Students will do actual sound recording in our state-of-the-art audio recording studios using Pro Tools. Principles of recording and mixing music as a group and individually will be the primary focus of this workshop. Students will receive an introduction to microphone principles, audio recording techniques as well as some ADR sessions to replace dialog, building of sound FX, creating Foley effects, and creating music to enhance a movie scene. The focus will also be on listening skills, coupled with hands-on-learning. The students will have the ability to develop their own engineering style of professional recording. Students in this workshop may record live sound of students in the summer guitar program or record some of the writings of students in the Young Writer’s Workshop. Instructor: Professor Grace Lee, Assistant Professor in the Audio Recording Department. She has scored, produced and engineered soundtracks for music festivals, radio broadcasting studios and rock bands. BROADCASTING FOR RADIO AND TV GRADES 9 - 12 • JuLY 5 – 28 • 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM Whether you want to pursue a career in live television, radio broadcasting, or just want to explore an amazing craft, this workshop is for you. This intensive hands-on program offers each student the chance to use latest industry standard equipment, use brand new on-air and production studios, and a chance to learn from professionals in the New York area. Students will explore the techniques involved in creating multi-camera shoots and radio programs for news, sports and entertainment broadcast genres. Some of the following equipment used will be SONY camera set-ups, Tricaster Production Switchers, 3 Play Instant replay/Playback Media server, Jimmy Jib Remote camera cranes, as well as Adobe Audition audio editing software. Join us and work behind the scenes at a broadcast facility and WFTU Radio 1570 AM. Learn to write a script, voice a commercial, capture footage, edit a package, be on-camera and be exposed to social media and its effect on the industry. Students in this program may broadcast basketball games, summer guitar ensembles or original writings from students in our Young Writer’s Workshop. Instructor: Michael Quick is a talented sports announcer with over 22 years of experience. He is a long time host and producer for MSG variety network. He is considered the high school sports guru for New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, hosting such shows as “A Quick: 60” and “Quick Hits.” Mike spent time with MSG Varsity and most recently he was on the call for the 9th Annual SNY High School Basketball Invitational Tournament. He is known as the “The Dean of New York High School Sports” just based off of his encyclopedia-like knowledge of the local high school athletic programs.He has scored, produced and engineered soundtracks for movies, TV, and theatrical productions. 2 GUITAR WORKSHOP GRADES 8 - 12 • JuLY 5 – 28 • 9:00 AM – 11:45 am The Guitar Workshop will provide students with a diverse and exciting program of intensive guitar study. Each student will improve their musical technique, tone, musical reading, and performance ability. The program is for the serious guitar player. Emphasis will be on different styles of music including Jazz, Blues, Funk and Classic Rock. Students will work on developing their skills as both rhythm players and soloists. Electric and acoustic guitars are welcome. Topics that will be covered include fret-board knowledge, ear training, theory, sight reading, technique exercises (right and left hand), and both pick and finger style playing. No audition is required as all levels of experience, whether beginner, intermediate or advanced, will be accepted. At the conclusion of the program, students will perform as soloists or in an ensemble for their friends and family. Students from the summer Broadcasting and Audio Recording programs may record their performances as well. Instructor: Professor Tony Romano, Adjunct Music faculty. A professional guitarist for over 20 years, he has toured worldwide and performed and recorded with many notable artists. FILMMAKING GRADES 9 - 12 • JuLY 5 – 28 • 9:00 AM – 4:00 pm Students will have the opportunity to begin their film experience by using Cannon HD cameras and professional lighting equipment on the first day of their class. As part of this summer program, students will write their own short screen play, shoot their own movie, and edit all of their own footage in our state-of-art Mac Lab. Each day, students will have hands-on-experience while working as part of a small film crew, helping each other in the completion of their respective movies and projects. Students will also become familiar with character creation, scene development, and plot layout in the production of their film. Each student will develop a short film, where individual and small group work will be encouraged. Students will present their final film version on the last day of the program to their parents and friends. High school junior and seniors may wish to continue to take the intermediate and advanced filmmaking class, which will qualify them for a 3 credit film course — VID 122 -Television Workshop, for an additional fee. Instructor: Professor Dan Galiardi, member of the International Cinematographers Guild. His film credits include Batman Forever, Independence Day, Jungle2 Jungle and Law and Order. He has used various cameras including Panavision, Arriflex, Aaton, Moviecam and Photosonics. 3 INTERMEDIATE / ADVANCED FILMMAKING GRADES 10 - 12 • JuLY 30 – AUGUST 4 • 9:00 AM – 10:00 pm This one-week workshop will begin with students moving into the residence halls on Sunday afternoon and begin their first class on Sunday evening. The filmmaking activities will continue throughout the day and evening. Students will be able to sharpen their craft as an experienced filmmaker, with a hands-on approach using industry standard equipment, software, and techniques. Students will use The RED SCARLET DRAGON® camera, Canon EOS C100 Mark II Cinema cameras, professional sound sync audio recorders, and Arri/Kino Flo lighting equipment. Students will use a green screen, a Model 11 J.L. Fisher Dolly, and learn all the aspects of filmmaking from pre- to post-production. Editing will be done using state-of-the-art Apple iMac Computers and The Adobe Premiere CC. A short film will be produced, and students will learn all aspects of pre-production, including scripts, storyboarding, shot lists, and scheduling films. Each student will have an opportunity to create and direct his or her own film. Students will work in small groups to produce and complete a finished film in this hands-on program. Creativity, originality, and passion will be emphasized. High school juniors and seniors may receive 3 college credits in VID122 Television Workshop by taking this course, along with the first Filmmaking Workshop, for an additional fee. This course may be transferable to other colleges who may accept this course, or when you apply to Five Towns College. Instructor: Professor James Bock has taught at Framingham State University, The Art Institute of Charleston, and has written and directed a distributed feature length film including official selections in over 10 international Film Festivals. He has national credits as an actor from Doritos commercial to camera time with Chuck Norris on Walker Texas Ranger. 