Have the students complete an open sort contrasting the short e, long ē
(ee), long ē (ea), and short ĕ (ea), words. Upon completion of the sort,
emphasize the key points described below. Although this sort was designed
to be an open sort, you may choose to add headers. You may also choose to
direct students to sort by sound, pattern, or sound and pattern.
7.1 – Easiest word list (Recommended for primary)
7.2- Average word list (Recommended for late primary /remedial intermediate)
7.3- Challenge word list (Recommended for intermediate)
Key Points:
 short e – one vowel signals the short vowel sound- Closed syllable(CVC)
 ee long ē sound (Review when two vowels go walking, the first
one does the talking) (CVVC)
 ea long ē sound (Discuss the new vowel pattern that follows the
same rule as ee). (CVVC)
Introduce the concept that ea can be long or short.
 eashort ē sound
Exceptions (oddballs)-read- Read may be pronounced with either a long e or short e sound.
steak- ea may also have a long ā sound.
