 11 pounds, the bay
proved a handful for the
Premium Tap heads to the post starters, who were forced to
load him backwards from
for the BC Classic CDI photo
the front of the stalls after
balking for several minutes. But, once the race was on,
it was all business for the progressive four-year-old,
who took aim on the tiring Wanderin Boy (Seeking the
Gold) at the head of the stretch before punching home
a much-the-best winner. Cont. p2
Forty horses have taken a crack at Godolphin’s undefeated Discreet Cat (Forestry) and the closest any one
of them has gotten to the blaze-faced bay colt at the
finish is 3 1/2 lengths. That is likely to change this
afternoon when the three-yearold faces a compact, but classy
field of older rivals in the GI Hill
‘n’ Dale Cigar Mile H. at Aqueduct. Purchased from Joyce
Robsham off his big-figure
maiden victory at Saratoga last
August, the son of GISW Pretty
Discreet Cat A Coglianese Discreet is coming off a 10 1/4length thrashing of his peers at a
nickel on the dollar in the GII Jerome Breeders’ Cup H.
Oct. 1 and Rick Mettee, assistant to trainer Saeed bin
Suroor, is looking forward to today’s challenge. “I was
a little disappointed the Jerome came up as easy as it
did,” Mettee said. “I wanted a little more of a test for
him. He’ll get that test Saturday and we’ll finally be
able to have a barometer on him. It’s time for him to be
pushed.” Cigar Mile preview cont. p5

KICKING ASH
Askhal Way (Ire) (Ashkalani {Ire}) kicked off what
could be a fantastic weekend for Godolphin, bursting
through the stretch to win the GI Citation H. at Hollywood Park. Never much more than a decent handicap
horse overseas, the chestnut has taken a liking to racing in this country. Yesterday was his sixth victory
from seven starts, his first in Grade I company, and it
came fairly easy, according to his jockey. “We had a
perfect trip,” said Garrett Gomez, who has the call
aboard Discreet Cat today. “I was by myself down the
backstretch. I felt a little pressure coming about the
half-mile pole and I went ahead and put him in gear.”

Clark H. co nt.
Premium Tap raised some eyebrows when he defeated Sun King in the July 7 Albert the Great S., but,
in his first try against Invasor, could do no better than
fifth in the GI Whitney H. Aug. 5. He lit the tote at 31-1
when he won the GI Woodward S. at Saratoga Sept. 2
and was a troubled fifth as the chalk in the GIII Kentucky Cup Classic at Turfway Sept. 30. That result cost
Kent Desormeaux the ride in the Classic, but he was
back in the boot for the Clark. Settled in third behind
dueling frontrunners, Premium Tap angled off the fence
cornering into the stretch and put the race to rest in a
few strides. The final time was just 0.11 seconds off
the track record set by Victory Gallop in the 1999 Stephen Foster H. and broke the stakes record by over a
full second. Click for the brisnet.com chart or the free

Ashkal Way posted his only two wins in Europe at

before taking a valuable and competitive handicap two
months later. He raced in Sheikh Hamdan’s colors when
third in a grassy handicap over the Nad Al Sheba turf
this past Feb. 24, but has been a different beast since
donning Godolphin blue. The winner of the July 15
Elkwood S. at Monmouth Park, he suffered his lone
stateside defeat to date w hen runner-up in the GII
Fourstardave H. at Saratoga Aug. 6. He bounced back
with a neck victory in the GII Bernard Baruch H. at the
Spa Aug. 26 and was most recently a head victor of
the GII Kelso Breeders’ Cup H. on the Belmont Park
grass course Sept. 30. Sweet Return (Elmaam ul) sped
to the early advantage, but Silent Name (Jpn) (Sunday
Silence), the pacesetter in the GI Breeders’ Cup Mile,
refused to relax and went up outside that one at the
five-eighths. Ashkal Way commenced his rally entering
the final bend, came wide on the turn and into the
stretch and crusied home under a full head of steam.

