Accordingly, in 1970 we decided to develop a large-print song book for Homes for the Aged, Elderly Persons' Centres, Senior Citizens' Clubs and other meeting places. We are grateful to the many residents, members and staff of Homes, Clubs and Centres whose recommendations and contributions have helped us compile a meaningful collection of songs for senior citizens in Ontario. It should be noted that only the lyrics are shown in this large-print song book. The music for this volume has been compiled by residents of Markhaven with the assistance of a New Horizons grant. It may be ordered directly from Markhaven, Markham, Ontario. In addition the Senior Citizens' Branch and Office on Aging of the Ministry of Community and Social Services financially supports all facilities operating under legislation administered by the Ministry to purchase original sheet music, song books, special vocal and musical arrangements for the programs and activities of Homes and Centres. Our sincere thanks to members of the Canadian Music Publishers' Association, the National Publishers' Association Incorporated and all the publishers who have allowed us to secure notices, and subsequently include their songs in Sing Out! Every reasonable care has been trace the ownership of copyright material included in this song book. Songs in the Public been noted. Music copyright taken to Domain have Since the first printing of the song book, several songs have been deleted because their copyrights could not be obtained; the numbering system has been retained to facilitate individuals using the original versions to follow along in their copies. We trust you will enjoy using Sing Out! All Time and Old Favourites in your Homes, Clubs and Centres. Lawrence Crawford Director Senior Citizens' Branch and Office on Aging I DREAM OF JEANIE WITH THE LIGHT BROWN HAIR I dream of Jeanie with the light brown hair, Borne like a vapor on the summer air; I see her tripping where the bright streams play, Happy as the daisies that dance on her way. Many were the wild notes her merry voice would pour, Many were the blithe birds that warbled them o'er; I dream of Jeanie with the light brown hair, Floating like a vapor on the soft summer air. I sighed for Jeanie but her light form strayed, Far from the fond hearts round her native glade; Her smiles have vanished and her sweet songs flown, Fitting like dreams that have cheered us and gone. Now the nodding wild flow'rs may wither on the shore, While her gentle fingers will cull them no more; I sigh for Jeanie with the light brown hair, Floating like a vapor on the soft summer air. GOOD-NIGHT, LADIES Good-night, Ladies! Good-night, Ladies! Good-night, Ladies! We're going to leave you now. Merrily we roll along, roll along, roll along, Merrily we roll along, o'er the deep blue sea. AURA LEE As the blackbird in the Spring, 'Neath the willow tree Sat and piped, I heard him sing, Singing Aura Lee CHORUS: Aura Lee, Aura Lee Maid with golden hair Sunshine came along with thee, And swallows in the air. On her check the rose was born; 'Twas music when she spake; In her eyes the rays of morn, With sudden splendor break. CHORUS: ALL THE NICE GIRLS LOVE A SAILOR All the nice girls love a sailor, All the nice girls love a tar; For there's something about a sailor Well, you know what sailors are! Bright and breezy, free and easy, He's the ladies' pride and joy Falls in love with Kate and Jane, Then he's off to sea again Ship Ahoy! Ship Ahoy! EASTER PARADE (Words & Music by Irving Berlin) In your Easter bonnet, With all the frills upon it, You'll be the grandest lady in the Easter Parade. I'll be all in clover: And when they look you over, I'll be the proudest fellow in the Easter Parade. On the avenue, Fifth Avenue; The photographers will snap us, And you'll find that you're in the rotogravure; I could write a sonnet, About your Easter bonnet, And of the girl I'm taking to the Easter Parade. WHEN YOU'RE SMILING When you're smiling, when you're smiling, The whole world smiles with you; When you're laughing, when you're laughing, The sun comes shining through; And when you're crying, you bring on the rain, So stop your crying, be happy again; Keep on smiling, 'cause when you're smiling The whole world smiles with you! IN THE SHADE OF THE OLD APPLE TREE In the shade of the old apple tree, Where the love in your eyes I could see, When the voice that I heard, Like the song of the bird, Seem'd to whisper sweet music to me; I could hear the dull buzz of the bee, In the blossoms as you said to me, With a heart that is true, I'll be waiting for you, In the shade of the old apple tree I WANT TO BE HAPPY I want to be happy, But I won't be happy Till I make you happy, too. Life's really worth living When we are mirth giving Why can't I give some to you? When