MUNRO WALK - BEN LAWERS
Saturday 23 July 2011
10:30 for 11.00 depart till 17.00 (approx)
Depart from Ben Lawers car park near Killin
Join IMS members, friends and family for our third guided Munro walk. Ben Lawers is a
prominent mountain overlooking Loch Tay, and at a height of 3984 feet provides superb
views. For Munro baggers the walk also includes the traverse of Beinn Ghlas.
The walk will start at 11.00 am at the Ben Lawers car park, which is on the north side of Loch Tay about seven
miles from Killin.
In order that we have some idea of numbers it would be helpful if you could let us know if you are planning to
take part in the walk (see booking arrangements overleaf). All members in Scotland as well as friends and
relatives are welcome to participate, and please feel free just to turn up on the day if you wish.
We also intend, for those walkers who are interested, to have a meal together after the walk in a local hotel. If
you would like to participate in this please indicate when you are booking.
Directions to starting point
From the south: Proceed to Callander (Perthshire) and continue north on the A84 road to Lochearnhead. Here
the road becomes the A85 which should be followed northwards for about 5 miles to the Lix Toll Garage. Turn
right immediately before the garage on to the A827 road and follow this to Killin. Continue on the main road
through Killin, and proceed for a further 5 miles as far as a left turn signposted “Bridge of Balgie”. Turn left here
and proceed uphill for about 2 miles to the Ben Lawers Visitor car park where the walk will start.
From the north: Either (a) from Fort William take the A82 road south to Crianlarich, and here take the A85
road to the Lix Toll Garage. Turn left immediately beyond the garage on to the A827. Directions thereafter as
for the southern approach. Or (b) from Inverness or Dalwhinnie take the A9 road south as far as Ballinluig and
here take the A827 road westward. Follow this through Aberfeldy and Kenmore until, about 28 miles from
Ballinluig, there is a turning to the right signposted “Bridge of Balgie”. Turn right here. Directions thereafter as
for southern approach.
NOTE: The former visitor centre at the car park is now closed and no facilities are available there other than
car parking. Nearest facilities are at Killin.
When arriving at the car park please introduce yourself to Arthur, who will be leading the walk. For those who
do not know him he will be driving a blue Volkswagen Passat registration number SY06 NCU.
Arthur Custance is an ICAEW member who was a partner with Armstrong Watson in Carlisle before
retiring from full-time practice and moving north to Kinlochleven. Arthur now has more time to pursue his
passion for walking. He has been a keen walker since he was a teenager, and has climbed all the Munros
and Corbetts in Scotland as well as all the Wainwright summits in the English Lake District.
