Swiggum, Associated Training Services

Safety Instructor
...............................................................................................................
Tuesday, February 7
NESC New Code Updates for 2017
This session is essential for all levels of utility engineering and operations personnel to ensure their knowledge of the latest safety code
requirements. We will be learning major changes in grounding requirements, supply station rules, clearances of overhead lines, loading and
strength of overhead lines, underground line rules, and work rules. - Randy Larson, CVTC Job Training and Safety Instructor
Appropriate Use of Rubber PPE
So many linemen can misunderstand rubber goods protection. Some PPE is for direct (body) contact, such as rubber gloves, but is a rubber
hose appropriate for direct contact? Is a pole guard rated for direct contact? How about hard cover-up? This session will clarify which rubber
goods are for direct or brush contact only. -Terry Ward, Sales, Hubbell Power Systems
Inspection for Digging Equipment
There are numerous safety measures that should be taken before the trencher chain or plow first touches the earth. After surveying and
visually inspecting the job site, you should complete a thorough examination of your trencher’s engine, hydraulics, belts, and tracks. - Derek
Olson, Territory Manager at LF George Inc.
Social Media Etiquette 101
Using social media has become a part of our everyday lives. You can maintain relationships through outlets such as Twitter and Facebook.
91% of employers use social media to screen applicants. When you post a comment on Facebook or send out a tweet, it’s not something
that just disappears after your conversation has ended. Your social life may not be as private as you think. Learn tips on how to use social
media in an appropriate way. -Laurie Boettcher, MSC, CVTC Digital Marketing Instructor
Properly Fitting Safety Footwear
If the shoe fits, you may not what to wear it. Learn why it is important to fit a shoe, using a foot measuring device, not just size it. Learn
about “last” and how that “last” affects the shoe’s fit. Hytest Safety Footwear will show you how sizing can save your feet and how proper
fit saves you from back pain. -Hytest Safety Footwear
Irate Customer Relations
Utility workers interact with the public and it can be hard to keep your cool when dealing with difficult customers. It is probably not
appropriate to get defensive and fight back or cave in and give customers whatever they demand. Handling angry customers can be one of
the most challenging aspects of a job. Whether they confront you face-to-face, or you speak with them over the phone, chances are you are
going to be met with frustration, aggressive anger, and little patience. This session will give you direction on how to successfully manage an
angry customer. - Judi Anibas, CVTC Personal Safety Trainer
LED Lighting
Every day, people wake up, and they go about their days to places where they work, learn and live, never thinking about the lighting that
illuminates the environments where they spend so much of their time. Have you ever thought about LED lighting? This is your chance to learn
what is new, why it is so bright, and if it really is more efficient. -Alan Reibe, Border States Electric
Cable Construction and Tips
This session will concentrate on explaining the critical components of URD cable including: conductor types, strand screen, snsulation(s) EPR &
TR-XLPE, insulation screens, shielding, jackets, cable preparation, and handling. - Eric Thoreson, Okonite
District Manager
Encountering Illegal Drugs
Drugs are chemicals that change the way a person’s body works. Learn what you might see if someone is using illegal drugs and the
importance of being able to recognize this, especially on the job site. Get tips for staying safe when encountering a person under the influence.
(2 hour session) - Jed Sperry, Retired Special Agent Dept. of Criminal Investigation (DCI)
Move Over and Slow Down
More than 150 U.S. law enforcement officers have been killed since 1999 after being struck by vehicles along America’s highways, according
to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. To lower that deadly toll, a new coalition of traffic safety and law enforcement groups
is launching a nationwide public awareness campaign to protect emergency personnel along our nation’s roadsides. Be aware of how you can
keep yourself more safe along a roadway.
AMI Metering
Learn about what is new in the metering industry. - Jim Murray, Irby - Landis & Gyr
Roundtable Session - What is Working and Not Working in Your Field of Line Work?
At the request of past year’s attendees we are offering a round table discussion to learn from each other what you are experiencing on the
job. When you register, there is an opportunity to submit questions, comments, and concerns to be used as discussion points. These will be
presented anonymously, unless you request otherwise.
