cool times - Great Lakes Safety Training Center

The best looking cars make a car guy like me
stop and stare every time I see one. You
know what I mean. You might even remember the FIRST time you saw “that” car, and I
bet you recall the LAST time you saw it.

A beautifully designed and engineered car
stands out from the crowd for one or more
reasons. Maybe it is the shape of the car that
catches your eye. Maybe it is the color that
first grabs your attention. Maybe it is that
the car is so rare that you have not seen one
like it in years, or maybe ever. (After reading about Ferraris and Lamborghinis for
years, seeing one driving down the road still
gives me chills.)
So, without any more delay, here is the list of
my favorite cars.
Here Comes the Judge!
were built, NASCAR required that all cars used
in their races had to be production cars that were
available to the public. This was a beautiful car
with extreme styling, but it was decided that they
were a little too fast for NASCAR. When that
happened, they were no longer produced for the
rest of us either.
The Cobra
Built for racing,
the
awesome
combination of
an
extremely
lightweight body
paired with a very powerful motor, equaled race
wins and a car that became legendary. Still a
headturner decades after it was introduced, kits
can still be bought so that a person can build this
car and add whatever motor, transmission,
frame, suspension, etc. they desire.
General

1969 to
1971. The 1971 is the rarest of them ... only
374 were sold before the Judge was dropped
from the lineup. From the assembly line, this
car was capable of running from 0-60 mph in
6.1 seconds and hit the finish line of the
quarter mile in 13.4 seconds at 102 mph.
Fast and beautiful ... what a great combination!
The Goat
It’s a Bird! It’s a Plane! No, it’s Superbird!
The Buick Regal Grand National & GNX
Equipped with an insanely large rear wing,
the Superbird, and it’s cousin, the Daytona,
were built

for the racetrack.

This is THE BADDEST Buick ever built! This
came at a time when most cars being built in the
U.S. were not being designed for speed. The
Grand National
was a throwback to the
muscle car era
of the 60’s. It
The 1966 GTO
was not the

could be added
to the Pontiac
LeMans, but it
is still one of my favorites. That long hood with
the subtle hood scoops let air into the 389 c. i.
power plant which exited through a relatively
quiet dual exhaust system. This car was fast,
cool, and had the enough luxury that you could
drive it anywhere in comfort - even to the drag
strip.

was fast and subtle - a wolf in sheep’s clothing. A big difference between
this and a car from the 60’s is that this car was built with a V-6 with power
adders instead of the V-8’s of earlier muscle cars. The 1987 GNX was
capable of running 0-60 mph in 4.7 seconds and a 13.5 second quarter
mile at 102 mph. The only American-made car at the time that could beat
it was the Chevrolet Corvette. Only 547 GNX’s were built in 1987.
What Does This Have to do with Safety?
In order to truly enjoy these cars, we need to be able to see, smell, hear,
feel, and drive these cars. If we lose our eyesight, sense of smell, or hearing, we will not be able to fully enjoy them. So, always protect your eyes,
respiratory system, and ears by wearing the proper protective equipment
(safety glasses, goggles, face shields, respirators, dust masks, earplugs,
etc.) This advice in not just for the workplace. Protect yourself when you
are away from work also. Remember to work safely at home and at the
worksite.
Now it is your turn. Let me know which cars would be on your list. You
