ONE COMMUNITY, ONE WELLSPAN 2012 Annual Report Our Mission Gettysburg Hospital Foundation is a community-based, not-for-profit corporation which exists to inspire gifts and grants from individuals, foundations, corporations and other entities to support the health and well-being of people in Adams County, PA, and communities in adjacent northern Maryland. wellspan health Mission Working as one to improve health through exceptional care for all, lifelong wellness and healthy communities. A letter From the chair W e live in a community that honors and celebrates history. It is because of generous donors that the Gettysburg Hospital Foundation has developed a rich history of philanthropy in our community. Our donors contribute because they truly believe in our mission and want to continue our proud legacy. The Gettysburg Hospital Foundation has a mission of inspiring gifts to support the health and well-being of people in Adams County and communities in adjacent northern Maryland. Each individual, foundation or corporation listed in this report has supported our community over the past year. Without our donors we would not be able to fund the many WellSpan Health charitable initiatives that impact members of the community, and our friends and families. In this report you will also learn about a few of the people and programs that are an integral part of the Gettysburg Hospital Foundation. Being a part of the foundation has allowed me to meet many of these individuals and see donors’ support come to life. I am truly honored to serve as chair of a foundation with such a great mission. Saying “thank you” cannot mean enough when it comes to acknowledging donors’ support. Donors impact the lives of many in our community, especially those who are in greatest need. On behalf of all those who have benefited from a donation, a volunteer’s time or a staff member’s dedication, I need to thank you. I am certain that with the continued support of community members we will continue a rich and wonderful history of helping each other. Daniel M. Bringman Chair, Board of Directors One Community, One WellSpan 3 a focus on Hope, healing and hospitality Jane Hyde, President WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital 4 Gettysburg Hospital Foundation Annual Report W ellSpan Gettysburg Hospital has received numerous awards and recognitions for its medical care, including three VHA Mid-Atlantic APEX Awards for excellence in patient care, an “A grade” rating for The Leapfrog Group’s Hospital Safety Score and a Top Performer rating from the Joint Commission on Key Quality Measures. But as everyone knows, awards and recognitions don’t sit at your bedside to explain a complicated medical procedure. Or offer a reassuring word when your child is in the Emergency Department. Or flash you a smile and a friendly “hello” when you walk through the door. “WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital has spent the last decade very focused on ensuring that it provides the highest level of quality care, and the awards we have won demonstrate the success of those efforts,” says Jane Hyde, who serves as president of the hospital and a senior vice president of WellSpan Health. “But what makes the hospital a very special place is the commitment our physicians and employees have to our patients. We are an organization that is very focused on hope, healing and hospitality.” In recent years, WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital has taken a number of steps to improve the patient experience for both inpatients and outpatients. The hospital’s new Emergency Department features all private treatment rooms. New menus provide greater food choices. Nurses and doctors “round” more often on patients to keep them informed about their care. A harpist regularly plays in the lobby and ICU. And efforts to reduce noise on regular patient floors have been implemented. “We have also added ‘huddles’ to our daily routine,” says Hyde. “For 20 minutes each day, staff members on each hospital unit ‘huddle’ to share information and discuss any concerns or issues they may have. It’s a great way for everyone to get on the same page and work as a team. Information from these unit huddles then filters up to a daily leadership huddle. This type of communication allows us to react very quickly to any issues that may arise.” Assisting WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital in its patient experience efforts is a 10-person advisory council made up of past or current patients and family members. The council meets every other month and provides hospital leaders with a “sounding board” for what is working and what can be improved. All of these efforts are paying off. Teams have been focusing on multiple areas of improvement and, in recent years, have successfully increased patients’ perceptions of the facility’s cleanliness by nearly 10 percent while bumping the “would recommend” scores (on patient satisfaction surveys) by the same percentage. “A great patient experience goes hand-in-hand with high-quality care,” says Hyde. “WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital is a very welcoming organization, and there is a lot of pride here. We want to ensure that patients and families have the best experience possible.” One Community, One WellSpan 5 One retiree’s desire to give back Betty Fair, donor and former WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital