• Elmer’s® products:
Foam board: 20”x30” white, navy blue & red
CraftBond™ Ultra-Stix All: Clear
• 12” metal ruler
• 12”x12” self-healing cutting mat
• Craft knife (with new blade)
• Painter’s opaque paint marker, medium tip, white
• 12”x12” cardstock: red • Cricut® Expression electric die cutting machine with Stand & Salute™ cartridge
• Foam mounting tape
• Pencil
• Scissors • Scrap copy paper • Paper towel
• Two large paper clips
DIRECTIONS:
1. Use pencil and X-Acto® 12” metal ruler to draw cutting lines on Elmer’s® 3/16” colored foam board:
Blue foam board – 10-3/4”x13”
Red foam board – three 1-1/2”x30” stripes and four 1-1/2”x17” stripes
2. Score lightly first and then press more firmly to cut deeper, with several passes of the knife. Replace blade often.
3. For flag background, place 20”x30” white foam board horizontally on work surface. Use CraftBond Ultra Stix All
to attach blue foam board to upper left corner. Align 13” edge of blue piece with the 30” edge of white background. Wait to glue red stripes.
4. Choose words for flag and write them on scrap copy paper. Before writing on red stripes, practice using
Painter’s® Marker to write words on paper. Or use pencil and practice writing on backs of red stripes to plan
spacing on each line. Then, with Painter’s, write words on red stripes and add year at end if desired. Errors can
be fixed by immediately dabbing lightly with paper towel while ink is still wet, letting area dry and writing correct
letter.

5. Align and glue one short stripe and one long stripe even with top and bottom of flag background. Position rest of
stripes on flag background. Use craft knife to cut 1-1/2” strips from scrap foam board to use as spacers between
red stripes to standardize spacing.
6.
For stars, cut seven 3-1/2” stars from red cardstock using die cutting machine, or use Star pattern to trace
seven stars on cardstock. Cut out with scissors. Use Stix-All to attach paper stars to white side scrap foam board
stars. Use craft knife and metal ruler on cutting mat to cut around stars leaving a 1/4” white border.
7. For dimension, position and use one or two layers of foam mounting tape to attach stars to blue foam board. 8. For hangers, on back measure and mark 2-1/2” down from top and 3” in from each side. At each mark an
adult should use craft knife to make 1/4” long, shallow horizontal slits. Carefully insert knife blade into each slit,
angled up toward top and remove. Slightly separate curved ends of paper clips 1/4”. Insert shorter rounded ends
up into slits, creating hanger loops with longer ends of paper clips. If loose, squeeze glue into slit area. Let dry.
