Famine of the 1840’s:
Ireland
• Fungus that only attacks potatoes
– Hits Europe and Ireland by 1845
• By 1846- complete failure of the potato crop
• By 1847 – 1 million dead, 1 million emigrated to
USA
• 1847-1855 – another 1 million emigrated
• 1848 Irish population = 8 million,
– 1855 Irish population = 5 million
– 2014 Irish population = 6 million (including Republic of
Ireland and Northern Ireland)
• Ireland never fully recovered