employee 6 Gettysburg Hospital Foundation Annual Report B etty Fair spent the final nine years of her career working as a patient financial counselor for WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital before retiring two years ago. Together with her husband, a custodian in the public school system, they raised two children and diligently saved for retirement. But it wasn’t their hard-earned nest egg that inspired Mrs. Fair to make a planned gift to the Gettysburg Hospital Foundation—it was simply a desire to give back to a community that had given so much to her and her family. “You don’t have to be rich to give,” says Mrs. Fair. “We’re certainly not. I assigned a small portion of my life insurance to the foundation. I feel a relationship with the hospital, and I want that relationship to continue even after I’m gone. I trust they will put the gift toward whatever is needed most at the time and will invest wisely. Giving can come from any income level. No gift is too small.” In her role as a patient financial counselor, Mrs. Fair met many people who struggled to make ends meet while facing a challenging diagnosis or a long course of treatment. On many occasions, she witnessed the Gettysburg Hospital Foundation help patients buy groceries or pay for prescriptions. “I could’ve been the one sitting in that chair needing those things,” Mrs. Fair reflects. “It’s about connecting people to the resources they need, and I wanted to be a part of that.” Philanthropy and volunteering have been central to Mrs. Fair’s life. She served as chair of the hospital’s United Way campaign for many years, participated in the hospital’s employee giving campaign and was involved in other fundraising projects at previous jobs. Today, her focus has turned to enjoying her two young grandchildren and her knitting—though she says she might return to volunteering when the grandkids start school. Mrs. Fair says she is reminded of the impact giving can have every time she sits outside in the hospital’s courtyard, which is lined with picnic tables made possible by employee donations. “It’s such a lovely space in the spring and summer,” she says. “It shows how giving benefits everyone and that gifts can last a long time.” One Community, One WellSpan 7 a caring environment for our most vulnerable neighbors William J. Steinour, MD, medical director of the WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital Emergency Department Jennifer McNew, RN, forensic nurse supervisor at WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital 8 Gettysburg Hospital Foundation Annual Report W hen it comes to handling some of the most sensitive cases in the Emergency Department, Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner (SAFE) nurses are the ones best prepared to help. At WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital, 11 forensic nurses care for victims of domestic violence, elder abuse, child abuse and sexual assault. Each SAFE nurse is specially trained in forensic photography, injury documentation, evidence collection, getting a detailed history and treating assault victims. To support this important work, the Gettysburg Hospital Foundation provided funding to supply the Adams County Children’s Advocacy Center with a forensic nurse in 2012. “What we do isn’t part of standard emergency medicine training, so the ED staff relies on us when these types of patients arrive,” says Jennifer McNew, RN, a forensic nurse team supervisor at WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital. “The ED is skilled in clinical evaluation and treatment, but the SAFE nurses go beyond that. We know what to look for, what kinds of questions to ask and the types of injuries that are consistent with sexual assault or domestic violence. We also work closely with a multi-disciplinary team that includes law enforcement, the Adams County Children and Youth Services and the district attorney’s office, and we may be called to testify in court.” Recent renovations to the WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital Emergency Department make it easier for the SAFE nurses to do their jobs. The new department offers added privacy so patients will be more comfortable answering questions about difficult topics. The SAFE nurses also have more room to securely store evidence, camera equipment and documentation. “We tripled the size of the department,” says William J. Steinour, MD, medical director of the WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital Emergency Department. “That has led to improved quality of care and patient safety, a better patient experience and an increase in patient volume—from 27,000 visits annually to 30,000 visits during the first year in the remodeled facility. Donor support assisted in the recent renovations. “Patients, including victims of assault, are cared for in more comfortable private rooms behind closed doors,” he continues. According to Dr. Steinour, the renovations were meant to increase efficiency and improve patient comfort. “The idea is to not add to the stress of the patient as he or she is receiving care,” he says. “Privacy helps with that. Now, the patient’s health information isn’t being echoed down the halls, but is instead being discussed behind closed doors. The new department puts the focus on the patient.” One Community, One WellSpan 9 would You like to get More Involved?
