Greater economic efficiency for tomorrow’s infrastructure The new Multitop ® manhole covers class D 400 in accordance with DIN EN 124 ACO Prerequisites governing innovations: ACO Foundry technology at its best The products are manufactured at ACO Guss’ foundries at Aarbergen and Kaiserslautern, the foundry centre of the ACO Group. All products undergo the most stringent quality controls, as well as controls performed externally by the Kaiserslautern test authority in accordance with the relevant standards in force. 2 The products are consistently the subject of further development under an intensive innovation and development process and are thus adapted to the continuously increasing traffic loads and changing building methods. ACO ACO Guss provide the optimum solution irrespective of materials Thanks to a high corrosion resistance, two materials have proved themselves in the drainage casting sector: Cast iron with lamella graphite (grey cast GG) EN-GJL as per DIN EN 1561 Cast iron with spheroidal graphite (nodular cast iron GGG) EN-GJS as per DIN EN 1563 Both materials are used wherever applicable. ACO’s foundries at Kaiserslautern and Aarbergen are in a position to manufacture and process both materials in an economic manner. 3D design programmes, computer-based foundry and load simulations ensure product development in accordance with the most recent state of the art. It is on this basis that we provide the optimum solution for every application. Load simulation by finite elements. Simulation of the casting and setting process. Smelting plant at the Kaiserslautern foundry. Material properties Cast iron with lamella graphite (grey cast GG) EN-GJL as per DIN EN 1561 Cast iron with spheroidal graphite (nodular cast iron GGG) EN-GJS as per DIN EN 1563 High corrosion resistance to waste water, melting agents and other environmental effects High corrosion resistance to waste water, melting agents and other environmental effects High resistance to pressure 600 to 1080 N/mm2 High resistance to pressure 700 to 1150 N/mm2 Optimum attenuation properties Moderate attenuation properties Tensile strength 100 to 350 N/mm2 High tensile strength 350 to 900 N/mm2 Low breaking elongation, low elastic deformation Large breaking elongation, large elastic deformation Thanks to these properties, grey cast is the ideal material for manhole cover frames and gully tops. Thanks to these properties, spheroidal graphite cast iron is the optimum material for manhole cover lids exposed to heavy loads and low weight gully tops. 3 Problems previously experienced with manhole covers during installation, handling and operation Gully tops and manhole covers are integral components of traffic surfaces and are therefore nowadays indispensable. Traffic safety calls for stringent regulations which have to be complied with by all drainage elements. What matters is not merely the static, but also the dynamic load generated by the traffic. Weight The traffic-safe seating of covers in frames is normally guaranteed by: heavy cover weight, about 90 kgs screw joints or locking devices hinges in conjunction with screw joints or locking devices All of these methods present drawback to the user and partly also increase maintenance expenditure. Handling Traffic safety by screwing/locking/hinge Increases maintenance expenditure. Wear Mortar joint Long-term operational experience shows in the case of manhole covers with attenuating inserts in the cover normally used considerable wear in the frame. High risk of operating errors. 4 Hinges are fixed points during installation. Covers should normally fold shut in the sense of the traffic. Step irons have to remain accessible to people and the cover may not impede access. This means: these points have to be borne in mind already when locating the manhole. In accordance with the accident prevention regulations in force, covers with hinges have to be locked in the open position. When closing, therefore, such a cover cannot simply be folded shut. In the case of standard covers with hinges, therefore, the whole of the weight of the cover has to be lifted in order to overcome the locking device. The open cover impedes maintenance work, for example the passage of rinsing hoses. Wear Another critical point is the mortar joint between the manhole cover and the manhole. As a result of the nowadays customary, slightly recessed installation of manhole covers to avoid damage to manhole covers and snow ploughs, the manhole cover, mortar joint and manhole are exposed to high impact loads. Consequence: destruction of the mortar joint and manhole head. On the left, a section through a new frame; on the right, section through a frame of identical type having been in operation for a number of Normal, recessed installation. years. Effects of wear: Cover make a rattling noise despite attenuating inserts Frames have to be replaced at regular intervals Impeding the traffic flow - TRAFFIC JAMS! High repair costs Typical appearance of a destroyed mortar joint. ACO Solution of the weight problem Light cover with maintenance-free, traffic-safe locking device for convenient operating and economic efficiency: Multitop ® Manhole covers Half the weight thanks to intelligent design Weight kgs 100,0 Manhole cover as per DIN 19584 Cover weight about 88.0 kgs 50,0 5 Manhole cover Multitop® as per DIN EN 124 Cover weight about 43.0 0,0 1976 kgs Weight saving in excess of 50 %! 