Culture is not only for Fridays!
Barbara Reichenbach
Many teachers devote one day a week to a cultural topic, often Friday, as a
culminating end of week activity. Culture should not be addressed as a
separate component of the language class, it should be viewed as an
essential part of the language learning experience. Cultural information can
be integrated into every lesson from vocabulary to grammar and beyond.
Learn from a veteran teacher how this can be accomplished.

How is culture a complex system?
Isabel Espinoza and Christopher Lemon
Departing from the assumption that culture would be better understood if we
discuss its characteristics or properties for the teaching languages purposes,
rather than trying to come up with a definition accepted by the field of
language teaching; in the following section, the characteristics of culture
under the scope of complexity theory will be exposed. In order to do this,
first complexity theory will be discussed, then following Larsen-Freeman’s
work (1997) where she applied this theoretical framework to describe
language and second language acquisition, we will apply complexity theory
to culture.

Increasing Your Students' Motivation to Read
Maria Zaldivar, Kimberly Talentino and Alvaro MarÃn
Pre-reading activities and collaborative learning promote reading
comprehension and student motivation during second language reading.
Among college students, working collaboratively during post-reading
activities did not affect motivation or comprehension, as determined by
answers to instructor generated questions or self-rating of comprehension.
But working collaboratively during pre-reading activities had a positive effect
on motivation.