*Rahys’ Appeal finished first, but was disqualified to
second.
Rahys’ Appeal crossed the line as clearly the best in
the Top Flight, but had the win taken away from her
when jockey Alan Garcia inadvertently struck the nose
of Malibu Mint with his whip past midstretch. Purchased privately by John and Martha Jane Mulholland
off a runner-up finish in the Winning Colors H. at Churchill May 27, Malibu Mint immediately rewarded that
decision, sweeping to a 3 3/4-length victory in the GI
Princess Rooney H. at Calder July 15. Second by a
neck in the GII Honorable Miss H. at Saratoga Aug. 4,
she ballooned to sixth in the GI Ballerina Breeders’ Cup
S. at the Spa Aug. 27, but atoned for that defeat with
a track-record setting victory in Turfway Park’s Weekend Delight S. Sept. 23, stopping the Teletimer in 1:08
2/5. She made it two straight w ith a one-length score
in the GIII Thoroughbred Club of America S. at
Keeneland Oct. 14, but was an overmatched 12th
against the boys in the GI Breeders’ Cup Sprint Nov. 4.
Stretching to the one-turn mile for this, Malibu Mint
found herself uncustomarily close to the front as
Yolanda B. Too (Two Punch) took them along through
swift fractions of :23.41 and :46.46. Rahys’ Appeal,
neatly tucked away inside and just behind the leaders
after a stumbling start, angled out turning for home and
took aim on the three-wide Malibu Mint. Rahys’ Appeal
was well on her way to the victory when misfortune
struck and she lost the race upon review. “The horse
came out into my whip,” Garcia commented. “In general, my horse ran a big race. Anyway, I knew I had
horse at the three-eighths pole. I was still waiting on
her at the quarter-pole.” Favored Mo Cuishle (Saint
Ballado), perfect in three previous starts, made a middle
move, but flattened out in upper stretch and finished
last. Click for the brisnet.com chart or the free

Whatsthescript debuted with a third-place effort in a

shifted to Roscommon to graduate by a head going
seven furlongs over yielding ground July 10. The bay
hooked tough-as-nails Teofilo (Ire) in the Listed Tyros S.
back at Leopardstown July 29 and ran with credit to
the would-be champion, finishing third by 2 3/4
lengths. Purchased privately in a deal brokered by former trainer and TVG personality Frank Lyons, the colt
was rested and made his first stateside appearance a
winning one, besting Warning Zone by a half-length in
the restricted Pinjara S. going a mile over the Santa
Anita turf course Oct. 26. The form of that race was
franked when the runner-up came back to win the first
division of the Generous and Whatsthescript was dispatched the even-money chalk. Settled outside for the
run up the backstretch, Whatsthescript advanced on
the far turn, overtook Sevengoldnm issiles in upper
stretch and got to gaw king late, but remained clear
with jockey Isias Enriquez standing in the stirrups the
final 25 yards. “He was dragging me all the way
around,” the winning rider said. “He's the best horse
I've ever ridden on the grass. I give all the credit to this
horse. It's like riding a Ferrari.”

Warning Zone closed smartly to finish second in his
5 1/2-furlong debut over the Hollywood lawn June 24,
then resurfaced with a narrow victory going one mile
over the Del Mar lawn Aug. 23. The bay led the field in
the stretch in Santa Anita’s Pinjara S. Oct. 26, but tired
to late to finish second, beaten a half length. With
Corey Nakatani in the irons here, he settled in fifth as
Quietly Mine (Belong to Me) and Private Wind battled
through easy fractions of :24.66 and :49.05 fractions.
Kept toward the outside on the turn for home, Warning
Zone rallied down the center of the track to overtake
the early leaders and drew off to w in for fun. "It's
called position,” Nakatani commented. “The pace was
slow and positioning means everything. He's a very
nice horse and John [Sadler] was pointing him for this
race. He's improving all the time and there's no doubt
he's a very nice horse.” Optari, favored at odds of 2-1,
never got a chance to run after being blocked for most
of the stretch. “I never really had a shot to go anywhere,” jockey David Flores said. Private Wind crossed
the line third, but was demoted to seventh for drifting
out in the stretch.

