THE
in this
PURSUIT OF
HEALTHIER CHOICES
with Jayne Pope, HCM CEO
More and more evidence today shows that lifestyle
and behavior choices can impact chronic diseases.
What we eat, how we stay fit, and whether we get
timely preventive screenings are important factors
in the pursuit of healthier lifestyle choices.
In 2013, Hill Country Memorial partnered with
the Fredericksburg community to complete a
comprehensive Gillespie County Health Needs
Assessment. Through the assessment we
discovered that our home community could
benefit most by increasing healthy behaviors.
To that end, we have the pleasure of
working with the founders and growers at the
Fredericksburg Farmers Market and being part
of their mission to encourage healthy eating.
This season marks the hospital’s third year of
collaboration with the market and our HCM Oak
Tree Café. From May to October, our chefs are
inspired to create and share healthy soup recipes
using fresh fruits and vegetables purchased from
farmers market growers, and every Thursday, the
HCM market soups are a sellout.
Preventing and managing chronic conditions
through nutrition and activity are no small tasks.
To accomplish them, the HCM Wellness Center
offers diabetes nutrition counseling and
comprehensive fitness facilities with certified
trainers. We also provide nutrition education
programs in Blanco, Boerne, Fredericksburg,
and Kerrville through the Special Supplemental
Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and
Children (WIC).
While working in partnership with our Gillespie
County business community in 2014, HCM created
Salud for You, a nocost employee health and
wellness program for underserved employees. Salud
for You provides an opportunity for Fredericksburg
and surrounding area businesses to maintain a
healthy workforce.
This past February, HCM and the HCMH
Foundation kicked off a communitywide event—
Red in Fred—to “create hearthealthy” awareness
for women. Only one American woman in five
believes that heart disease is her greatest health
threat. Yet, one in three women dies of heart
disease each year. Red in Fred addresses that
challenge by providing free cholesterol and diabetes
screenings and hearthealthy education events.
Main Street retailers, Fredericksburg art
galleries, the City of Fredericksburg, and the
Fredericksburg Chamber of Commerce partnered
with the hospital to make Red in Fred a great
success. The first Red in Fred event went directly
to Main Street where the red store hosted our
medical screenings during the First Friday Art
Walk. The Chamber of Commerce hosted a
second Red in Fred screening at a FunAfterFive
event. More than 150 people, primarily women,
were screened during Red in Fred. Husbands,
loved ones, family, and friends came out to
support and understand more about women’s
heart health. Red in Fred is now slated to run
annually, and we look forward to the next event
in February 2016.
Thanks to these programs and partnerships,
we continue to grow our endeavors.
Our HCM vision is to empower others to
“create healthy.” It is this vision that leads the
way as we continue to pursue healthier lives for
those we serve. From the cover photo of the
Hugh and John Washburne families to the stories
inside, you will find the theme of partnership
continues throughout this issue of Purpose.
Enjoy,

CREATING HEALTHY IN OUR
HEARTENING NEWS FOR ACTIVE
TEENS: FREE SCREENINGS
Want to do something special for the teenager in your life?
Make him or her an appointment for a free heart screening at HCM.
Several times throughout the year, HCM offers
free community heart-screening events known
as Score. These events are specifically geared
toward teenagers to detect hypertrophic
cardiomyopathy, a thickening of the heart
muscle that can make it harder for the heart
to pump blood. Usually an inherited condition,
hypertrophic cardiomyopathy affects one in
500 people and is the leading cause of sudden
cardiac death in young athletes.
A SIMPLE, YET IMPORTANT SCREENING
Top and bottom left: Technician Sara DelaPaz uses an ultrasound machine
to examine high school student Cole Jenschke’s heart. Bottom right:
Volunteer Alyssa Turner and organizer Amy Montgomery, cardiac rehab RN,
are all smiles at a Score screening.
2
“Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy often goes
undiagnosed because many people with the
condition don’t have symptoms,” says Kevin
Gallagher, DO, a cardiovascular disease
specialist. “Even when there are signs, they
can be very subtle so they’re not always picked
up. An athlete may just think he or she is
slower than the others, not keeping up, or
not as good.”
The screening, for young people ages 14 to
18, is performed with an electrocardiogram,
which measures the heart’s electrical activity.
It also includes an echocardiogram, an
ultrasound of the heart, which allows the
cardiologist to identify abnormalities in the
heart muscle.
HCM RECEIVES NATIONAL RECOGNITION
Throughout the spring, HCM was honored for its outstanding quality and patient-centered
care. In addition to being named one of the 100 Top Hospitals in the nation by Truven Health
Analytics for the fourth year in a row, HCM was one of three similarly sized hospitals selected
for Becker’s Hospital Review’s 100 Great Hospitals in America. Also, the hospital was chosen
by Healthgrades for its five-star-level care in patient safety and patient experience.