skys are gray And you say you are blue. I'll send the sun smiling through, I want to be happy But I won't be happy Till I make you happy, too. SHINE ON HARVEST MOON Shine on, shine on harvest moon Up in the sky, I ain't had no lovin' Since January, February, June or July Snow time ain't no time to stay Outdoors and spoon, So shine on, shine on harvest moon, For me and my gal. SMILES There are smiles that make us happy, There are smiles that make us blue, There are smiles that steal away the teardrops As the sunshine steals away the dew: There are smiles that have a tender meaning, That the eyes of love alone may see, But the smiles that fill my life with sunshine Are the smiles that you give to me. YOU'RE THE CREAM IN MY COFFEE (Words and Music by: B. G. DeSylva, Lew Brown & Ray Henderson) You're the cream in my coffee, You're the salt in my stew. You will always be my necessity, I'd be lost without you. You're the starch in my collar, You're the lace in my shoe, You will always be my necessity, I'd be lost without you. Most men tell love-tales And each phrase dove-tails. You've heard each known way, This way is my own way. You're the sail of my love-boat, You're the captain and crew, You will always be my necessity I'd be lost without you. I'VE GOT A LUVERLY BUNCH OF COCONUTS I've got a luverly bunch of coconuts, There they are, a-standing in a row; Big ones, small ones, some as big as yer 'ead Give 'em a twist, a flick of the wrist, That's what the showman said. He said: I've got a luverly bunch of coconuts; Every ball I throw will make me rich There stands me wife, the idol of me life, Singing, Roll-a-bowl-a-ball-a-penny-a-pitch! Singing, Roll-a-bowl-a-ball-a-penny-a-pitch! Singing, Roll-a-bowl-a-ball-a-penny-a-pitch! Roll-a-bowl-a-ball! Roll-a-bowl-a-ball! Singing roll-a-bowl-a-ball-a-penny-a-pitch! FIVE FOOT TWO, EYES OF BLUE (HAS ANYBODY SEEN MY GAL) Five foot two, eyes of blue But oh, what those five foot could do, Has anybody seen my girl? Turned up nose, turned down hose, Never had no other beaus, Has anybody seen my girl? Now if you run into a five foot two, Covered with fur, Diamond rings and all those things, Bet-cha life it isn't her, But could she love, could she woo? Could she, could she could she coo? Has anybody seen my girl? BILLY BOY Oh, where have you been, Billy boy, Billy boy, Oh, where have you been, charming Billy? I have been to seek a wife, She's the joy of my life, She's a young thing and cannot leave her mother. Did she bid you to come in Billy boy, Billy boy, Did she bid you to come in, charming Billy? Yes. She bade me to come in There's a dimple on her chin, She's a young thing and cannot leave her mother. APRIL SHOWERS Though April showers may come your way, They bring the flowers that bloom in May, So if it's raining, have no regret, Because it isn't raining rain you know, It's raining violets And when you see clouds up on the hill, You soon will see crowds of daffodils, So keep on looking for a bluebird, And listening for his song, Whenever April showers come along. I'VE GOT SIXPENCE (Words and Music by Cox, Box and Hall) I've got sixpence, jolly, jolly sixpence, I've got sixpence to last me all my life. I've got tuppence to spend and tuppence to lend And tuppence to send home to my wife, poor wife. No cares have I to grieve me, No pretty little girls to deceive me. I'm happy as a king, believe me, As we go rolling, rolling home. Rolling home, (Rolling home) Rolling home, (Rolling home) By the light of the silvery moon. Happy is the day when a soldier gets his pay As we go rolling, rolling home. CLEMENTINE In a cavern, by a canyon, Excavating for a mine, Dwelt a miner, Forty-niner, And his daughter, Clementine. CHORUS: Oh, my darling, Oh, my darling, Oh, my darling Clementine, Thou are lost and gone forever, Dreadful sorry, Clementine. Light she was and like a fairy, And her shoes were number nine, Herring boxes without topses. Sandals were for Clementine. CHORUS: Drove her ducklings to the water Every morning just at nine, Stuck her foot against a splinter, Fell into the foaming brine. CHORUS: LILLI MARLENE by Hans Leip, Norbert Schultze and Tommie Conner Underneath the lantern by the barrack gate. Darling I remember the way you used to wait; "Twas there that you whispered tenderly, That you loved me, you'd always be, My Lilli of the Lamplight, My own Lilli Marlene. Time would come for roll call, Time for us to part. Darling I'd caress you and press you to my heart. And there 'neath that far off lantern light, I'd hold you tight, we'd kiss goodnight, My Lilli of the Lamplight, My own Lilli Marlene. Orders came for sailing, somewhere over there, All confined to barracks, was more than I could bear; I knew you were waiting in the street, I heard your feet, but could not meet; My Lilli of