Types of quizzes

Graded quiz: a column will be created in the Gradebook when published.

Practice quiz: not graded, and does not appear in the Gradebook.

Graded survey: giving points for completing the survey; a column created in the Gradebook when published.
Not graded based on right or wrong answers. The point value for each survey question does not matter.
Students get the maximum possible points whether or not they complete all the questions in the survey.

Ungraded survey: no points; does not appear in the Gradebook.
Quiz Settings
Quizzes can be imported to Canvas if you have a quiz export
file from Blackboard. Once imported, they are listed on the Quizzes page and in question bank. You can also add new
quizzes using the Add Quiz button, which takes you to the quiz creation/edit page. There are two tabs, Details and
Questions. The Details tab is where you set up the options/settings for the quiz.





Shuffle Answers:
 Shuffle answers = randomize
answers (Note: Avoid answers such
as “Both A and C”, “All of the
above” when this option is
checked.)
 Question group = randomized
questions (Note: If you need your
questions to appear in a specific
order, do not place quiz questions
inside a question group.)
Time Limit: The time allowed to
complete the quiz. Note that timed
quizzes begin once a student begins the
exam and will not be paused if the
student navigates away from the quiz.
No time limit = unlimited time.
Keep Submissions Anonymous: this
option is available for Survey/Graded
Survey.
Allow Multiple Attempts: When
multiple attempts option is checked,
you can choose which score to keep
(the default is the highest score), and
set attempt limit.
Let Students See Their Quiz Responses.
This is the default option. This option
shows students’ responses, whether
the responses are correct or incorrect,
and general feedbacks/comments (if
any). If you do not want students to see that information, uncheck the box.



You can let students view quiz results but restrict their view to:
 Only Once After Each Attempt. Students will only be able to view the results immediately after they have
completed the quiz. (Note: This option may not be appropriate for quizzes that require manual grading, such
as essay questions, where students would require additional views to see the updated results. You can use
the Moderate Quiz feature to give students additional views to their quiz results.)
 Only After Their Last Attempt. If more than 1 attempt allowed, be aware that not all students may
complete all attempts and therefore may never see their quiz responses.
Let Students See The Correct Answers. This is the default option. If you do not want students to see their quiz
responses, uncheck the box. However, you can control when and for how long students can see the correct
answers by setting dates/times in the Show and Hide fields. (See the screenshot on p. 1.)
 The default is that students see correct answers immediately after quiz is submitted.
 To create a date range to display the answers, set a start date in the Show field and an ending date in the
Hide field.
 To always show answers after a specific date, set a date in the Show field.
 To hide answers after a specific date, set a date in the Hide field.
(Note: If the Only Once After Each Attempt option is selected, it will override any show or hide dates or times.)
Show One Question at a Time.
 Lock questions after answering: this will prohibit students from going back to previous questions once they
press the Next button. Students will get a warning message when they begin the quiz when this option is
selected.
Quiz Restrictions
You can restrict the quiz by setting up an access code and/or IP address so it can only be taken in specific situations, for
example, proctored by ProctorU or taken in a test center. You can also set up date restrictions.
Due Date and Availability Dates
Quizzes have an auto-submit feature tied to the Until date,
which may affect student submissions.





No dates: quiz is never marked late and autosubmitted at course conclude
Due date only: quiz is marked late at Due date and
auto-submitted at course conclude
Due date with Until date: quiz is marked late at
Due date and auto-submitted at Until date
Time limit: quiz is auto-submitted when time
expires
Time limit with Until date: quiz is auto-submitted
when time expires unless the Until date expires
first
Different due and availability dates for different
students.
By default, the quiz is for everyone in the course, and the
due/availability dates is set for everyone. You can assign
individual user or group different due or availability dates
using the +Add button. However, this option only allows
you to add different dates. If you want to allow a student
extra time/attempt, you will need to do it through Moderate Quiz (see Moderate Quiz section on p. 4).

