Body Mass Index (BMI) is used as a screening tool to indicate whether a person is underweight, overweight, obese or a healthy weight for their height. If your BMI is out of the healthy BMI range, your health risks may increase significantly. Extra weight makes you more likely to have high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol. These conditions make heart disease or stroke more likely. How to calculate your BMI To calculate your BMI you need to know your weight in kilograms (kg) and you height in meters (m). There are many BMI calculators available on the internet and on mobile apps that can help you calculate your BMI but if you don’t have either of these available here is a simple formula: BMI = weight in kgs (height in meters)2 Know your health numbers Below are some ‘healthy’ numbers to aim for. What does your BMI score mean? BMI Waist Size 18.5-24.9 Men: < 100cm Women: < 89 cm Blood Pressure 130/85 to 139/89 Blood Sugar 6-8 mmol/L < 5.0 mmol/L Cholesterol Below 18.5 18.5-24.9 25.0-29.9 30.0 and above Underweight Healthy Overweight Obese A BMI of over 25 indicates that you are overweight and your health may be at risk if you do not lose weight. Box 1462, Durban, 4000 Take some steps today towards a healthy weight • Cut out all processed foods and start focusing on quality whole foods. • Eat lots of fresh fruit and vegetables. • Eat more fish – including a portion of oily fish. • Cut down on saturated fat and sugar. • Drink water instead of sugar-sweetened beverages and fruit juices. • Eat less salt – no more than 6g a day for adults. • Start exercising… find something that you enjoy and can stick to. TopMed’s self-service options on the Website and the Mobile App provide you with 24 hour access to your personal medical scheme information. Below is a stepby-step guide on how to update your personal details, order a new membership card and download a copy of your tax or membership certificate. The first step is to login: •If you are on the internet go to www.topmed.co.za and click on LOGIN on the main menu. Enter your username and password and click SIGN IN. •If you are on the mobile app enter your username and password and LOGIN. Once you have logged in you can follow these easy steps: UPDATE YOUR PROFILE ON THE WEBSITE UPDATE YOUR CONTACT INFORMATION Update your contact information online and stay up to date with communication regarding your membership. • On the member home page you will view your personal details under PROFILE • If your information is incorrect click on UPDATE CONTACT DETAILS • Edit the information and click on APPLY CHANGES UPDATE YOUR PROFILE ON THE MOBILE APP • Click on SELF SERVICE • Click EDIT CONTACT DETAILS • Edit the information and click on SAVE REQUEST A NEW CARD ON THE WEBSITE REQUEST A NEW MEMBERSHIP CARD With just a click of a button you can request a new membership card that will be sent to the address on your profile. • Click QUERIES on the main menu • Click on LOG A NEW QUERY and under category select NEW CARD • Enter details of your request and SUBMIT REQUEST A NEW CARD ON THE MOBILE APP • Click on SELF SERVICE • Click REQUEST A NEW CARD • You will be asked if you would like to continue - click on YES REQUEST FOR DOCUMENTS ON THE WEBSITE REQUEST A TAX OR MEMBERSHIP CERTIFICATE If you require a copy of your Membership Certificate or Tax Certificate simply select the document that you need, click OK and it will be emailed to you. • Click on CORRESPONDENCE • Enter a DATE and select document you require from TYPE • Click DOWNLOAD REQUEST FOR DOCUMENTS ON THE MOBILE APP • Click on SELF SERVICE • Click REQUEST A MEMBERSHIP CERTIFICATE or REQUEST A TAX CERTIFICATE • You will be asked if you would like to continue - click on YES
