BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES
George Stewart McIntosh, born Fort House, Dundee, Scotland on March 16, 1935 of parents Ernest
Sheldon McIntosh & Elizabeth Johnstone Watson Bathie; educated at Harris Academy Dundee. His
parents were members of McCheyne
Memorial Church of Scotland and Stewart
was a member of the 9th. Co. Boys
Brigade there; the family moved to
Stretford, Manchester in 1953 and Stewart
attended Manchester College of Science
and Technology 1953-56 attaining only an
Inter.Bsc. in mechanical engineering. He
spent 2 years National Service Nov. 195658 in the RAF as a general fitter based in
Wildenwrath, Germany where he became
a committed Christian. On his return from
National Service he worked in Henshaws,
Stockport, as an agricultural engineer, in
order to obtain funds to attend London
Bible College, Marylebone Road, which
he entered in September 1959. He was to
remain there for four years, failing his
B.D. by attempting additional Hebrew, but
gaining his diploma (ALBC) with the
college. He was a member of the student
council and in that process met, Janet Purton, and they became engaged in September 1962. They were
married on August 23, 1963 in Vernon Chapel, Sutton, Sy. Stewart worked as a driver and TV installer
for Radio Rentals, Worcester Park as well as assisting in the outreach of Vernon Chapel (Brethren
Assembly) to the community while the couple sought God’s purpose for them in missioning overseas.
In 1964 their first child, Alison, was born and they were accepted for service with the Regions Beyond
Missionary Union, an interdenominational evangelical faith mission, and sailed for Peru in a cargo
boat, MV Stuttgart, from Antwerp in May 1965. Although Janet was a fluent Spanish speaker, Stewart
was counselled to attend a mission Language School in Cochabamba, Bolivia. Not only did Stewart
study Spanish there, but he became involved with the Quechua people and language there, as well as
being mentored by men like C. Peter Wagner and some early Bolivian Indian Mission, (BIM)
missionaries the Shedds, Minnie Myers, don Robertito, and Bolivian church leaders like Jaime Goytia.
Their son John was born in Cochabamba. In April 1966 the family moved to the north-east Montaña
region of Peru to work with the Peru Inland Mission and were engaged in ministries among the
Quechua people, Bible Institutes, programmed learning and theological education by extension. Their
second daughter, Ruth, was born in the evangelical hospital in Lamas, the last missionary child to be
born there. They returned, briefly, as a family to Bolivia, before their furlough in 1970 to help in the
extension programme for training of national leaders. While on furlough in Tayport, Fife, in a cottage
they had purchased before leaving for Peru, their third daughter, Rachel, was born. With the help and
encouragement of Prof. Douglas Gifford and Quechua expert Leslie Hoggarth, Stewart entered as a
mature student and obtained his masters degree in Latin American Linguistics and Dialectology from
St. Andrews University and several years later would obtain his Ph.D from the same institution for
research on Quechua religious terms in the provinces of Apurimac and San Martín, Perú.
On return to Peru the couple worked in the San Martín area in the Bible Institute and in home
schooling their children, Stewart also returning to Bolivia to the Quechua and extension ministry.
However in 1972 they moved to the highlands of Peru to Apurimac to work among Quechua people
there, firstly in Chalhuanca and then in Abancay as well as teaching in the Andahuaylas Bible Institute,
practising hospitality, home schooling and visiting many remote surrounding areas. Stewart was also
elected field director for the Mission and served in this capacity for twelve years allowing him the
opportunity for visiting and encouraging people in many other areas of Peru.
In 1977 the family moved to Lima to respond to the invitation for Stewart to teach Church
History in the Lima Evangelical Seminary and, in passing, allow their four children to attend British
3
Council schools in Lima, for secondary education. He was to introduce Latin-American Church history
into the syllabus, as well as a course on the Gospel and culture.
By 1980 Stewart, with other Latin American colleagues, had begun the first Department of
Missiology in Latin America and had also become a member of the Latin American Theological
Fraternity and a member of the American Society of Missiologists (ASM). In the late eighties and
nineties he became more involved in writing - producing two Spanish editions of a text book on an
Introduction to Latin American Missiology and another entitled Seven essays on Latin American
Missiology Today as well as many papers, pamphlets and courses on Latin American Church History,
Cultural Anthropology, Missiology, the Gospel and Culture, etc. He was a founder member of
CEMAA (Centro Evangélico Misiológico Andino-Amazónico), an entity designed to further the
growth and development of the Christian Church among autochthonous groups of the Andean region
and its first director of its post-graduate centre of mission studies. He was also a teacher in many Bible
Institutes and Seminaries of various denominations in Peru including the Peru Evangelical Church
(IEP), Christian Missionary Alliance (CYMA), Asambleas de Dios, Iglesia Pentecostal del Perú, etc.
He became involved in other projects such as the use of Hovercraft in medical provision in the
Amazonia, the setting up of a commission on Evangelical Church Statistics (PRODECO/PROMIES)
and the encouraging of national missionary societies (AMEN and the Huancayo project), consultations
on Urban Mission (COMU I, II & III) although he remained on the margins of the CLADE conferences
and only attended two international conferences as a delegate, Pattaya ’80 and one of IPCHE in
Holland where he became involved in action against apartheid.
