Similes and Metaphors
A simile is a comparison between two things, using the words “like” or “as.”
Example: Her mind is like a sponge, absorbing all the details.
A simile is a type of imagery that makes a comparison between one thing and
another, to strengthen the ‘word picture’ in the readers mind. There are two
types of simile:
1. Where one thing is said to be like another, for instance:
“The sun looked like a golden coin in the sky.”
2. Where one thing is said to be as another, for instance:
“The moon shone as brightly as the stars.”

“…as cold as ice”
“…like a rolling stone”
“…whose fleece was white as snow”
“…like a bird up in the sky”
“…like a bird in a cage”
A metaphor is a comparison between two things, where one is said to be the
other.
Example: Her mind is a sponge that absorbs all the details.
Like a simile, a metaphor makes a comparison between one thing and another.
However, rather than saying that something is like another, a metaphor says it
actually is that thing without using the words “like” or “as.”
