continuestobeoneofthemostimportantaspectsofAustralianpork
production.Theindustryhasquicklyrespondedtogrowingconsumerdemand
fortopqualityproducethatissafetoeat.TheAustralianPorkIndustryQuality
AssuranceProgram(APIQ3®)isanon-farmqualityassuranceprogramthat
allowsproducerstodemonstrategoodfarmingpracticeusingtheprinciples
ofHazardAnalysisandmanagingCriticalControlPointsformanagement,
foodsafety,animalwelfare,biosecurityandtraceability.Rapiduptakeof
APIQ3®byproducersthroughoutAustraliahasreached86%ofthenational
herd,andisincreasing.
Allpigsgrownforpigmeatarehousedindifferentsizedgroupsdependingon
theirageandweight.
Australia’sporkindustryisalsoleadingtheworldtoensureitsporkproducts
arefullytracedfrompaddocktoplate.Thishasbeenrealisedthrough
traceabilitysystems(PigPassNationalVendorDeclaration—NVD).ThePigPass
NVDprovideskeyinformationthatcanbeusedtotracepigsorporkbackto
thepropertyoforiginintheeventofanemergency,suchasananimaldisease
outbreakorafoodsafetyincident.

GHGemissionsproducedbytheporkindustryaresignificantlylowerthan
otheragriculturalsectors,suchasbeefcattle,dairycattleandsheep.Currently,
theindustry'semissionsandpotentialmitigationoptionsputsusinthe
positiontohavealow,ifnotthelowest,globalwarmingpotentialforpork
productionworldwide.Butwe,asanindustry,arestrivingtoreducethiseven
furtherbysettinganindustrygoalof1kg CO2 equ per kg of pork produced.
Fortunately,mostoftheindustry’sGHGrelatetoemissionsfromeffluent
ponds.Thisprovidesuswithafantasticopportunityforemissionscapture,
destructionoruse.Progressiveindustryresearchisdevelopinginnovativenew
technologiesandmanagementsystemstomitigateandutilisetheseGHG
emissions.Currentresearchshowsthata500-sowpiggeryhasthepotential
toproduceenoughenergytopower3.1million100wattglobesforonehour,
orproduceelectricitytorun62housesforoneyear.Andifcombustedand
destroyed,itwouldeliminatetheequivalentofthefossilfuelGHGemissions
from458ToyotaCorollastravelling20,000km/peryearburning7L/100km.
AswellasGHGemissions,theindustryisalsoproactivelyaddressingmany
otherenvironmentalissues,suchasnutrientmanagement,by-productreuse,
alternativewastemanagementandsoilhealth.
TherearethreemaintypesofpigfarmingmethodsusedinAustralia—indoor
housing,deeplitterhousingandoutdoorbred/freerangesystems.
Indoor housing systemsareforpigsfrombirthtoweaningandfor
lactatingandweanedsows.Thissystemallowspigsofsimilaragestobekept
together.Grouppensandindividualpensareoftenusedindoors.
Outdoor bred/free range systemsconsistofoutdoorpaddocks,
includingrootingareas,wallowsandshelterhuts.Theweaners,growerpigs
andsowshaveaccesstopaddocksatalltimesthroughouttheirlives.

Australianpigproducershavethesameconcernsyoudowhenitcomesto
takingcareoftheirpigs.Todemonstratethattheyarelisteningtoconsumer
sentiment,inNovember2010theindustryannouncedthevoluntary
phase-outofsowstallsby2017.Australia’sporkfarmersarethefirstinthe
worldtomakesuchavoluntarycommitment.
Producersunderstandmorethananyonethatprovidingexcellentcareresults
inacontentedanimalthatprovidesahighqualityproduct—pigproducers’
livelihoodsdependonit.Theindustryinvestsmillionsofdollarseachyearto
researchnewtechnologiesandpracticestoimprovepigwelfare,andprovide
valuableeducationandtrainingtostockpeoplethroughoutAustralia.
TheModel Code of Practice for Welfare of Animals (Pigs)—(theModel
Code)—isaguidethathasbeendevelopedinconsultationwithalllevelsof
industry,regulators,RSCPAandscientiststodetailtheacceptablepractice
forthemanagementofpigs.Itoutlinesallresponsibilitiesinvolvedincaring
forpigs—includingtheirhousing,food,waterandspecialneeds.Standardsin
theModelCodehavebeenincorporatedintoAPIQ®andareindependently
auditedeachyeartoensureproducerscomply.

aresoldas‘baconers’/’finishers’.

hoop–likestructureswithdeeplitterflooring(ricehulls,straw,sawdust).These
systemsareusedextensivelyforgrowingpigsandforgrouphousingofdry
sows.
TheAustralianporkindustryisseriousaboutenvironmentalstewardship.
TheindustrybelievesithasadutytoensurethatAustralianporkisproduced
anddistributedresponsibly,whilealsoremainingcompetitiveandsustainable.
TheAustralianporkindustryhastakenproactivestepstohelpensureits
producerscarefullymanagethenation’spreciousenvironmentandresources.
Ineffortstoreducetheindustry'senvironmentalfootprint,ongoingindustry
researchanddevelopmentisfocusedonthecontinuousimprovementof
overallproductivity,wasteminimisation,pollutionpreventionandbeneficial
reuseofwastes.
Environmentalissuesposebothachallengeandopportunityforthe
Australianporkindustry.Theindustryhastackledthischallengehead—on
andismakingimportantprogressinaddressingtheseissues—especially
inacknowledgingandaddressinggreenhousegas(GHG)emissions.The
industryhasbecomethefirstinAustraliatohavedevelopedandapproveda
methodologyforthegovernment’sCarbonFarmingInitiative(CFI).
Asowraisedforbreedingwillhaveherfirstlitterwhenshe’sabout
one-year-old.Thegestationperiod(thetimefromconceptiontobirth)fora
sowisbetween15and17weeks.Shecanhaveuptotwolitterseachyear
andusuallyhasbetween9–10pigletsweanedperlitter.Thepigletsfeedfrom
theirmotherforthreetofourweeksbeforebeingweanedandgroupedwith
otherpigsthesameageinaweanerorgrowerfacility.
Gestation stalls:InNovember2010,theindustryoverwhelminglyagreed
thatAustraliawouldbethefirstnationintheworldtovoluntarilyphase-out
theuseofsowstallsby2017.Thismeanssowsandgiltsmustbekeptin
loosehousingfromfivedaysaftermatinguntiloneweekbeforefarrowing.
Thereasonproducershaveusedsowstallsinthepastisbecausepigscanbe
extremelyaggressiveanimals,especiallyduringtheearlystageofpregnancy.
Thebestandsafestwaytoensuresowsgetenoughfoodandaren’tbullied,
bittenandinjuredhasbeentoprotecttheminindividualstalls.Australian