With the deteriorating socio-political situation in Peru with the terrorist movements (SL,
MRTA, Rodrigo Franco, etc.), gross military interventionism, violence and political machinations, of
the nineties, Stewart also became closely involved in voicing and acting out a Christian perspective
with respect to these issues as can be seen in his Fe evangélica y el acontecer nacional writings
amongst others and standing with the National Evangelical Council of Peru (CONEP) and the Peace
and Hope Commission (Paz y Esperanza). In 1993 he began, with Janet, the translation and publication
of José de Acosta’s (1540-1600) seminal work De procuranda indorum salute on Missiology into
English. He had, of course, edited and produced earlier works on the Life and Times of John Ritchie, a
Scot’s pioneer missionary to Peru and the Money Memoirs, 3 vols. on the life and times of New
Zealander, Dr. Herbert Money, National Council of Churches Secretary in Peru (1940-1965), whose
wife, Netta Kemp, was a Scot.
At that time he also became involved in Theological education projects at an international
level through ALISTE,ALIET & AETAL.
He continued to be a contributor to several missiological dictionaries, a writer and publisher of
poems and stories and published his first novel – Mullingar based on the experiences of his granduncles as homesteaders in Canada.
Later in the nineties, Stewart and Janet both taught as missionary scholars in residence (19971999) in Providence College, Manitoba having taught in North America also in the Eastern Baptist
Theological Seminary, Philadelphia on two earlier occasions. He was also part of the faculty of
FATELA (Facultad Teológica Latinoaméricana) teaching modules on mission in various Latin
American republics.
While being based in Scotland, at the present time, he has been engaged as a part-time pastor with the
United Free Church of Scotland and is at present an elder in his local Church of Scotland community
while mentoring Latin American students studying at the CSCNWW, Edinburgh and at Selly Oak,
Birmingham.

Janet McIntosh née Purton. Born in Cheam, Surrey, on April 8th. 1934, Janet was the second
daughter of schoolteacher parents Edgar and Nellie Gladys Purton. She and her sister Vivien were
brought up in a Christian home, where Bible reading, prayer and attendance at Church were the norm.
Two house moves were to bring her to Carshalton Beeches.
Educated at the local primary school during the years of the Second
World War, she then transferred to Wallington County School for Girls in
1945 and thence to Southampton University in 1952. There she studied
for a general BA degree in French, Spanish and Latin, gaining a Lower
2nd., and a post-graduate diploma in education. It was while at University
that Janet’s Christian faith became a personal commitment and, during
attendance at the Keswick Convention, she felt the call of God to serve
Him abroad.
In 1956, Janet obtained a teaching post in the Convent High Girls School
in Southampton, remaining there until 1960. In pursuit of and preparation for her calling, she then
returned to the London area to study for a Diploma in Theology at London Bible College. It was during
this time that she became acquainted with Dr. George Stewart McIntosh. Completing her course, she
then took the 12-week Wycliffe Translators’ course, gaining a distinction in Grammar. Stewart and she
married in 1963 in Vernon Chapel, Sutton, Surrey.
In 1965, following the birth of their first child, Alison, in 1964, they left for South America. Initially in
Cochabamba, Bolivia, for language studies, Janet made an attempt to learn Bolivian Quechua. Their
second child, John, was born there. In 1966, transferring to the San Martin Department of Peru, her
main occupation centred on the care of their children and informal ministry of Sunday School teaching
and hospitality. Their third child, Ruth, was born in 1968 in the historical Evangelical Hospital in
Lamas. Returning to the UK for leave in 1969, Rachel, their fourth child, was born in Dundee,
Scotland.
While the children were growing up, both in the lowland and highland regions of Peru, Janet’s ministry
was focussed on home schooling the children, Sunday School teaching and hospitality. When a move
was made to the capital, Lima, in 1977, the children then attended day schools, and Janet moved into
lecturing in Spanish her course in ‘Introduction to New Testament Greek’ at both undergraduate and
post-graduate institutions. She also, in conjunction with others, set up a ministry of Bible Teaching and
Pastoral Care of pastors’ wives and other women in ministry, called Phoebe.
On return to settle in the UK, Janet became a Reader in the United Free Church of Scotland and wrote
one or two locally produced and published Bible Studies. She also studied a course of TEFL.
For two years, from 1997 to1999, Janet lectured at Providence College in Manitoba,Canada, in English
‘Grammar and Composition’ and started up a course in ‘Introduction to Spanish’. She was for a short
time President of the Women’s Association group of the United Free Church in Tayport, Fife, and
continued to minister in small group Bible Studies and women’s meetings in Fife.

MACS MONTHLY & Peru News
MM was an attempt by GSMcI to keep all the members of RBMU Peru
informed of what was happening in the different regions of Peru: San
Martín, Loreto, Amazonas, Apurimac, Lima & Kawai (Ica) while he was
“field director”. It was continued by Ken Scott as Peru News while the
Macs were on furlough and after the Macs leaving RBMU in June, 1986
to form Macresearch. It was difficult for Stewart and Ken some months
to find time to write a report!