HILLCOUNTRYMEMORIAL.ORG | SUMMER 2015
“The tests are completely painless and
no preparation is needed beforehand,” says
Amy Montgomery, RN, a nurse in Cardiac
Rehabilitation at HCM. “They’re usually in
and out in about 20 minutes.”
TAKE ACTION TO SAVE LIVES
Lance Moffett, Athletic Director for the
Fredericksburg Independent School District,
encourages all eligible young athletes in the
area to take advantage of the service.
“It’s always devastating when tragedy strikes
a young athlete, but it’s even worse when the
death could have been prevented by detecting
a medical condition,” Moffett says. “By offering
these free screenings, Hill Country Memorial is
demonstrating its commitment to the safety
and well-being of our young people in the
community.”

cardiomyopathy saves lives. For more

Washburne Family
TEAM UP FOR
GALA XVI
LUNCHEON
I
n 2004, Leslie and Hugh Washburne bought the
Fredericksburg property now known as Hoffman
Haus. Leslie can still remember how she felt the
morning after the purchase.
“It was panic,” Leslie says. “I said to myself, ‘What
have I done?’ I knew nothing about the hotel business,
and the property was not in good shape. I drove to a
bookstore and bought something like The Complete Idiot's
Guide to Running a Bed and Breakfast.”
But over time, the Washburnes lovingly transformed
a small complex of lodgings needing “major TLC” into
a luxury bed and breakfast, exuding rustic, oldworld
charm. On October 7, 2015, Hoffman Haus will provide
the perfect backdrop for the Gala XVI Luncheon
benefiting HCM.
BOTH GENERATIONS COMMITTED TO EXCELLENCE
Hugh and Leslie, who were hosts of the Gala XV
Luncheon in 2013, are partnering with their son,
restaurateur John Washburne, to host and completely
underwrite this year’s Gala Luncheon. John, the owner
of Otto’s German Bistro and Tubby’s Ice House in
Fredericksburg, will provide and donate the catering and
cocktails. The Flower Pail is designing and donating all
of the fresh centerpieces for the luncheon.
The Gala Luncheon will be the first time Leslie and
John collaborate on a project of this magnitude. The event
will accommodate 150 guests and include tours of Hoffman
Haus rooms and cabins. When asked why he and his
mother took on this challenge, John says, “My parents have
lived in Fredericksburg for 10 years, and I’ve been here for
six, and the community has been so welcoming.” He adds,
“HCM is a huge anchor for us, in the sense that it provides
such quality care. It’s important to us to show our support
for the hospital and an honor to contribute in this way.”
Mother and son enjoy hosting events together
because, as John says, they share the same business
and aesthetic values: Treat your employees well, and
never sacrifice quality.
And never take yourself too seriously.
Leslie, who is also a professionally trained chef, still
laughs as she recalls an incident from many years ago
when she taught cooking classes in her Dallas home.
“I was teaching healthy cooking to a group of young
moms with children in elementary school,” Leslie says.
“John comes home from school and walks in the back
door eating a hot dog and Slurpee from 7Eleven.”
EAGER ANTICIPATION
On October 7, the Washburnes will be ready and
waiting to welcome guests—as will longtime Gala

