Things to See and Do in New Orleans
Spicy Creole cuisine, smokin' Cajun music, colorful Mississippi River legends and mystical voodoo folklore— these are the hallmarks
of the Big Easy, and WorldMark New Orleans is your home in this vibrant, fascinating city. Situated in the Garden District on St.
Charles Avenue and Jackson Street in the historic Avenue Plaza, your WorldMark resort offers you a perfectly placed base camp
from which to explore the many wonders of the Crescent City.
Begin with a Garden District tour. Ride the celebrated St. Charles Avenue streetcar; view the famed above-ground tombs of
Lafayette Cemetery #1; peek at the football great Archie Manning and the death site of Confederacy president Jefferson Davis as
you peruse the ornate architectural styles—such as Italianate and antebellum Greek revival—that give the city its distinctive look. New
Orleans is a popular convention town, and the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center—named after the first African-American mayor of
the city—lies due north along the riverfront. Across the way on Julia Street you'll find Mulate's, a legendary local eatery presenting
mouthwatering Cajun cuisine, live music, a rousing dance floor and the motto “Go Where You Want To Be.”
Keep heading north along the water to the Riverwalk Mall, a bustling threelevel collection of shops, food stalls and artisan booths.
Adjacent to the mall is Harrah's, a 100,000 square-foot casino gambler's paradise. Cross Canal Street—the downtown district's major
thoroughfare—to visit the Aquarium of the Americas, one of the best in the country with the largest collection of sharks and jellyfish,
as well as a rare albino alligator. Along the water you'll also find Woldenberg Riverfront Park, a stretch of green peppered with
bandstands, sculptures and park benches. At the Moon Walk walkway you won't be weightless, but you will have a superb view of the
river and perhaps even be surprised by ships that can pop up out of nowhere like ghosts.
You're now directly across from Jackson Square, so head “inland” to tour its centerpiece, St. Louis Cathedral, and have your portrait
sketched by one of the many artists who congregate here. This is the edge of the celebrated French Quarter, where you can spend
hours investigating just one block. Restaurants, jazz clubs, boutiques and psychic readers abound here; the best thing to do is to
zigzag your way through the district and take it all in. Some landmarks to keep an eye open for: Chef Paul Prudhomme's K-Paul's
Louisiana Kitchen on Chartres, expansive Pat O'Brien's Bar on St. Peter and Antoine's Restaurant on St. Louis, which has been
family operated for 163 years.
New Orleans' cuisine is characterized by delicacies such as gumbo, catfish, etouffée, crawfish, po' boy sandwiches and just
about anything that's been blackened. Two of the best signature foods are among the simplest: coffee and beignets. The coffee of
New Orleans contains chicory, which imparts a unique flavor and bitterness; beignets are square pillows of dough that have been
deep-fried to perfection and dusted with powdered sugar. You'll find them in many establishments, but look for the Café du
Monde—the Starbucks of New Orleans—for the best examples of both. You'll find two locations on Poydras Street and two on
Decatur. Located next to the convention center is Mardi Gras World, where most of the parade floats are made. Enjoy a tour of the
museum and some yummy samples of king cake. End your day with a quintessential New Orleans's experience with a haunted history,
ghost or Voodoo tour.