the Lamplight, My own Lilli Marlene. Resting in a billet just behind the line, Even tho' we're parted your lips are close to mine; You wait where that lantern softly gleams, Your sweet face seems to haunt my dreams, My Lilli of the Lamplight, My own Lilli Marlene. MOCKIN' BIRD HILL When the sun in the mornin' peeps over the hill, And kisses the roses' round my window sill; Then my heart fills with gladness when I hear the trill, Of the birds in the tree tops on Mockin' Bird Hill. CHORUS: Tra-la-la twittle-dee-dee-dee It gives me a thrill, To wake up in the mornin' to the Mockin' birds trill; Tra-la-la twittle-dee-dee-dee There's peace and goodwill, You're welcome as the flowers On Mockin' Bird Hill. Got a three-cornered plow and an acre to till, And a mule that I bought for a ten dollar bill; There's a tumble-down sliack and a rusty old mill, But it's my home sweet home up on Mockin' Bird Hill. CHORUS: When it's late in the evening, I climb up the hill, And survey my kingdom while everything's still: Only me and the sky and an old whip-poor-will, Sing-in' songs in the twilight on Mockin' Bird Hill. CHORUS: OH DEAR! WHAT CAN THE MATTER BE CHORUS: Oh dear! What can the matter be, Oh dear! What can the matter be, Oh dear! What can the matter be, Johnny's so long at the fair? He promised to buy me a beautiful faring, A gay bit of lace that the lassies are wearingHe promised he'd buy me a bunch of new ribbons To tie up my bonnie brown hair. CHORUS: He promised to buy me a basket of posies, A garland of lilies, a wreath of red roses, A little straw hat to set off the new ribbons That tie up my bonnie brown hair. IN A SHANTY IN OLD SHANTY TOWN It's only a shanty in old Shanty Town, The roof is so slanty it touches the ground: But my tumbled down shack by the old railroad track Like a millionaire's mansion is calling me back. I'd give up a palace if I were a king; It's more than a palace, it's my everything. There's a queen waiting there with a silvery crown In a shanty in old Shanty Town. GIMME A LITTLE KISS, WILL YA, HUH? Gimme a little kiss, Will ya, huh? What are ya gonna miss, Will ya, huh? Gosh! Oh, gee! Why do you refuse? I can't see what you've got to lose, Gimme a little squeeze, Will ya, huh? SILVER THREADS AMONG THE GOLD Darling I am growing old, Silver threads among the gold, Shine upon my brow to-day, Life is fading fast away, But my darling you will be, (will be) Always young and fair to me, Yes! My darling you will be, Always young and fair to me. CHORUS: Darling I am growing, growing old, Silver threads among the gold Shine upon my brow to-day: Life is fading fast away. MARCHING ALONG TOGETHER Marching along together Sharing ev'ry smile and tear. Marching along together, Whistling till the skies are clear. Swinging along the highway, Over the road that's wide, Without a bugle, without a drum We mean to chase the jinx. Oh rum-ti-diddle-di here we come, We're happy hinkey dinks. Marching along together, Life is wonderful, side by side. MARGIE My little Margie, I'm always thinking of you, Margie, I'll tell the world I love you; Don't forget your promise to me, I have bought a home and ring and everything, For Margie, you've been my inspiration, Days are never blue; After all is said and done, There is really only one, Oh! Margie, Margie, it's you. HOME SWEET HOME 'Mid pleasures and palaces though we may roam, Be it ever so humble, there's no place like home, A charm from the skies seems to hallow us there, Which seek thru' the world, is ne'er met with elsewhere. CHORUS: Home, home, sweet, sweet home, There's no place like home, There's no place like home. WHEN IT'S SPRINGTIME IN THE ROCKIES When it's springtime in the Rockies I'll be coming back to you. Little sweetheart of the mountains, With your bonnie eyes of blue. Once again I'll say I love you, While the birds sing all the day, When it's springtime in the Rockies In the Rockies far away. HARBOR LIGHTS (Words & Music by: Jimmy Kennedy & Hugh Williams) I saw the harbor lights, They only told me we were parting, The same old harbor lights, That once brought you to me. I watched the harbor lights, How could I help if tears were starting? Good-bye to tender nights Beside the silv'ry sea. I longed to hold you near And kiss you just once more, But you were on the ship And I was on the shore. Now I know lonely nights, For all the while my heart is whispering Will steal your love from me. TILL WE MEET AGAIN Smile the while you kiss me sad adieu, When the clouds roll by I'll come to you. Then the skies will seem more blue, Down in lovers lane, my dearie, Wedding bells will ring so merrily, Every tear will be a memory. So wait and pray each night for me, Till we meet again. THE MAN ON THE FLYING TRAPEZE Oh. once I was happy but now I'm forlorn, Just like an old coat that