The Long Hike My brother Roland and I wake up early this special Friday morning because we are so excited. Today is when our family leaves for our camping trip. Every year we go to Lake Herman in the mountains to camp and hike. The first year we went, I was only four years old, and I couldn’t do much. After three years of camping, I am old enough now to take the long hike along with everyone else, and I can’t wait! When we go camping, we take our tent, sleeping bags, flashlights, and food. As soon as Dad packs our van with all this gear, we’re on our way! We ride for two hours, and we reach the campground at last. At our campsite Mom and Dad set up the tent, and Roland and I help unpack. Then we all go down by the lake to watch the birds before lunch. We like seeing the woodpeckers and the many other colorful birds. After we have lunch, Dad says we should take our long hike to the top of the big hill. It is my first time to go along, and I really want to hike up that tall cliff. He says we will need to cross a wooden bridge to get there. After we hike for an hour, I can see a bridge ahead. As we get closer, I have to stop in surprise. I suddenly know I’m too afraid to cross it. The bridge is wide and strong, and it has railings. But it seems very high, and it goes over a stream. I don’t think I can do it. Now what? Roland and Dad hurry ahead of Mom and me. In the middle of the bridge, they stop and look back at us. Roland shouts, “Hurry up, you two!” But my feet just won’t move, and I feel very silly. Roland keeps teasing, and Mom asks me what’s wrong. I can’t answer. I can’t even look at her. I just look down at my stubborn feet. Then Mom nods and says, “It’s all right to be afraid.” Mom gives me a hug and tells me how she used to be afraid of the dark. For a long time she slept with a light on in her room, and then one night she simply turned it off. Mom learned the dark couldn’t scare her anymore. When Mom holds out her hand, I take it. We walk right across the bridge together. It really isn’t so bad. I just don’t look down. Instead I look ahead where Dad and Roland are waiting for us at the other end. Once across that scary bridge, we take the long hike up the big cliff. At the top we can see for miles and miles. The view is so beautiful! Mom says my smile is the biggest she has ever seen. I can tell that everyone is proud that I kept going, but no one feels as proud as I do. Choose the correct answer for each question. 1. Why does the girl find it hard to cross the bridge? A. B. C. D.
