Donate and give more than just food.
The Hawaii Foodbank mission is simple: “to provide
food so that no one in our family goes hungry.” At the
Hawaii Foodbank, we have seen both success stories and
stories of struggle; and we experience the joy and pain
that accompany them.
Last year, the Hawaii Foodbank
helped to provide food assistance to
more than:
• 123,000 households
• encompassing 287,000 individuals
• nearly 48,000 keiki
• over 46,000 kupuna
Your Foodbank donations help many
others who may not know where
their next meal is coming from:
• Low-income families
• The homeless
• The working poor
• The disabled
• Veterans
• The unemployed and underemployed
• People recovering from drug, alcohol or domestic
abuse
You never know who you may come in contact with and
what his or her story is. Hawaii Foodbank employees are
no exception.
As employees, we get requests to speak at different
organizations. We have the opportunity to tell people
about our mission and the work we are doing in the
community, while encouraging them to get involved.
While out on one of these speaking engagements at an
elementary school in an affluent community, one of our
team members recalled her experience. She was asked to
speak to the individual classrooms about the Hawaii
Foodbank and how important it is to participate in the
Food Drive hosted by the
school.
During one of the classroom
visits with a group of second
graders, one of the students
raised his hand and asked “if
we don’t have enough food
at our house, do we still
have to donate?”
As you can imagine, this was
something the Hawaii
Foodbank staff member
never expected to hear and
quickly re-directed her talk.
She told the children about
the Aloha United Way 211
Program.
Aloha United Way 211 is Hawaii's only comprehensive,
statewide community information and referral service.
They offer help finding food, shelter, drug treatment,
childcare, job training and much more.
We received a call a couple weeks later from this young
boy’s teacher telling us that, not only did they have no
idea that this family was struggling, but they were able to
help the family get the help they needed.
For children like this young boy, the Foodbank is a
necessary part of life. His family was struggling and the
people around him were completely unaware.

goes hungry,” said Linda Chu Takayama,
board chair.
Prior to his appointment, Mr. Shintaku was
an integral part of the management team
at Kraft Foods nationally and locally for 27
years. During his tenure, he earned
leadership, management and achievement
excellence awards. His most recent
position was overseeing Kraft Foods sales
and marketing in Hawaii.
Since 1999, Mr.
Shintaku served on the
Hawaii Foodbank
board as a member,
secretary and most
recently, 2nd vice
chair. He also chaired
the product resourcing
committee, a
subcommittee of the
board responsible for
identifying new
sources of food and
cultivating
relationships with
existing donors.
Mr. Shintaku is an
alumnus of Pearl City High School and the
University of Hawaii at Manoa where he
earned a BBA, Accounting. He currently
lives in Honolulu with his wife and son.
Mr. Shintaku shared his thoughts on
joining the Foodbank as its newest
employee, “I’m excited to be moving into a
new chapter of my career; being able to
help the people of Hawaii and working
with a passionate team of individuals to
lead the fight against hunger.”

Letter Carriers place in your mail boxes during the

your bags with nonperishable food donations for
collection by Letter Carriers across Oahu. Our “Top Five
Most Needed” foods are: canned proteins, canned
meals, canned vegetables, canned fruits and rice. All

Hawaii Children’s Theatre
hosted its 4th Annual Food
Drive Day and encouraged
guests to bring a food
donation in exchange for
$1.00 admission. They collected 425 pounds of food and
$104.00 for the Hawaii Foodbank - Kauai Branch. We are
very grateful to Debra Blachowiak and all the staff and
cast of the Hawaii Children’s Theater for helping in our
mission to feed Kauai’s Hungry.

February 18, 2016 – The Kraft Heinz Foods Company and the
Hawaii Foodbank announced the results of the Kraft Check-Out
Hunger 2015 Campaign. From November 4, 2015 through January
20, 2016, retailers and their customers raised a record-breaking
total of $288,519.53 that will distribute over 721,000 meals to
help feed Hawaii's children, seniors and low-income families.

November 4, 2015 - Kraft and the Hawaii Foodbank kicked off its 23rd
Annual Check-Out Hunger holiday giving campaign. Stacy Cobb, Kraft

Stacy Cobb, Kraft Customer Business Lead was joined by store
representatives Carl Fukushima (Safeway Stores), and Tad Fujiwara
(Times Supermarkets | Big Save Markets) at the Hawaii Foodbank
warehouse to celebrate the campaign’s success. A check from all
participating stores was proudly presented to Gerald Shintaku,
President and CEO of the Hawaii Foodbank.
February 18, 2016 - Representatives from Kraft and their retail
partners presented a record-breaking check of $288,519.53 to
Hawaii Foodbank as a result of the Kraft Check-Out Hunger

come to an end where we don’t need a Check-Out Hunger campaign
anymore. Kraft and the people of Hawaii make that goal a possibility."

inexorable. Some of us hate
it and some of us embrace it.
C
One of the biggest changes for us at
the Hawaii Foodbank occurs at the
very top. Dick Grimm has moved on
from his position as President and
CeO, and we will miss him.
Dick is a good friend. He was
general manager of KGMB when I
first started out as a reporter. It
was during his tenure that our newsroom began the
partnership with the Foodbank that exists to this day.
When I left KGMB, he welcomed me on as a member of the
Hawaii Foodbank Board of Directors. I’ll forever be grateful for
his friendship and support.
Thank you, Dick. I miss you already.
But change is also a good thing when it means someone as
qualified and openhearted as Gerald Shintaku steps up. You
know that old saying—“he’s got some big shoes to fill?” Well,
Gerald doesn’t need to fill anyone else’s shoes. He’s got some
pretty BIG ones of his own. Gerald knows the food business
inside and out and has served as a Foodbank board member for
16 years. It’s only right that he assumes the leadership role.

Welcome, Gerald!
Gerald’s challenge is clear. He must deal with the changes that
have beset our working class families over the last couple of
decades. In many ways Hawaii has not weathered the years
gracefully.
The very first news report I did for the Hawaii Foodbank
focused on a young family living in a tent at Sandy Beach. It was
eye opening and heartbreaking to meet those kids and to see
the little community of tent dwellers.
Back then the sight of homeless families on various beaches was
still a relative rarity for most local people. We knew they existed
but – you know – out of sight, out of mind.
Today the homeless not only are in our sights, they are, sadly,
ubiquitous. That little clutch of tents I saw at Sandy Beach
decades ago has morphed into tent cities sprawling over
beaches, parks, sidewalks and whatever nook or cranny the
houseless can cram themselves into.
And now Hawaii, our land of beauty and aloha, our paradise, has
the highest rate of homeless people per capita in the United
States, according to federal statistics.
How the heck did we get here?