Nightmare Affair raced in traffic on the backstretch

of Thor’s Echo. With a fair amount of speed signed on
and with the possiblity of a more level playing field, the
five-year-old gets the nod and should be finishing fastest of all. Trainer Doug O’Neill sends the Sprint victor in
an attempt to solidify claims to an Eclipse. The chestnut has done barely anything wrong this year and his
15-1 odds in the Sprint were overlaid, given his runnerup efforts in the G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen and the GI
Ancient Title Breeders’ Cup S. Attila’s Storm, fifth after
arguing the pace at Churchill, should be ready for a
peak effort in just his fourth start of the season and
third off an eight-month layoff.

prepped for this with a runner-up effort in the JBC
Classic at Kawasaki Nov. 3. Blue Concorde followed his
win in the Nambu Hai with a two-length success from
Meisho Battler in the JBC Mile Nov. 2, but must negotiate an extra 500 meters today. Alondite, a grandson of
Kingmabo, is perfect in two tries at this distance, having graduated at this track June 10 and posting a 3/4length score in the Gintei S. at this venue Oct. 22.

Nobiz Like Shobiz, a 10 1/2-length maiden winner
going eight furlongs at Belmont Sept. 9, was sent off
the 7-5 chalk in the Oct. 14 GI Champagne S. and
nearly got the job done, finishing 3/4 of a length behind
Scat Daddy in second. “He was relatively green, and
the horse that beat him had some experience,” trainer
Barclay Tagg told Daily Racing Form. He added, “I think
he’ll relish [the two turns]. I ran him a mile first time
out because I didn’t think he was a sprinter.” Phipps
homebred Sightseeing followed up on his nose decision
over Timber Reserve in a Sept. 28 maiden event with a
runner-up effort behind Day Pass in the Nov. 3 GIII
Nashua S. over this track. He should appreciate the
added route. Timber Reserve, a $400,000 FTFFEB
juvenile, shipped to Churchill to get his first victory
going a mile Oct. 29.
Miss Goodnight, from the team that brought you
Afleet Alex, rom ped by 9 1/2 lengths in a Delaware
maiden race Oct. 9. The bay came back to take the
Oct. 28 Blue Hen S. at that track in her first attempt at
a route and looms the one to beat here. Boca Grande
improved off a third in her career opener at Saratoga to
win by 5 1/4 lengths in a mile test at Belmont Oct. 18
and should have no trouble with two turns in her stakes
bow . Successful Outlook broke her maiden at first
asking in the mud at Belmont Oct. 1 and added a 1 1/2length score in the Nov. 3 GIII Tempted S. Her connections are not concerned about the extra panel here. “In
the Tempted, she was the only one going on at the end
of the race,” Toby Sheets, assistant to trainer Scott
Blasi, told Daily Racing Form. “She’s a special filly.”

Tiz Wonderful proved more than w orthy of his
$475,000 FTFFEB price tag when breaking his maiden
by 12 1/2 lengths at Saratoga Sept. 2 and was nearly
as impressive in the Oct. 29 GIII Iroquois S., cruising to
a 6 3/4-length tally over What a Tale. The Stonestreet
colorbearer has trained well at Churchill and will be a
short price to remain undefeated. “Chances like him
don’t come around all the time,” said trainer Scott
Blasi. “This is a test that will help us learn a lot about
him, as he’s running back in races four weeks apart.
I’m excited about leading him over.” Any Given Saturday is also prefect in two starts, taking a Turfway

JAPAN CUP-G1, ¥476,000,000, 3yo/up, 2400mT
Freedonia (GB) (Selkirk), one of two overseas hopefuls for Sunday’s race, is slowly coming around after
reportedly spiking a slight fever and losing weight on
the journey to the Orient. “Running a fever after a
journey is not uncommon and w e’re not concerned,”
com mented trainer John Hamm ond, who arrived in
Tokyo Thursday night. “Unfortunately, [Freedonia] was
delayed a day coming over here, which we could have
done w ithout, and she lost a fair bit of weight, which is
normal in a journey. She’s taking a little bit of time to
put it back on which is why we’re training he pretty
lightly.” The four-year-old filly, a Niarchos homebred,
won the G2 Prix de Pomone Aug. 6 and w as most
recently second to English Channel in the GI Turf Classic Invitational in New York.
Lord Derby’s Ouija Board (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire})
continues to train strongly over the Fuchu Racecourse.
“She has a big appetite and she’s in great condition,”
commented trainer Ed Dunlop. “Everything is going
perfectly.” The GI Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf heroine w ill be ridden by Frankie Dettori.
Heart’s Cry (Jpn) (Sunday Silence), narrowly runnerup in this last year and the only horse to defeat favored
Deep Impact (Jpn) (Sunday Silence) at home, worked
800 meters on the uphill gallop at the Ritto Training
Center in :50.7 yesterday. Jockey Christophe PatriceLemaire acknowledged that Deep Impact is the one to
deny, but added, “We've beaten him once and I have to
believe we can beat him a second time.”

