Members: this is our annual tribute to our employers and we hope you’ll help celebrate by
inviting your employer to join us as a guest of CCPA! The program will include an engaging
talk (see below), lots of door prizes and other surprises, and we’ll give our annual Employer
of the Year Award. Please join fellow CCPA paralegals in saying THANKS to our employers!
Speaker topic: “The Burning Question about Nathan Hale”
Presenter: Walter W. Woodward, Connecticut State Historian
Today, many people know that there is some question about whether state hero Nathan Hale actually said the
words for which he is famous (“I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country”) at the time of his
hanging. A few also know that a recently discovered manuscript casts doubt on Hale’s truthfulness at the time
of his capture as a patriot spy on Long Island in the late summer of 1776. But was there a connection between
Hale and the great fire which nearly destroyed New York City the day before his capture? In this lecture, Walt
Woodward examines all these issues, and provides new insight into Hale’s life, death, and very real heroism.
About our speaker: Walter W. Woodward is the Connecticut State Historian and an
associate professor of Early American History at the University of Connecticut. He teaches
American Environmental History, Public History, Connecticut History, and an honors
American Studies Course focused on the Connecticut River. He is also an award-winning
author, columnist, co-editor of Common-place: The Journal of Early American Life, and
producer of “Grating the Nutmeg,” a podcast about Connecticut history and culture.
