CHILLICOTHE Elementary Edition Volume 1, Issue 1 SEPTEMBER 5, 2012 Editor: Maddi Huse The Principal’s Posting We have had a very successful beginning for the new school year. I want to thank all the parents who attended Meet the Teacher and the Title One meeting, and also waited patiently in line for school supplies. This took longer than we anticipated, but we are already working on ideas to improve this for next year. The students of Chillicothe Elementary are to be commended for their good behavior and attendance the first week of school. I am so proud to be the principal of such a fine group of students. There will be a PTCO meeting on September 6th at 6:00 to discuss setting a date for the Fall Festival and planning the booths and activities. Please make every effort to attend so we can work together to make this a successful event. On September 12th at 9 a.m., we have authors, Dave and Pat Sargent visiting our school. They will do a presentation and will have their books for sale. You should be receiving a flyer with more information about this soon. We have lots more planned for this year, and will be letting you know of events and time in future newsletters and notes. Please check your child’s folder for all communication being sent home. I am still in the process of getting to know all of you, so if you visit the school, please stop by my office, introduce yourself and say hello. We have gotten a few new books, and we will be visited by two very talented authors, Dave and Pat Sargent. I think this first week in library has been very successful and I hope you have thought the same thing. I would like to thank you all for trying your best in library and I hope you will continue to work hard! Mrs. Baird’s Kindergarten By: Chloe Propst This week the wonderful kindergarteners have learned a high frequency word and are reviewing their ABC’S! Now they are learning something important, classroom rules. Also, they have learned how to go to through the lunch line, and their lunch numbers. Next week the kindergarten class will learn a new high frequency word! Can you guess what that word is? It is the word “can”! How smart are they? I hope that they have a year full of learning and lots of fun! Ms. Riley’s Second Grade By: Maddox Flores Last week the excited second graders all made a 100 on their spelling test! WooHoo! They also had a great first week of school and they learned their rules quickly. Some of them went on exciting vacations this summer, Weslie Daniel went to Disneyland and saw the cars, Katy Huse went to St. Croix. Yay for the second graders! Great job! FOURTH GRADE By: Logan Pulis Fourth grade is doing a lot of science and social studies. They are learning about the Presidents and the Candidates. In math, they are learning about place value, expanded notation, and math facts. The fourth graders are all learning the rules and about switching classes but I think they are doing amazing! Fourth graders are all smiles about learning! Page 2 Mrs. Harris’ First Grade By: Ben Brown This year Mrs.Harris says that the first grade class is doing a good job on their spelling and fluency. Mrs.Harris likes this class and thinks they are very smart and fun. She also says that Mrs.Baird did a good job teaching them. On their first spelling and fluency tests they did awesome! I am pretty sure the first grade class likes Mrs.Harris. The first graders are doing great! I think Mrs.Harris knows that they are going to be ready for next year! Mrs. Norman’s Third Grade By: Emma Norman The third graders were shocked and excited when they found out that Mrs. Norman was their teacher again this year, but they didn't mind. The students were working hard, but also are having fun learning. In Social Studies, the kids are studying and making maps. Guess what they made a map about? Our very own playground! In science they have been working in their science notebooks and have been learning the rules for science. They are also reading a great book called the Return of the Indian. Keep up all the hard work third grade! Fifth Grade: By: Armando Granados Ms. Jones’ 5th grade class has had a very good year so far. Fifth grade is going to start studying their reading books this week. Ms. Jones is expecting a very good year with 5th grade. In math with Mrs. Goins, fifth grade is learning many new things including, decimals, place value, and ordering numbers. Fifth grade is having a great time this year! Sixth Grade By: Sam Selves This year Mrs. Goins says that the 6th graders are doing fantastic already! The 6th grade is very excited to be doing the newspaper this year. In math we are learning about equivalent fractions. We are also learning how to turn decimals into fractions, and fractions into decimals. We are loving math! In ELA (English Language Arts) we are reading a lot. We love reading and we are very good at spelling. We play a game that's called "Sparkle." It's a game where you basically just spell a word and if you spell it wrong you are out, but that is ok, this class is fun to be in! In Social Studies we are learning about the cultures, major cities, capitals, countries, and states, we are also enjoying this class. For science we are learning about the periodic table, matter, atoms, and how to use proper clothing and equipment. This class is very good like all the others! We are having a wonderful time in 6th grade. Good job everybody! RIDDLE By: Miranda Hagaman What is black and white and read all over? a newspaper Volume 1, Issue 1 Page 3 Sept. Homework helps or Parent Connections here By: Melania Correa Parents and students: Here are some websites that will help out with reading, math, science, social studies and so much more. You can play games based on your grade level, and there are even stories you can read. Some of these websites even help you with your homework!