Remarkable care relies on the extraordinary
support of our families, friends, and neighbors.
To those who have given to the HCMH
Foundation—through the gift of their time and
generous donations—we are forever grateful.
Now, we celebrate you.
THANK YOU EVENT
On October 15, 2015, the HCMH Foundation
will honor our very special Gala XVI
underwriters with an event not soon to be
forgotten. Bruce Williams and Linda Davis
will host an earlyevening patron party in their
exquisite home at Boot Ranch, the Texas Hill
Country’s premier private golf community.
The party is for Gala underwriters who
contribute at the Bronze Level and above.
This exclusive event is being completely
underwritten by Estela and Jim Avery, Gala
Honorary Chairmen and Patron Party Cochairs;
Carol Ann Shepherd, Raffle Chairman and
Patron Party Cochair; and Karen and Danny
Gotcher, Patron Party Cochairs.
“This event is a big ‘thank you’ to the people
who have so graciously made contributions
to benefit HCM,” says Karen Gotcher.
“Fredericksburg residents are so fortunate to
have such a wonderful community hospital, but
HCM couldn’t continue to operate at the high
level it does without their ongoing support.”
AN ELEGANT EVENING
The event is being catered by August E’s, a
local finedining establishment specializing in
nouveau Texas cuisine. Executive chef Leu
Savanh and his wife, Dawn, are personally
donating the adult beverages.
Our 2015 patron party promises to be an
exciting evening that combines a stunning
venue and superb buffet with lively
conversation. For information on this event
or underwriting opportunities, please call

FORWARD
THINKING
Brings Peace
of Mind
W
hat if you had a serious accident or illness and
couldn’t speak for yourself? If you were in a
coma, what kind of medical care would you
want? Whom would you want to make health care decisions
for you? These are important questions to consider.
You and your loved ones’ endoflife plans should be
clearly stated and legally enforceable to help avoid
conflicts and confusion among family members and
health care providers if you or your loved ones become
incapacitated or pass away. Here are four essential legal
documents to prepare:
A will makes it clear how you want your property to
be distributed after you pass away. For example, you
can direct property to family, friends, or charity. You’ll
choose an executor of your will, who ensures your estate
is transferred according to your wishes. You’ll also name
a guardian if you have minor or dependent children.
A revocable living trust functions like a will but
allows your estate to avoid the time and expense of
probate (the public legal process of administering an
estate under a will) and helps ensure your estate’s
privacy. If you own real estate or have considerable
assets, you may want to consider a revocable living trust.
A durable power of attorney (DPA allows you to
designate someone you trust to make financial, tax, and
legal decisions on your behalf if you lose your decision
making capacity. An advance directive is a way for you to specify what
kind of medical care you would like to have or not have
should you be unable to speak for yourself. One type of
advance directive is called a living will. In a living will,
you specify whether you wish to undergo any number of
procedures or treatments in the case of terminal illness. A
DPA for health care is another kind of advance directive.
In this document, you designate someone—usually a
trusted relative or friend—to make the medical decisions
you would make for yourself if you were not critically ill.
You should contact an attorney if you have a
complicated financial situation, a blended family, or
considerable assets. Hill Country Memorial Hospital
Foundation will be happy to assist you in finding an
attorney. An experienced lawyer can make sure you
cover all your bases—especially when writing a will or
living trust—which can help avoid family confusion
after you’re gone.

olonoscopies are no laughing matter, and at HCM we take them seriously. You may have seen this information in
your local newspaper in March, and we hope it inspired you to schedule a colonoscopy for yourself or a loved one.
Heinie. Bottom. Bum. No matter what you call it, there’s no excuse not to get it checked with a colonoscopy.
What is a colonoscopy?
A: A colonoscopy is a screening procedure that enables
us to find potentially precancerous polyps in the colon.
Q

J. STAUFFER, MD

colonoscopies give us greater visibility, so we’re able
to detect smaller polyps sooner and remove them
immediately during the colonoscopy. The whole process
takes about twoandahalf hours from registration
to discharge.
Who should get a colonoscopy?
A: If you’re older than age 50, you should get an initial,
screening colonoscopy as soon as possible. If you have a
family history of cancer, you may need to be screened at
an earlier age. If we don’t find anything, then you won’t
need another colonoscopy for 10 years. We work with
you to create a screening schedule that fits your lifestyle
and risk factors.
Q How are today’s colonoscopies
different?
A: Colonoscopies today are performed with light
anesthesia, meaning that you are completely asleep
but you wake up quickly afterward. Additionally our
Q Why should I have my colonoscopy
at HCM?
A: Not all colonoscopies are created equal, and we’re
really good at them. At HCM, our goal is to give
patients peace of mind, not to perform the most
procedures. Every colonoscopy is performed by a
certified and dedicated specialist, and based on their
feedback, our patients are very satisfied with the care
we give them. But the bottom line is that we find
almost 50 percent more potentially cancerous polyps
than other colonoscopies. Finding more polyps means
preventing more cancer, creating a healthier you.
Talk with your doctor and call to schedule a
colonoscopy today.

