5 cm
20 cm
8 cm
The diagram shows a prism.
The cross-section of the prism is a trapezium.
The lengths of the parallel sides of the trapezium are 8cm and 6cm.
The distance between the parallel sides of the trapezium is 5cm.
The length of the prism is 20cm.
Work out the volume of the prism.
Student A Answer
Student B Answer
For Area of cross-section use
Volume = area of end x length
1
Area Trapezium = 2 (a +b)h
= 1 (6 + 8) x 5
2
=7x5
= 35
= 1 (6 x 8) x 5
2
= 1 x 14 x 5
2

2
= 35cm3
Volume = Area of cross-section x length
= 35 x 20
= 700cm3

xcm
The diagram shows a prism.
The prism is made from a cube of side xcm.
A hole of uniform cross-sectional area 8cm2 is cut through the cube.
Find, in terms of x, an expression for the volume of the prism.
Student A Answer
Student B Answer
Area of cross-section = x2 – 8
Volume of large cube = x x x x x = x3
Volume of prism
= x (x2 – 8)
Volume of hole = 8 x 8 x 8 = 512
= x3 – 8 x
Volume of prism = x3 – 512
