Pettit Mrs Linda Vallack, president of the contact group in Barnard C astle, welcomed Mr Bill Sellers, director of the Georgian Theatre Royal, Richmond, who gave a most interesting talk. He told first of how he became interested in theatres and the entertainm ent they provide. As a young man he joined a concert party. He later went to the BBC, taking part in the production of radio and TV programmes such as D ad’s Army and All Creatures Great and Small. On re tirin g he moved to Yorkshire. After a year he was asked to become director of the Georgian. It is the oldest, and only, performing theatre in its original form in England. It was b u ilt in 1788 and seated 400 people. Performances were given for two or three weeks each year when Richm ond Races were held. After a visit by the Prince of Wales, who later became King George III, royal was added to its name. It is still visited by royalty today. The theatre was closed for 100 years from 1838. In 1994 re s to ra tio n work began and some money for this was received from Europe and the lottery, the rest being given or raised by local people. Now there are only 200 seats and perform ances a rc h eld betw een | April and December. Often the sale of tickets does not cover the cost of a show. Behind the theatre is a muse um and there are guided tours of both from Easter until October. The theatre, which is run by vol untary staff, relies on tourists as well as locals to provide income. Mr Sellers is pleased to welcome any visitors or groups of people. After Mrs Vallack gave a vote of th a n k s cakes and produce w ere sold and su b sc rip tio n s were received.
