NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR
“Hail Malthus!”
Who is this Thomas Robert Malthus and when
does he make his appearance in Urinetown? And
why?
Underneath the satire and silliness of this play
(Jamie Lloyd, director of the 2015 London
production, said that “it must surely count as
one of the oddest musicals ever conceived,”
though he, too, loved it), there lie fundamentally
serious questions about sustainability, corporate
greed and the nature of rebellion. These are
issues that resonate strongly at this moment
in our history. In what some scientists call the
Anthropocene age of our planet (where humans
have become the predominant influence on the
environment)—an age in which, ironically and
dangerously, denials of science and its warnings
are all too prevalent—the play takes satiric stabs
at everyone, even its “heroes.”
I have loved this musical since I first saw it in
2003, because of the boldness of the questions
it asks, certainly, but even more so because of
the brilliance of its form—its wit, its sense of
humor about itself, and its biting, entirely
modern, no-holds-barred approach to what
Malthus first proposed in his Essay on the
Principles of Population in 1798.
An 18th-century essay on population. Hmm. As
Little Sally herself might have said: “Doesn’t that
sound like a great idea for some fun?” Welcome
to Urinetown, The Musical!
We dedicate this production of Urinetown to the memory of Reed Latrowski ’15.
Reed, we salute your indomitable spirit, your life and your love of the theater.
ABOUT THE CREATIVE TEAM
Jamie Horton director, before joining the
Dartmouth faculty as Associate Professor of
Theater in 2006, was a principal actor and