SADLER’S WELLS COLT TOPS TATTS Yesterday's record-breaking penultimate session of the
Tattersalls December Foal Sale saw an amazing 42
six-figure transactions. Leading the was hip 1207, a
420,000gns Sadler's Wells half-brother to the dual G1
winner Landseer (GB). He was bred by Rockwell Bloodstock and sold from the Swinburn family's Genesis
Green Stud. Demi O'Byrne,
acting for the Coolmore trio of
Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith
and John Magnier, outbid Co
Cork agent Denis Sheehy for
the colt. "Landseer was a really good colt and this fellow
was very good looking," said
O'Byrne. "He'll head to
Coolmore now and hopefully
Lot 1207
he will race for the usual
Tattersalls photo
team." The dispersal from
Roger Baines's Britton House Stud included a pair of
popular colts. Camas Park Stud's Timmy Hyde saw off
Sheehy for a 370,000gns Sadler's Wells half-brother to
both the 2003 G1 Irish Oaks runner-up L'Ancresse and
G1 Prix Saint-Alary heroine Cerulean Sky. "Prices are
expensive, but at least with a page like that you've got
a chance,” Hyde said of hip 1147. “He'll be resold next
year." Sheikh Mohammed team's acquired hip 1145, an
Elusive Quality half-brother to G2 winner Mr. Mellon.
John Ferguson outbid Sheehy for the 325,000gns colt.
"It's unusual for foals with such a serious pedigree to
become available at public auction nowadays," said
Ferguson. "The dam, Mackie, was outstanding and she
has produced a neat attractive colt who will go to Ireland now. There's a chance he could race in America,
but we've got plenty of time to decide." Hyde also paid
285,000gns to outbid agent Bert Kerr for hip 1102, a
beautifully-related Montjeu colt out of Alabastrine (GB).
"Compared to what some of the others were making
there was some sense in his price," said Hyde. "I love
the sire, he's out of a Green Desert mare and it's a
fantastic family. I should think he will be resold next
year." The sale concludes today with a session starting
at 10:30 a.m.

passed away Wednesday at New York’s North Shore

About six months ago, it came

another gear later that decade when Lakeville Miss was

honors in 1981, but his big horse was Groovy, the
champion sprinter of 1987. According to Carlos Martin,
there was to be a small, private ceremony in honor of
his father.

Record Opening Day Crowd in New Orleans:
The return of racing to New Orleans drew a record
opening-day attendance of 8,732 on a sunsplashed, 70degree Thanksgiving Day afternoon. The previous mark
was established Nov. 27, 1997, when the historic track
reopened its doors after being reconstructed following a
fire. The on-track handle of $616,078 was the third
highest in the history of the facility, behind only Louisiana Derby day of 2005 and 2000.

Borel Undergoes Wrist Surgery:
Calvin Borel, the leading jockey at the fall meeting at
Churchill Downs, underwent surgery yesterday to repair
multiple fractures in his w rist suffered in a m ishap in
Thursday’s fifth race. The 40-year-old, regular rider of
GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile hero Street Sense, was
aboard Janis Whitham’s Pew in the 1 1/8-mile turf
maiden when the three-year-old gelding appeared to clip
heels and fell to the turf. The Ian Wilkes-trainee suffered a catastrophic injury to an ankle and was
euthanized on the track. Through Thursday’s racing,
Borel held a 23-20 advantage over Shaun Bridgmohan
in the race for top jockey. He was scheduled to pilot
the victorious Ermine in the GII Falls City H. Eddie Castro picked up the mount following Borel’s injury.

