Bellwork: Set up your Cornell notes (using your own paper), then write two sentences that explain what comes to mind when you hear these words – Prehistoric – Stone Age – Village The Beginnings of Human Society Prehistoric People & The Agricultural Revolution Early Human History • Prehistory: (noun) The time of human history before written records. • Divided into two main parts – Old Stone Age – Paleolithic • ~? Until 8000 BCE – New Stone Age – Neolithic • 8000 BCE - ~4000BCE – These dates are different depending on location. Paleolithic – Old Stone Age Neolithic – New Stone Age What Caused these Differences? • About 10,000 years ago a group of people made a remarkable discovery – After having left for a year they returned to find crops growing where they had once scattered seeds • This shift from food-gathering to food-production was a great breakthrough that came to be known as the Neolithic Revolution or the Agricultural Revolution • As people began growing their own food they also began to domesticate animals – Horses, dogs, goats, pigs Important Vocabulary • • • • Paleolithic – Old Stone Age Neolithic – New Stone Age Agriculture – Farming Agricultural or Neolithic Revolution - Change from hunting and gathering to farming • Domestication – process of taming (not wild anymore) usually animals but also plants.