2005 Time Solution of the handling and wear problem Major simplification of the operation and maintenance with the aid of: Screwless locking device in the cover 4 unlocking openings through which the cover can be opened. 6 Convenient operating using standard lifting tools thanks to low cover weight and screwless locking device. Insert the opening spanner into one of the 4 unlocking openings in the frame and unlock the cover by effecting a lever movement towards the outside. ACO Pull out the cover using the operating spanner at the lifting openings. Lock the cover by means of a vertical kick on the section of the cover protruding from the frame. The cushioning insert in the frame Wear cannot be avoided, but can be controlled. In the case of the Multitop® manhole covers, the cushioning insert is located in the frame, and not in the cover. This results in the contact surface of the cover being exposed to wear. . Covers are easier to replace than frames. No building sites, no traffic congestion, “no” costs. In view of the increasing traffic load, this assumes greater importance than ever before. 7 Maintenance-free and traffic-safe solution the intelligent solution without interfering hinge Maintenance-free, screwless, traffic-safe locking device made of highly wear proof plastic. Conforms 100 % to DIN EN 124 Temperature resistant Unaffected by dirt Self-securing Vandalism proof The locking mechanism of the cover of the Multitop® manhole cover is protected by special ribbing. Solution of the mortar joint problem The new Multitop ® Bituplan ® system capable of being rolled in The overwhelming majority of our roads are asphalted. Our experience and most recent results of investigations which we ordered to be carried out by the IKT Gelsenkirchen for this installation sector formed the basis of development of the new Multitop® Bituplan® manhole cover system. Its chief advantages Disconnecting the manhole and cover. No mortar joint in the system. Manhole relieved at the rate of up to 85 % (substantiated by the IKT Gelsenkirchen). 8 Multitop ® Bituplan ® system The answer to the mortar joint weakness NEW OLD Multitop ® Bituplan ® system Manhole cover DIN 19584 45∞ 85 % ACO 15 % 100 % Proven system The frame of the manhole cover can be used in an infinitely variable manner for building heights ranging from 160 to 220 mm. Normally fitted manhole covers of 160 mm frame height can thus be replaced without altering the manhole head. Minimising the overrolling noise The cover is not fitted directly on top of the manhole head, but rolled or vibrated into the road covering flush with the surface. This guarantees an absolutely flush installation without expensive additional measures. No more recesses in the road resulting in the generating of noise by traffic. The additional side effect: no jerk load, no shock like load on the manhole over and the construction below. Multitop® cast iron cover, EN-GJS, with ventilation openings/without ventilation openings. Standard lifting and operating spanners can be used. Cast iron frame, EN GJL, building height minimum 160 mm building height maximum 220 mm Rotation symmetrical frame without bulges. The frame can thus be inserted in any position. 9 Steel adaptor ring, matching manhole covers DIN 4034, parts 1 and 2, respectively DIN 4034 old! Straight outer wall for optimum adhesion of the surface covering. The object of the ribbed arrangement is to compact the lower structure and in addition acts to prevent distortion. Steel shuttering. Obvious product features at a glance The complete cover is removed and thus does not interfere with maintenance work. The use of standard lifting spanners is possible. Standard dirt traps pursuant to DIN 1221 fit all Multitop® covers. All Multitop® frames can be raised and can thus be adapted to the prevailing construction situation. Multitop® covers fit in a slide-proof manner the standard manhole cones and Adjustment rings pursuant to DIN 4034. Multitop® manhole covers can be turned in the radial direction when fitted. Step irons thus always remain accessible without any problem. No awkward compromises with regard to the contact surface of the frame: in the case of BEGU® and GGgrey cast frame, it is identical to the contact surface of frames pursuant to DIN 19584. 10 Multitop® manhole covers can also be supplied with coat-of-arms cover/ lettering in the frame when placing an order for 50 units. ACO In view of their building height, Multitop® manhole covers can be used wherever covers pursuant to DIN 19584 have been used up to now. Bracing at the manhole head for the purpose of level adjustment is no longer called for.
