What can a library system do for you more easily than one branch? Connect you to new people and
experiences! With eight branches to choose from--and one newsletter that informs you about all of them-patrons can easily pick and choose what tickles their
fancies. From baby story times to science fiction book
clubs, with the combined effort of all our
programming librarians, there's something for
everyone, and never too far away.
Here at the Gloucester Township branch, I know
many families who utilize multiple branches for extra
story times for their little ones. I've even been called
Miss Wendy (who runs programs for similiarly-aged
children at our Voorhees branch) on occasion! I
never take offense; I love that these children are
getting the socialization and stimulation they need.

But this is a topic even closer to my heart, because
my daughter met her best friend at a library--not the
one I work for, and not the one in the town where we
live, but another of our branches, the South County
branch, where librarian Diana Fults runs a manga
and anime club for the teens and tweens. My
daughter Tasha is a voracious reader who loves
Japanese culture and wanted to check the club out,
so I took her and she had a great time. She then
began attending the gaming night there as well. At
these programs, she made several friends, one of
whom is Harleigh, a middle schooler who shares
many of her interests. The two girls later went to a
gaming convention in Ohio together (pictured), and
had a great time learning new games and meeting
new people.

Tasha loves the library system, and not because
a walking TARDIS at the Origins Gaming Fair in
you'll often find her with an armful of books. "Going Columbus, OH
to a lot of different library activities means that I
can meet a lot of different people who I can
become close with," she told me when I talked to
her about writing this article. She now has friends all over the county. And although I pay the price driving
her from friend to friend and activity to activity--parents know exactly what I'm talking about here, and it's
an equation something like gas + time = exhausted mama--how can I bring myself to mind? Her world is
bigger because of the library. Parents, teachers, and librarians like to talk about how books expand your
world, but library programs do too. I'm so happy to be part of a system, not just as a librarian who has all
the support she could ever want, but as a parent, who sees for her daughter more possibilities than she
ever dreamed.