The bay was given a break after that performance, but
tired to be last when racing against the come-frombehind bias in her return, a Keeneland allowance test
Oct. 17. Allow ed to settle in third this time, the 5-1
shot was five wide as they raced into the stretch and
finished well to hand 3-2 La Cocasse (Arg) (Mutakddim)

This race became a more open affair when the connections of Cambiocorsa decided to scratch out in favor
of Sunday’s GI Matriarch S. on the turf. Taking full
advantage of the absence of that likely favorite was
Gn. Group Meeting, who was in search of her first win
since taking the CTBA Marian S. at the 2005 Fairplex
meeting. Put away for the season off a fourth in the Cal
Cup Distaff H. last November, the homebred was a 3-1
chance in the GII A Gleam H. in her July 1 return to
action, but came home a well beaten fourth. She filled
the same spot in an open optional claimer at the Seaside Aug. 16, but rallied in her next to be third in the
Pio Pico S. at the Fairplex Sept. 15. She failed to get in
front of a single horse in her latest, the Oct. 22 Pine
Tree Lane S. at Santa Anita, and was the fourth choice
in a field of eight. Settled in sixth for the opening halfmile, Gn. Group Meeting came out for the drive and
rallied past four rivals in the final furlong en route to the
victory. Video, sponsored by Taylor Made.

TCA Season Auction to Include Bernardini:
A season to likely three-year-old champion Bernardini
has been added to the offerings that will be auctioned
off at the 17th annual Thoroughbred Charities of America Stallion Season and Art Auction. The event will
begin with a telephone auction, with bids for the seasons accepted from Monday, Nov. 27 through Wednesday, Nov. 29, and conclude with a silent auction during
a dinner honoring the Barbaro team at the Keeneland
Entertainment Center Friday, Dec. 1. In addition to
Bernardini, the list of seasons is highlighted by Unbridled’s Song, Bluegrass Cat, Songandaprayer, Awesome
Again, Speightstown, Bellamy Road, Vindication and
Dynaformer. Trainer Todd Pletcher will donate 26 seasons to the event. Items in the silent auction include oil
paintings, bronzes, watercolors, photographs, prints,
vacations, jewelry and tickets to sporting events. The
auction, now in its 17th year, raised $1.9 million last
year. Proceeds of the auction will be distributed among
about 150 organizations involved with horse rescue and
retraining and with backstretch aid, including scholarships, therapeutic riding and equine research. For additional information and a complete list of seasons, visit
the TCA website at www.thoroughbredcharities.org or
call the hotline at (302) 376-6289. For reservations to
the dinner, call (859) 312-5531.

KELLY FACES CORRUPTION CHARGES
Jockey Shane Kelly will be charged with three counts
of corruption by the Horseracing Regulatory Authority,
it was announced yesterday. The HRA are expected to
charge the currently injured rider over his contact with
warned-off punter and former owner Ajaz Khan, for
“providing inside information for reward,” “aiding and
abetting a corrupt practice,” and “misleading investigators.” Kelly told the Post, “I have nothing to hide and
categorically deny all the allegations. I stress these
allegations are not related to race-fixing and I will do
whatever I can to help the HRA in their investigation
and, indeed, have fully assisted them ever since this
blew up.” The allegations surround 14 races between
November 2004 and April 2005. Yesterday, the HRA
announced that three other jockeys, Josh Byrne, David
Nolan and the currently unlicensed Fran Ferris, as well
as trainer Phil McEntee, Ajaz Khan and six unlicensed
individuals, have been informed that they face charges
in relation to 40 races run between September 2004
and March 2005. The hearing is not expected to take
place until next March.
WINSTON HAS TO FACE HRA
Robert Winston learned yesterday that his challenge
that he has “no case to answer” to corruption charges
has been rejected by the Horseracing Regulatory Authority. Following deliberations as a result of his
two-day preliminary hearing this week, the HRA informed Winston that he will face charges at the January hearing, along with fellow jockeys Robbie
Fitzpatrick, Fran Ferris and former rider Luke Fletcher,
plus five Betfair account holders. The charges relate to
a security department investigation surrounding 37
races between June 2003 and February 2004.