Adding Questions to the Quiz
Once you have set up the settings for your quiz, click the Questions tab to add quiz questions and points. You can add
questions one at a time, or as a question group, or find existing questions from question banks to use.
New Question: create questions one at a time. When adding question,
make sure you save the question by clicking on the Update Question
button. Otherwise the question won’t be saved.
New Question Group: create a question group, and choose certain
number of questions from the group. You can select an existing
question bank as a question group. Question group allows for randomization of the questions. If you need your
questions to appear in a specific order, do not place quiz questions inside a question group.
Find Questions: allows you to choose questions from existing question banks. You have the option to make the
questions you choose a group.
Types of Quiz Questions
There are 11 types of questions you can add to the quiz. Some types of questions may need special attention:
Fill-in-the-blank questions: Currently fill-in-the-blank answers are not case
sensitive. All possible correct answers need to be included.
Fill-in-Multiple-Blanks questions: When creating this type of question, replace
the words you want students to enter in the question with reference words
with no space in between, surrounded by brackets. Fill-in-multiple-blanks
answers are not case sensitive. Partial credit will be assigned if only one of the
fields is filled out correctly.
Multiple answer: Points are equally distributed among the answers. This
question type awards a fraction of the points available for each correct answer
selection and subtracts an equivalent fraction for incorrect answer selection.
For example, a question is worth 1 point and has 4 response choices: 2 correct and 2 incorrect. If a student selected 1
correct and 1 incorrect, he would earn .5 point for correct answer, but then that amount would subtract .5 point for the
incorrect answer, bringing the point total to 0.
Text (no question): This is useful when you have different parts in a quiz and each part is based on one scenario.

Creating a new question is quite straightforward for most question types. However, some types of questions may
require extra time in creation. Here are the guides on how to create them:
 Multiple dropdown question (https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-2917)
 Likert scale question (https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-2923)
 Matching question (https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-2926)
 Formula question with a single variable (https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-2931)
 Simple formula question (https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-2941)
Save vs. Save & Publish
Use the Save button to save your quiz. If you want to see the student view and make sure it appears correctly, click the
Preview button. You can go back to edit it. The Publish button allows you to publish the quiz any time. You can
unpublish the quiz even after it’s published as long as there is no attempt made on the quiz.
You can also view more options by clicking on the gear icon. The options are slightly different depending on whether or
not the quiz is published, or there are attempts/submissions.
Moderate Quiz
The Moderate Quiz feature allows you to give individual students extra time and/or attempt for the quiz, and to unlock
the quiz after it is closed. You can only moderate the quiz after it is published. Click on Moderate This Quiz, find the
student that needs extra time or attempt, click on the pencil icon, and then you can modify the time/attempt. After you
save the change, you will see the information you have just modified under the student name.

The Moderate Quiz feature also allows you to view students attempts after they have taken the quiz. You can view
students’ quiz log, their answers in each attempt, and assign Fudge Points (extra points) to individual students. The quiz
log gives you some useful information on students screen activity on Canvas during the quiz. It does not prove anything,
so interpret with caution.

Regrade Questions
Only some types of questions can be regraded: multiple choice, multiple answers, and true/false questions. To regrade a
question, go to the quiz, and click on Edit. (You will see a warning message saying students have already submitted the
quiz.) Find the question you want to regrade, change the correct answer(s), and select a regrade option from the pop-up
window that best meets your needs. After that, click on Update Question, then Save the quiz. The question will be
regraded. In the student view, regraded questions are marked with an orange banner. (Note: 1. Questions linked to a
question bank cannot be regraded; 2. Adding or removing a question does not trigger the quiz regrade feature; changing
the point value for a quiz question also does not trigger a quiz regrade; the student's submitted quiz will show the
updated point value, but the current grade won't change in the Gradebook and it has to be updated manually.)

Quiz Statistics
You can view quiz statistics for quizzes that have been published and have at least one submission. You can also
download CSV files to view Student Analysis or Item Analysis for each quiz question.
To view quiz statistics, click on the title of the quiz and then Quiz Statistics. It
will generate the quiz summary as well as Question Breakdown. You can also
view analysis report by clicking on the Student Analysis or Item Analysis icons.
The report will be generated as CSV file for you to download.
The summary shows the quiz average score, high score, low score, standard
deviation, and average time of quiz completion. In the summary graph, the xaxis indicates the quiz scored percentages, and the y-axis indicates the number
of students who received each percentage.
Each question includes a breakdown with each question answer choice. Each response also displays the number of
respondents who selected the answer. To view the names of the students who selected an answer choice, click
the [x respondents] link. True/False and Multiple Choice quiz questions also include an item discrimination index.

Question Banks
Question banks can be accessed on the Quizzes page by clicking on the gear icon. All the quizzes you have
created/imported are listed there as question banks. On the Question Banks list page, you can change the name of the
bank, and add new question bank. To edit a question bank, you will need to click on the title of the bank. There you can
edit questions, add new questions, and move questions to another bank. The questions added on the fly are included in
the Unfiled Questions.
