had the pleasure of .witnessing the
opening ceremonies, last Saturday,
of the " Rohnnati Cottage," at the
Baptist Orphanage, Angora,—Ea.
The handsome brick building was
the gift of Mr. and Mrs. Rourman,
highly esteemed residents here.
Mrs. R. has been a director of the
Orphanage for ir^any years, and
this loving gift was the result of
long planning and much expense.
There were over a thousand visitors, and Hammonton's representatives were highly pleased with the
new building, outside and in, the
addresses, exercises by the chir*
dren, and, in fact, with the entire
occasion.

A Surprise To All.
This entire community was amazed when they learned that eight o:
our most prominent and highly respected citizens had been taken to
May's Landing, oil Wednesday.morning, in automobiles, and placed in
charge of Sheriff Joseph-R. Bartlett, the official being handed regular
commitments, charging the men with various offenses, such as disorderly
conduct7^nTinieirnessrforgery7"ar!3onretcr~The^"Sheriff"nianacled- his
prisoners, and placed them in the jail. It was a mystery, unexplainable
by~aiijrof~thlTSccused^ However,~they were not long kept "icTdurance
vile," for Bro. Bartlett exercised his authority and gave each a forfhal
release on his own recognizance ; and they joyfully went on their way
to the Egg Harbor River, where a yacht was in waiting, and they pro
ceeded to enjoy a ride down stream, with its attendant fishing and fun",
which seemed not to be lessened by their earjier experience.
Well, the party was composed of Messrs. M. L,. Jackson, Wm. J.
Smith, W. R. Tilton, C. F.'Osgood, Samuel Anderson, J. A. Waas,
eorge Elvins, and Wm. L. Black,—Directors of The Peoples Ban
who had^lantiecTtlieliveFtrip as their annual outing. The arrangements were made by Mr. Black, and the surprise was carried out as a
Dractical joke on his colleagues.

Mrs. D. pleased especially in her
recitations and'monologues.
Tuesday afternoon, Dr. H. C.
Ferguson spoke :on -" Lights and
Shadows," which delighted allwho
braved the heated temperature.
Dr. Raguel's illustrated talk on
Belgium was one which everyone
should have heard. He had speni
many months there, and studied
his 'subject,- and -the description
was worthy of a Sunday evening
union meeting in one of the town
churches. Unfortunately, a severe
storm kept many away.
The Bern a Concert Party gave
excellent selections at each session
and earned several encores.
The Wednesday lecturer, Hon
A. L.TIBlair, was filled with his
topic, Some Great Current Problems," and from start to finish
kept, .his hearers busy a-tbinking
and all went away glad that they
had heard him, for they had been
interested-arid benefitted. In the
evening he spoke on "The P^cess,
and what does it Represent ?" It
was clear to our reporter that he
had ran the gauntlet, from JUevi
to Editor, so familiar was he with
the sorrows and joys, temptations
and trials, the ways of getting and
manufacturing news. He denounced yellow journalism, and advised
_alj_tp withhohjL suppori_from_such_
as print trash and lies. The great
good done by the Press", and the
near-future possibilities of great
city dailies was very graphically
brought out.
The Suwanee Quartette rendered
excellent selections,— comic., and
old plantation melodies-,—delighting those who love good music
Their voices were good, blended
nicely, and the fact that every song
brought an encore is proof thai
theiuvork was.appreciated.
.Pledge cards were signed, and
there is a possibility that they will
return next season.
Miss Elizabeth Myrick started
yesterday for Massachusetts, where
she will attend her brother Lockwood's graduation exercises, at
Harvard University. The mother
already there, where a visit of
three weeks will be made.
' .The High School Commencement, last Friday evening, attracted a
'till bouse, as usual. The exercises were a novelty,—an exhibition of
he actual class work in the several departments. Each section proved
uteresting, but the combination occupied too much time (which no one
could foresee), and it was past midnight when the curtain came down,
fhe idea wan a good one, and can be so modified as to please us all.
Miss Anna L. Holland, who is
t was a fine class, and we congratulate faculty and pupils upon what
training for Christian work in the
hey have accomplished.

The tramp question is getting to be one which is bothering people
ti this vicinity.
Not only are they a nuisance to housewives,, but are
uspectecl of k n o w i n g something about the cause of the many fires, both
.welling and forest.
Yesterday morning we counted them by the
ozen, off the main street, some on foot, others snoozing on doorsteps
until the lady of the house had breakfast under way. Oh, for a stone
ile I Or we might put them at work tearing up Uellevuc Avenue.