GOING THE
EXTRA MILE
Off-Duty HCM Staff Comes to
the Aid of a Fellow Fitness Buff
S
eptember 30, 2014, started out like any other day for Jim Holley. Holley had risen at 4 am
and headed to the HCM Wellness Center, where he had an earlymorning rowing class.
Well into the workout, the instructor, Leigh Dempsey, noticed something was amiss.
Holley was leaning over to his side, but it was too early in the class for stretching. Dempsey
rushed over and directed a class member to call 911.
“Everything was happening so quickly,” Dempsey recalls. “Holley was starting to foam
at the mouth, and I was thinking I was going to have to do CPR.”
HELP WAS NEARBY
Fortunately, Dempsey had plenty of help. Three HCM nurses were in her rowing class,
and HCM’s Chief Medical Officer was on a stationary bike nearby. Dempsey grabbed the
defibrillator while Jim Partin, MD, checked Holley’s vital signs and couldn’t find a pulse.
Cherisse Smith, RN, started chest compressions, while her fellow nurses Marilyn Berry
and Maryvell Cortez checked for other problems and kept Holley comfortable.
By the time the ambulance arrived minutes later, they had revived Holley.
“I looked down, and he was looking at me,” recalls Smith. “He probably did have a very
faint pulse, and the compressions helped restore the blood flow to his brain.”
Holley says it was a simple case of overexertion. “We were doing a second round of wind
sprints, and I was trying to beat my mark,” he says. “I ran out of air and started gasping and
getting a little dizzy. I thought, ‘I’m getting ready to conk out,’ so I rolled to the side.”
ALL CLEAR
Holley was evaluated in the Emergency Department (ED) and given fluids. After a couple
of hours, he was cleared to go home.
Melinda, Holley’s wife, says they were lucky that her husband was in the right place at the
right time. Not only did the medical team respond flawlessly, she says, but they also went
beyond the call of duty.
Both nurses Smith and Cortez visited Holley in the ED before heading to work. Instructor
Dempsey and Dr. Partin also stopped by to check on him.
EXCEEDING EXPECTATIONS
“As health care professionals, they did what was expected of them at a time of crisis,” Melinda
says. “However, to go the extra mile and stop by Jim’s bedside was much more than business as
usual. At a time of such stress, it was comforting to know that people cared.
“Leigh remarked that HCM Wellness members are a family,” Melinda adds. “We certainly
felt that level of concern. I can honestly say the entire HCM staff that was present that day
walked the walk and lived up to the hospital credo of ‘Exceeding Expectations.’”

Gratitude
“THE FIRST CHECK I EVER WROTE TO THE HOSPITAL
WAS MAY 2, 1970. IT BECAME A HABIT OF GIVING
THAT I WAS NOT ABLE TO BREAK.”
—Don Holden (established HCM Endowment Fund)
The front cover of this issue of Purpose is a photo that brings me great joy.
With three generations represented, I see the story of HCM in each face. Each
generation works diligently to ensure the next has what it needs to succeed. In
Fredericksburg, that includes a high-quality, community-supported hospital.
The above quote from Don Holden is in a book that sits next to my computer.
And while I never had the good fortune to meet Mr. Holden, his passion and
devotion to sustaining HCM inspire me daily.
You see, Don and his wife, Julie, never had children; rather, they saw our
hospital as their child. They lovingly invested in HCM, established perpetual
funds to ensure its viability, and encouraged others to do the same.
Giving is both a reflection of the best parts of who we are and the key to
the most important work we will accomplish as neighbors and communities.
As you read through the Gratitude section, I hope you, too, will find
inspiration from the investment made by so many to ensure HCM is here
for generations to come.
With deep gratitude,
Amanda M. Stevens, CFRE

INVESTING IN OUR NURSES
The HCMH Foundation recently
recognized 2015 Nurse Stipend
recipients and donors at an annual
RN stipend dinner. The stipend
provides financial support for current
HCM employees who are finishing the
final phase of their Registered Nurse
education. It is made possible by the
Frantzen-Rinker Nursing Fund, Mac and
Polly MacQueen Nursing Fund and the
Julie Holden Nursing Education Fund.
The Foundation has awarded stipends to
nursing students for the past seven years.
