Martin Luther King, Jr. marched along with his supporters in order to protest against the discrimination that the
Black Americans were facing. All were arrested and put into jail because of this demonstration. Due to these
demonstrations, the Governing Administration of Birmingham city composes a letter in which they appeal to the
black people to stop their act of violence. This letter appeared in the Birmingham Newspaper. In response, Martin
Luther King, Jr. drafted a document to the white merchants of American Administration to remove the racial
prejudice that prevails upon Black Americans from its roots, which would mark the turning point of the Civil Rights
movement and provide enduring inspiration to the struggle for racial equality.
Martin Luther King's “Letter from Birmingham Jail” aims the importance of non violence in order to stop the
frustrations which were growing in the minds of “Negro” (King). He urged to the white people to abolish all the
unjust laws that were the main cause for injustice against his community. In addition to this, he was utterly
disappointed due to the continuous refusal for negotiation from the leaders of Birmingham.
Martin Luther King explained their direct actions of non violence to create an atmosphere where they can
negotiate this situation of segregation and racial discrimination. He expressed concerns that if the emotions and
thoughts of “American Negro” (King) are not to be released in non-violent ways, then the result of this will lead to
violence. The purposes of these direct actions were not to create tension in the society, but to bring out the
painful experience of the Black Americans to the surface which was hidden in the American society from a long
