Postal Food Drive Collects Over 20,000 Pounds
Of Food for the Hungry
Southington, CT (May 29, 2012) – On Saturday, May 12,
2012, the U.S. Postal Service conducted its Annual Food
Drive to collect non-perishable food items to assist in feeding
the hungry. Over 20,000 pounds of food was collected this
year. This food will be distributed equally to Bread for Life,
Southington Community Services, and the Giving Back
Program.
U.S. Postal Workers and United Way volunteers picked up the
donated food items and delivered them to the YMCA
Learning Center where volunteers helped to sort and box
food.
“In this volatile economic time, food donations are needed
more than ever,” stated Eldon Hafford, Executive Director of
Bread for Life. “The number of families receiving food from
the Community Food Pantry has tripled over the past year and
there has also been an increase in the number of individuals
coming to our lunch time program. The number of seniors
and shut-ins receiving meals from us is also continuing to
grow.”
Abigail Friend, 2012 Southington Little Miss
Sunshine, and Eldon Hafford, Executive Director
Bread for Life, help out at the 2012 Postal Food
Drive.
The three organizations benefitting from these donations
would like to extend their thanks to the U.S. Postal Workers, the United Way and all the volunteers who helped
to make this drive such a success. We would also like to thank YOU, the public, for your overwhelming
support, in recognizing the needs of others, and for continuing to be as generous as you can. With your help,
our work continues to see to it “that no one may go hungry”.
