SEG Student Chapter ETH Zürich September 2016 2015‐2016 Annual Report—SEG Student Chapter Zürich Committee: Jakub Sliwinski, Treasurer; Alina Fiedrich, Secretary; Nico Küter, President; Juliana Troch, Vice President Regular Meetings and Promotion As always, the Student Chapter in Zürich maintains an active presence at the University and on the web, organizing chapter meetings every few months for the purpose of planning field excursions and announcing upcoming events such as lectures, courses and social events. Our Facebook page is regularly updated with news pertaining to new PhD positions, as well as SEG scholarships and short courses organized through other SEG chapters. Additionally, we advertise our group in beginning masters courses in an attempt to increase our membership and ensure the long term growth and activity of our student chapter. Webpage: http://seg‐students‐ethz.webs.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/segstudentchapterzurich/ This year, many of the regular meetings involved organizational work for the excursion to Ireland (see associated Field Trip Guide and Field Trip Report), although we have been experimenting with different activities, including geologically‐themed movie nights (in particular documentaries that tackle difficult issues associated with mining and industry, and how to manage the industry in a socially and environmentally conscious way). Activities SEG Ski Weekend: Our yearly tradition is to organize a ski weekend with the SEG Chapter in Geneva. This year’s SEG ski weekend (organized by UniGe) was located in Gstaad in the Berner Oberland (11‐13 March) and drew a relatively small but cozy group of 5 participants. SEG Student Chapter ETH Zürich September 2016 Raman Spectroscopy Course in Leoben Four students from ETH travelled to Leoben and participated in a Raman Spectroscopy course organized by the student chapter there on 12‐15 April. While there, students took part in practical exercises and learned the theory and application of this non‐destructive analytical technique. While there, discussions were held regarding future collaborations between the two chapters, which may manifest itself as a workshop in the near future. Lunch with sponsor SEG Zurich’s corporate sponsor, Michael Steinmann (CEO, Panamerican Silver Corp.) joined us once again on April 21 for a quick lunch and talk about employment, exploration, industry, mining economics and the life of a geologist outside of academia (particularly one who had spent so much time in academia, having previously earned a PhD). Many members (and a few non‐members) joined us and participated in a lively discussion over lunch. Industry talk: Max Mandl + SEG Movie Night Former SEG Zurich Vice President Max Mandl gave a quick talk on May 19th about his experiences working for a Uranium exploration company in Poison Bay, Wyoming. Key points in the talk stressed the unique geology of uranium deposits as well as the benefits and downsides of working for a small company. This evening also featured a screening of the film “Red Gold,” which tackled the controversy surrounding the development of the Pebble Au‐Cu‐Mo Project in Bristol Bay, Alaska. Following this was a discussion with members about the interaction of the mining industry with the environment and the issues that future geologists will have to tackle. SEG Student Chapter ETH Zürich September 2016 Metalor Metal Refining field trip One member of our student chapter took part in this excursion to Neuchatel, organized by Natalie Lefebvre on May 25. Ireland Excursion The highlight of this year’s activities was a 3‐chapter collaborative excursion exploring mining districts and ore deposits in Ireland (along with other geological and cultural oddities). This excursion took place between 9‐18 August, and drew 13 ETH members, 4 SEG members from the student chapter in Budapest, and 3+ members from Trinity College Dublin in their inaugural SEG activity. For more details, see associated field guide and field trip report. SEG Student Chapter ETH Zürich September 2016 Yearly SEG Gold Panning Weekend This year’s gold panning weekend took place in Val Platta/Disentis on 10‐11 September and drew 16 SEG members from Zurich, including 6 new masters students recruited during the ore deposits course. Although the amount of gold found on this excursion didn’t pay for gas (or indeed, anything at all), it provided an excellent way to meet new members and swap stories around a campfire.