4 FIVE TOWNS COLLEGE HOSTS: ATHLETICS SUMMER BASKETBALL LEAGUE GRADES 9 - 12 • JUNE 27 – AUGUST 4 • 6:00 PM – 9:00 pm This six-week basketball program for high school boys and girls will feature high school basketball teams that will compete in league play at least once a week. Each team will consist of 8 to 10 players, and the games will be scheduled to play either on a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday evening. Each game will be officiated by a referee, and schedules will be developed once all teams have been registered. At the conclusion of league play, a championship game will be held at the College in August. High School Team registration must be done through the high school athletic coach, and no individual registrations will be accepted. BOYS & GIRLS BASKETBALL GRADES 3 - 9 • JuLY 24 – JULY 28 • 9:00 AM – 3:00 pm This one week basketball program for boys and girls will focus on instructional components where players of all abilities will refine their basketball skills in shooting, rebounding, offensive and defensive moves and team play. A variety of drills will be developed with each of the participant, both individually and also with team exercises. Tee-shirt, lunch and awards are included in the program. A certified trainer will be on site all week and after hour training is available. It’s Time to Audition for Your Summer Stock Experience! Students in grades 10 through 12 will have the opportunity to perform in a series of plays while learning many different theatre skills in an all-day program taught by our award-winning theatre faculty and staff. A variety of different theatrical workshops will be offered that include acting, singing and dancing, which will prepare each student to perform in these theatre productions. Students will be cast in one or both play productions. Students interested in technical theatre will also enjoy this experience. The plays that will be offered are The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and Our Town . Auditions will be held at the College on Saturday, April 22 from 10:30 AM to 1 PM as well as Monday, April 24 at 4:30 PM. At this time, you will meet the theatre faculty as well. It is recommended that you be prepared to do a reading or monologue; as well as sing, if you are a vocalist. Students who miss this audition date should call the College to schedule for the next audition date, if offered. All plays and workshops will be conducted on the College campus, using our dance studio and the main stage theatre. At the conclusion of the program, friends and family can purchase a ticket to attend these summer stock performances. All students cast in these plays will also earn one college credit in play production. (THE 151) Instructor: Professor Milton Justice, Academy Award Winner, is known for his HBO documentary film, Down and Out in America. He has also received an Emmy Award for Nobody’s Child and has done extensive theatrical performances and productions throughout the world. YOUNG WRITER'S WORKSHOP GRADES 6 - 9 • JuLY 5 – JULY 28 • 9:00 AM – 4:00 pm This workshop will teach participants to use strategies to invent, develop, and revise material using the writer’s most essential tools – language, imagination, craft, sight, and insight. Students will have the opportunity to participate in instructor-led peer workshops focusing on some exceptional modern works in order to become more astute readers. Students will explore many various aspects of writing including fiction, creative non-fiction, screen and playwriting as well as poetry. Different writing styles will be explored through genres such as science-fiction, myth, folklore and fairytale, drama, and memoir. No experience is necessary to be a part of this exciting workshop, which will expand your imagination, creativity, and thought process. To culminate this exciting workshop, students will have the opportunity to perform their work with and for their peers in order to give relevance and importance to their writing in an Open Mic performance. Instructor: Professor Kristen Hoffman, Director of the College Writing Program, is noted for her work with Nickelodeon, Amazon, iTunes, MTV and is an award-winning writer. 6 2 FIVE TOWNS COLLEGE 2017 Summer PROGRAMS JULY 5 - JULY 28 & JULY 30 - AUGUST 4 GENERAL INFORMATION Students are invited to attend any of our summer programs. Each session is designed to provide the student with hands-on experiences in Music, Film, Audio Recording, Broadcasting, Writing, Theatre Arts, and Sports. APPLICATION PROCESS Complete the summer application form, and enclose your tuition deposit, which will be used towards the cost of the program selected. Please make the check out to FIVE TOWNS COLLEGE based on the following available program offerings: PROGRAMS AND TUITION HALF-DAY PROGRAMS: • Audio Recording Production • Guitar Workshop SPORTS PROGRAMS: A one-week basketball program is offered from July 24 to July 28 for boys & girls grades 3 to 9 for $300. High School students interested in an evening summer basketball league from June 27 to August 4 should contact their high school coach, so that the high school team can be registered with the College. TUITION DEADLINES Tuition for each of these half-day programs is $590 if you apply before April 15. Payment can be made in full or with a $350 deposit, which will be applied to the tuition. Final payment must be made by the deadline dates listed. Submit your application and check before April 15 for the most affordable tuition. Applications will be accepted until June 23. Payment may be made in full or with a $500 deposit, which will be applied to the tuition. Final payment must be made following the deadline dates listed. For an additional fee of $500, junior and seniors will receive a 3 credit college course in film, if both Filmmaking and Intermediate and Advanced Filmmaking are taken. TRANSPORTATION You are responsible for your own transportation to the College.
