Introducing Shaky Bridge Wines
Shaky Bridge Wines sources fruit from 6 uniquely distinct Alexandra Basin vineyards
Each block has its own micro-climate and terroir
Shaky Bridge Wines is one of Central Otago’s larger Estate wine producers, managing all
aspects of the growing and making process from pruning to picking and bottling
The Home Block vineyard was first planted in 1973 as an experimental plot with Pinot Noir,
Gewurztraminer, Riesling and Chardonnay planted in the late 1970s/early ‘80s
As such, we produce wine from some of the oldest vines in Central Otago
We manage over 60 acres of vineyards, with vine ages from 10-30 years old
Our focus to quality has garnered numerous awards and accolades over time
Our healthy and sustainable vineyard practices, winemaking style, strong branding and
ongoing commitment to excellence, captures the essence of the Alexandra Basin
Our diverse vineyard sites and range of vine age allows us to
create multi-layered wines of exceptional quality and intense interest
The historic ‘Shaky Bridge’ provides the inspiration for our branding.
Nestled in a natural amphitheater, the Shaky Bridge vineyard overlooks its namesake
under the ‘clock on the hill’. Built in the late 1870s, the Shaky Bridge spans the
Manuherikia River providing an iconic memory of Central Otago’s gold mining
heritage. As pioneering grape growers and winemakers in Central Otago,
the Shaky Bridge is a fitting brand icon for our wines
Creating Shaky Bridge
The Shaky Bridge brand was created in 2002 with a low volume, single Pinot Noir
The second vintage of Shaky Bridge in 2003 received international acclaim from
media, trade and consumers alike. This exceptional Pinot Noir quickly
acknowledged Shaky Bridge as a high quality, Central Otago wine producer
Aromatic varieties were added to the portfolio in 2006
A separate tier of higher volume, consumer friendly wines offered at a more
affordable price point has continued to strengthen brand awareness and integrity
The quality of Shaky Bridge wines continues to create strong market demand since
the initial release and multi-award winning 2003 Pinot Noir
Our brand personality is unpretentious, traditional, innovative and first and
foremost based on delivering exceptional quality within each brand tier of our
brand family
Our goal is to appeal to wine lovers who are looking to be ‘moved’ by a fantastic
sensory experience through wine
The objective is to make Shaky Bridge wines that move you
Winemaking Philosophy
let the land speak for itself ; we believe our wines are born in the vineyard
grow only cool climate aromatic varieties, incorporating clonal selections, that
are best suited to the Alexandra Sub-Region
Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, Riesling, Chardonnay
follow sustainable vineyard practices to enhance soil health, create a balanced
environment for our vines that produces high quality, physiologically balanced
fruit at harvest
our sustainable vineyard practices minimize the need for weed sprays or sulphur,
while utilising more natural fertilizers such as compost tea, kelp and molasses
mixtures to promote soil health
control yields to ensure concentration, ripeness and intensity
identify and separate parcels prior to blending to enhance layered textures
destem and lightly crush all varieties prior to cold soak
cold soak all varieties to add texture and layers of flavour to our wines

Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand (SWNZ) was established in 1995 as an industry
initiative directed through New Zealand Winegrowers. SWNZ was commercially introduced
in 1997 and adopted by growers from all the grape growing regions within New Zealand.
The introduction of winery standards in 2002 has been a significant development, which
further substantiates the industry commitment to sustainable production.
Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand was developed in order to:
Provide a 'best practice' model of environmental practices in the vineyard and
winery.
Guarantee better quality assurance from the vineyard through to the bottle.
SHAKY BRIDGE WINES

Central Otago is a beautiful yet rugged, arid
region of New Zealand.
Mountain fed rivers and lakes contrast the
naturally desert-like landscape.
Large schist stone outcrops cover the
surrounding mountains, with wild thyme
blanketing the foothills.
Despite the heat of the summer, every winter
we are reminded that growing wine in Central
Otago is not for the faint of heart!
CENTRAL OTAGO IS…
…New Zealand’s highest and only ‘continentally
influenced’ climatic vine growing region.
Alexandra’s mean sunshine hours are 2050 hours
per annum – the highest in NZ
We receive 900–1200 growing degree days per year
Alexandra has the lowest rainfall in New Zealand:
250 – 300mm per annum.
The Alexandra Basin is 100 meters above sea
level, however other growing regions in Central
Otago reach as high as 400 metres
The Vineyards
Shaky Bridge Wines sources fruit from some of the oldest vines in Central
Otago. The age and diversity of our vineyard sources gives us a variety of
flavour profiles to ensure exceptional quality wines of multiple
dimensions.
Home Block
10 ha
This vineyard surrounds the winery buildings and is split into small blocks, planted to
Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Riesling and Pinot Gris. The vines are mostly
spur pruned, and are planted in a east/west orientation in very sandy soils.
Shaky Bridge Vineyard
1ha
A smaller vineyard dedicated to Pinot Noir and located on rock soils adjacent to the
Shaky Bridge Café on the Southern side of the Manuherikia just across the Shaky
Bridge. We use select parcels from this unique, virtually frost free vineyard. The heat
from the surrounding rock walls keeps this small vineyard a bit warmer all year,
resulting in extremely ripe parcels of fruit.
Terrace Vineyard
12 ha
Situated on the western side of the Alexandra Basin and overlooking the Clutha River,
this block has an upper terrace planted solely to Pinot Noir with the lower terrace a
mix of Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris.

Pioneer Vineyard 20ha
Our largest source block located opposite the winery on Dunstan Rd. Separated into
four blocks and planted with Pinot Noir clones 5, 777, 115, 667, and 6, and also with
new Pinot Gris 40a and 7a. Gewürztraminer, is also planted here. Rows are oriented
east to west in gently undulating, deep, stony soils.
Airport
2 ha
This block is dedicated to Pinot Noir. Clones 115, 10/5 and 5 are planted in the rocky
soils that catch the summer breeze. The inter-rows are planted with grass to aid
biological control and to provide some vine competition for soil resources.
The Fan
1ha
A small block of Pinot Noir situated in a small pocket of very fertile alluvial soil,
elevated slightly above the Home Block. Pinot noir clones 115, 5, and 10/5 are planted
in an east to west aspect. The soils contain large chunks of rock that hold the heat
well. Vines are spur pruned with grassed inter-rows to aid biological control.
Long dry autumns with warm
days and cool nights provide
ideal ripening conditions to
maximize the flavor intensity,
color and structure of our wines…
Our flagship, Shaky Bridge Pinot Noir,
reflects the distinctive trademark
characteristics of exceptional
Central Otago wine, keeping true to
the sub-regional subtleties of Alexandra
