The Amazing Woodpecker
By: Have Fun Teaching
The woodpecker is an interesting and amazing
bird. It has a strong, pointed beak that acts as a
hammer to remove bark from trees and find
insects to eat. It has a very long tongue, up to
four inches long, that is sticky on the tip for
catching insects.
Most birds have one toe pointing
back and three pointing forward on
each foot. Woodpeckers are a little
bit different. They have two sharp
claws pointing back and two sharp
claws pointing forward on each foot
to help them hold on to the sides of
trees.
The life span of a woodpecker is 4-11 years.
Their favorite foods are insects, fruit, acorns and
nuts. These awesome birds live in forests and
wooded areas with lots of trees. Woodpeckers
can be found all over the world, except in
Australia.

The Rattlesnake Wrestlers
By: Catherine Clarke Fox (Adapted by Have Fun Teaching)
When Heather Ramirez went to the dentist
with her husband Len, she wasn’t there to have
her teeth cleaned. She and her husband are
professional snake removers. They were there to
catch a wild rattlesnake and return it to the wild.
She describes her work as “protecting people from rattlesnakes - and
protecting rattlesnakes from people.” In California, the northern Pacific
rattlesnake often comes face-to-face with humans.
Studies show these snakes usually only bite people who are trying to
catch or kill them. A rattlesnake can even give a loud warning that says,
“I am here, stay away” with the rattles located at the tip of its tail. “We
find rattlesnakes everywhere,” says Ramirez. “In houses, in yards and
woodpiles, under decks.”
Snake Safety Tips
*If you see a snake, don’t touch it. Go tell an adult.
*Look carefully when you go out to play.
*Never put your hands into woodpiles or dark corners of the garage.

The Lion and the Mouse
A lion was awakened from sleep by a mouse
running over his face. Rising up with anger, he caught
the mouse and was about to kill him. Then, the mouse
interrupted saying, "If you would only spare my life, I
would be sure to repay your kindness." The lion
laughed and let him go.
It happened shortly
after this that the lion
was caught by some
hunters, who bound him

him free!

ridiculed the idea that I would ever be
able to help you. You didn’t expect to
receive from me any repayment of your
favor. Now you know that it is possible
for even a mouse to help out a lion."

The Bottlenose Dolphin
The bottlenose dolphin is one of the smartest marine mammals.
Many people think that the dolphin is a fish, but they are actually
mammals. In order for an animal to be a “mammal”, it must be warmblooded, have hair on its skin, and the female must produce milk for its
young.
The bottlenose dolphin gets its name from its bottle-shaped snout.
Bottlenose dolphins usually weigh between 400 and 600 pounds and grow
to be about 10 feet long. The lifespan of a dolphin can be 30 to 50
years of age. The bottlenose dolphin likes to eat other fish, octopus,
and squid.
This animal likes to have fun just like we do! Bottlenose dolphins
love to play in the warm tropical waters and usually stay with a group of
other dolphins. If these dolphins need to defend themselves from
their predator, they will give off a high-pitched sound; “Click, Click,
Click!”
The bottlenose dolphin is an amazing animal. What do you like
