CHOOSE AN ECO-FRIENDLY VENDOR
When looking at vendors, ask about and document their practices and any pertinent
certifications. Give preference to vendors who use sustainable production practices.
And, ask what you can do in your process to be more sustainable.

PRODUCTION RECOMMENDATIONS
» Be specific on ordering quantities.
» Estimate accurately to avoid waste.
» Do short runs on pieces that have
timely or ever-changing information.
» Reserve larger quantities for pieces
that are timeless.
» Remove dates on printed pieces when
possible to keep them more evergreen.
» Ask vendors if changes in your order
will reduce environmental impact (for
example: Is there a recycled option?;
Will a change in size reduce waste?).

CERTIFICATIONS
Industry certifications ensure that vendors follow certain sustainable
practices. Printers must be certified to use these logos; you may not add
them yourself. Common certifications include:

FSC CERTIFICATION
» There are three Forest Stewardship Council certifications,
including forest management, chain of custody, and
controlled wood. Each certification ensures forest
managers, manufacturers materials, and/or products
meet FSC Principles and Criteria.
Use local vendors whenever

both on transportation cost
and pollution, while also stimulating the local economy..

PRE- OR POST-CONSUMER RECYCLING?
There are two types of recycling. Pre-consumer recycling, when
manufacturing materials never reach the consumer, but are still
recycled. Post-consumer recycled materials have gone through the
market and are recycled into a product for consumers.
Paper and plastics are both produced through these methods. When
possible, we should order post-consumer recycled products with a high
percentage of recycled content.