is tattered and torn, I'm left in this wild world to cry and to mourn, Betrayed by a maid in her teens. Ah, this girl that I loved, she was handsome and swell, And I tried all I knew her to please (her to please), But I never could please her one fraction so well As that man on the flying trapeze. Oh-h-h- CHORUS: He sails through the air with the greatest of ease, That daring young man on the flying trapeze; His manner is graceful, all girls he does please, And my love he has stolen away. THE BAND PLAYED ON Casey would waltz with a strawberry blonde, And the band played on, He'd glide 'cross the floor with the girl he adored, And the band played on. But his brain was so loaded it nearly exploded, The poor girl would shake with alarm. He'd ne'er leave the girl with the strawberry curl, And the band played on. THERE'S A LONG, LONG TRAIL There's a long, long trail a-winding, Into the land of my dreams, Where the nightingales are singing and a white moon beams. There's a long, long night of waiting, Until my dreams all come true, Till the day when I'll be going down That long, long trail with you. MEMORIES Memories, memories, dreams of love so true, O'er the sea of memories, I'm drifting back to you. Childhood days, wildwood days, Among the birds and bees You left me alone, but still you're my own In my beautiful memories. LOVE'S OLD SWEET SONG Once in the dear dead days beyond recall When on the world the mists began to fall, Out of the dreams that rose in happy throng, Low to our hearts, love sang an old sweet song; And in the dusk, where fell the firelight gleam, Softly it wove itself into our dream. CHORUS: Just a song at twilight, when the lights are low, And the flickering shadows softly come and go; Tho' the heart be weary, sad the day and long, Still to us at twilight comes love's old song Comes love's old sweet song. Even today we hear love's song of yore, Deep in our hearts it swells forever more Footsteps may falter weary grow the way, Still we can hear it at the close of day, So till the end, when life's dim shadows fall Love will be found the sweetest song of all. CHORUS: LET A SMILE BE YOUR UMBRELLA Just let a smile be your umbrella On a rainy, rainy day, And if your sweetie cries just tell her, That a smile will always pay. Whenever skies are gray Don't worry or fret, A smile will bring the sunshine And you'll never get wet. So let a smile be your umbrella On a rainy, rainy day. MEET ME IN ST. Just two of us together, We'll plan a honeymoon, Cruising down the river, On a Sunday afternoon. DRINK TO ME ONLY WITH THINE EYES Drink to me only with thine eyes. And I will pledge with mine, Or leave a kiss within the cup And I'll not ask for wine; The thirst that from the soul doth rise Doth ask a drink divine; But might I of love's nectar sip I would not change for thine. KEEP THE HOME FIRES BURNING (Music by: Ivor Novello Words by: Lena Guilbert Ford) Keep the home fires burning, While your hearts are yearning, Though your lads are far away They dream of home. I WONDER WHAT'S BECOME OF SALLY Old time pals and old time gals, Where are your smiles today? Friends of old with hearts of gold, Where have you drifted away? Where is Johnny and Mary, and all the rest? And where is the one I love best? CHORUS: I wonder what's become of Sally, That old gal of mine? The sunshine's missing from our alley, Ever since the day, Sally went away. No matter what she is, wherever she may be, If no one wants her now, please send her home to me. I'll always welcome back my Sally, That old gal of mine. DIXIE I wish I was in the land of cotton, Old times there are not forgotten, Look away! Look Away! Look Away! Dixie Land! CAROLINA IN THE MORNING Nothing could be finer, than to be in Carolina In the morning, No one could be sweeter, than my sweetie when I meet her In the morning , Where the morning glories twine around the door, Whispering pretty stories I long to hear once more. Strolling with my girlie, when the dew is pearly, early In the morning, Butterflies all flutter up, and kiss each little buttercup at dawning, If I had Aladdin"s lamp for only a day, I'd make a wish and here's what I'd say, Nothing could be finer than to be in Carolina In the morning. AIN'T WE GOT FUN Ev'ry mornin', ev'ry evenin', Ain't we got fun? Not much money, oh! but honey, Ain't we got fun? There's nothing surer The rich get rich and the poor get poorer In the meantime, in-between time Ain't we got fun? LET THE REST OF THE WORLD GO BY With someone like you, a pal good and true, I'd like to leave it all behind and go and find Some place that's known to God alone, Just a spot to call our own, We'll find perfect peace, Where joys never cease Out there beneath a kindly sky, We'll build a sweet little nest somewhere in the west And let the rest of the world go by.
