Russell & Horist - 10/31
We would like to thank all of you for attending
conferences last week. It is such an important time to
celebrate the success of your child and discuss
learning goals. Your insight and input is valuable to
us and we are grateful for our collaborative
approach to learning!
Also, thank you to all the families that sent in
treats and our party volunteers for our successful
Halloween celebrations. A special thanks to our room
parents for their organization! Everyone had a
SPOOK-tacular time!
New Friend Math:
I hope the students feel so proud of how they did on our last
math test, they did a terrific job! This week and next we will
be focusing on decimal place-value up to the thousandths place.
Please also continue to have your students practice their
multiplication facts at home. Xtra math can be a great tool, as
well as the fun games we’ve learned in class so far! Also,
everydaymathonline.com is a great resource too! Let me know
if your student needs their login and/or password again.
Old Friend Math:
This week we began unit 4, Division! Because knowing
multiplication facts is crucial to understanding and solving
division problems, I ask that your child be practicing his/her
facts daily! Xtra math is a great resource; however, there are
many other fun online multiplication/division games
(everydaymathonline.com is another great resource)! If your
child has misplaced their password please ask them to get it
from me! Thank you!

This week in writing, students
learned the importance of writing
with varied sentence length and
structure. Together, we used a
sentence fluency rubric to assess
different writing examples for
sentence fluency. Then students
looked at examples of their own
writing and evaluated their own
sentence fluency. On Thursday, we
listened to an interview with
author Nick Veasey and his
thoughts on the importance of
varying sentences to create fluidity
within writing. We also read his
text X-treme X-ray, As writers, we
are now more cautious of the
sentences we’re writing!
SCIENCE: We’re starting a new and exciting mini-unit in science titled, Habitats.
In this unit, students will learn the concept of food chains and food webs.
Students will understand the meaning of producers, decomposers,
consumers, herbivores, and carnivores. We will also focus on the many kinds
of environments that different animals and plants live in. As a culminating
activity to this mini-unit, students will dissect an owl pellet, which they are all
looking forward to doing!
